My Top 10 Favorite Fiction Authors

Because Everyone Has A Favorite(Or A Few)

I love to read! I have read many, many books, written by many great, and not so great, authors. But I decided to put my love of books to the test of choosing only 10 favorite authors. It was hard, but I was able to compile a list. Of course, this is only the Fiction writers, the Nonfiction authors have their own lens(hint, hint). I hope that my brief reviews of their works and the person helps you to decide if you want to read them for yourself! If you have your own Top 10 to share, feel free to post them in the Comments section. The more the merrier! Enjoy!

10. J.R.R. Tolkien

His books may be incredibly long, but the stories are incredible. I love The Hobbit because it was fun, fascinating and intense. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was kind of hard for me to read since I was comparing it to the much shorter movies, but I still enjoyed them. The way he weaved his characters and plot together clearly made it an instant classic.

I love Tolkien himself because he was a good friend of C.S. Lewis and they both created incredible stories together. He is an encouragement to writers because he had to wait a long time to find someone to publish his books, and he proved the people who ignored him wrong by showing how the most intense books become classic novels and Oscar winning films.

9. L.M. Montgomery

Her books are all so much fun to read, and leave you with memories of characters to love long after you finish the last page. I love Anne from Anne of Green Gables, the character she is most famous for creating, but her other series Emily of New Moon is also one of my favorites.

Her books are some of my favorites because they inspired me to start my second novel, a novel that I love to work on and return to when feeling creative.

Her books are great books for anyone, men or woman, young or old, any nationality. Her characters are lovable and her plot fun and suspenseful.

8. Ayn Rand

She changed the world with words. Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are her two most famous works, and they gave a whole new perspective on Capitalism and Socialism for generations of people.

My parents made me read her books, not that I was too willing. But once I began to read them and realized what she was trying to say about greed, love and true evil, I as instantly hooked. I may not agree with all her ideas and morals, but she still resonates with me when I talk business and money with people.

I am not the only one who thinks she is good: In an article about what influences the top business people in America, almost all of them ranked Atlas Shrugged as one of the greatest influences on how they run their business and make money. I would have to agree with them, she has greatly influenced me in how I look at the world today, even when she wrote her works over 50 years ago.

7. C.S. Lewis

Who does not wish they could live in Narnia? The storyline, the characters and the spirituality of his stories stay in my mind long after I finish the story. His Chronicles of Narnia series may be aimed at children, but anyone can read them and still walk away with something important in their minds.

My other favorite book of his is The Screwtape Letters. I listened to this on audio book, and I loved it! The way he portrays devils and temptation does make one wake up and realize that devils are not just red guys poking us with pitchforks. They are constantly tempting and testing us, wanting to grab us out of God's arms, but we can get all the strength we need from God himself, who is always watching out for us.

6. Jane Austin

Her work Emma would have to be my favorite, as some people call me Emma because of my matchmaking habits. She may write extremely long works, but her characters are classics that everyone knows and who we can relate to. She makes a mockery of the upper class and love, and I laugh all through her books.

For a simple book on relationships and human affairs, I always turn to Miss Austin when I want to escape into some incredibly love stories.

5. Douglas Adams

Wow, when I want to escape the world and have some intense laughing sessions, I look no further than Douglas Adams.

His book are funny, witty, short and the most random stories I have ever read. I get laughing within the first few pages, and I keep laughing as I progress, wondering how Adams was able to come up with such randomness that pervades his stories.

Of course, his stories do have a main takeaway that we can all apply to our lives: DON'T PANIC! If you keep that in mind while you read, you can have even more fun as the story progresses and you see multiple reasons to panic around every turn.

4. William Paul Young

To read articles about Mr. Young's book The Shack, you would think that he was butchering the sacred cow of Christianity. Of course, he did. His views on God, relationships with Him and how to handle grief struck chords with me all over my body. I could hardly believe that someone could put onto paper the way I view my relationship with God and the way I view modern-day 'church'.

You can read many articles either praising or condemning The Shack, but you never fully understand it until you pick up the book and read it. That is what I did, and I love the book. It has a proper place on my bookshelf and will never be moved.

3. Agatha Christie

Mysteries are one of my favorite genres, and Agatha Christie delivers on all spectrums of it.

Most of her stories are pretty basic, nothing too incredible. But some of her stories such as And Then There Were None and Murder On The Orient Express leave you wide-eyed and reading as fast as you can, the murderer being what would seem to be the most impossible person.

Her books are masterpieces, things that can be reread for fun and pleasure. Just pick up one of her mysteries and start reading. You will either love her or hate her by the end of the story, something that I admire of a good author.

2. Christopher Paolini

His books are some of my favorite fantasies, but I love his story the most.

He was homeschooled, and wrote Eragon when he was 15. He decided to self-publish his book and went from school to school promoting his book. At one such event, a man who worked in publishing saw him and offered to show his book to a publisher. It was accepted and before anyone knew it, Eragon was a huge hit and a run-away bestseller. The series stayed on bestseller lists and showed what a teenager from Montana can create.

His story is one of the greatest inspirations for me when I write, and I love to reread parts of his books, enjoying his dragons and swords, magic and adventure that he weaves together perfectly.

1. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

He is my number one because of his ultimate character: Sherlock Holmes. If I could pick my favorite character, it would have to be Sherlock. Brilliant, flawed, proud and intense, all in one man. I can read his stories and enjoy them every time, having fun watching Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson banter and run around England solving crimes. Sherlock Holmes is the memorable, intense and entertaining character that I wish to emulate in my own characters, but I know I will never come close to Sherlock, which is something that I never want to change.

Interesting lens; I share quite a few of your favourites. Have you read C S Lewis' science fiction works? I seriously recommend them, starting with Out of the Silent Planet.
