How Do I Trade Pins at Walt Disney World?

What do you need to trade pins at Walt Disney World? Well, first you need to obtain a pin that you want to trade, then you need to find someone with a pin you want more than the one you already have.

Of course, this is something of a simplification of the whole world of Disney Pin Trading - which is an activity you can enjoy at any of the Disney parks around the world, not just Walt Disney World. Even if you don't want to trade, Disney pins are a lot of fun to collect, and make a great souvenir! So let's take a look inside the world of Disney Pin Trading!

So How Do I Get Started?

There are multiple pin stores and kiosks located in each park, as well as Downtown Disney and each of the resorts. Disney pin trading has been going on since Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration in 1999, and has been going strong ever since, expanding to the Disney parks worldwide, as well as the Disney cruise line.

So, you may be wondering, how do you get started on this endeavor? While it isn't necessary, the most practical thing to do is purchase a starter set at one of the pin kiosks. These come with a lanyard to display your pins and several fairly generic pins to begin trading. You can display your pins on your hat, jacket, shirt, or whatever else you may like - but the lanyard is the traditional pin trader accessory, and it's guaranteed you'll see plenty around the park on your visit.

They also sell packs of pins intended for trading, each containing a themed series of generic pins, such a princesses or Winnie-the-Pooh, that aren't as interesting or detailed as other pins, thereby making them cheaper and less exciting. Of course, if you happen to like one or two of these - keep em! Just keep in mind, you're going to want a few pins to trade, otherwise you might as well be buying your pins individually!

Pin Trading Etiquette

Now, of course, Disney Pin Trading is not a total free-for-all. There are accepted rules and bits of etiquette to keep in mind when you're trading pins back and forth! So what should you keep in mind when you're trading pins, whether they be with cast members or other guests?

- You may only trade 2 pins with any given cast member per day.

- When you trade with anyone (one pin at a time is most polite), make sure you put the pin back onto the pointy end of the pin before you hand it over to your trading partner.

- Do not touch another person's lanyard or pins - if you want to see something closer, just ask.

- A Disney cast member has to trade with you, with a few caveats. As stated above, only 2 pins per cast member, you must trade a Disney pin (no other lapel pins), you can't trade a pin to a cast member that they already have on their lanyard (say if they already have a Hades pin on their lanyard, you can't trade the same Hades pin to them for another pin).

- Obviously, guests you seek to trade with can refuse trades, and it's not considered good form to make a big deal if you are denied.

- It's typically considered polite to trade with other guests in areas designated for pin trading, usually near the main pin shop for the area you're in. It's not usually accepted to stop other guests in their tracks as they're trying to get around the park just to get a look at their pins.

Cast Member Pins

One of the benefits of trading with cast members is that you may find cast member or "Hidden mickey" pins. These pins are denoted by a small Hidden Mickey placed somewhere on the face of the pin.

What's so special about these pins? Well, I'm glad you asked. These pins, which change from year-to-year (though old pins are still available through trading - such is the nature of pin trading!), are given to lanyard-wearing cast members by management, and are not available for purchase anywhere in the parks. The only place you can get them is on cast member lanyards.

The themes of the these pins change, from Disney villains, to the old Magic Kingdom ride tickets, even (my personal favorite, since I like strange things that other people take for granted...) pins for each of the parking lot names at Walt Disney World! You never know just what you're going to find, and it's pretty exciting knowing that there are hidden gems out there.

My parents got into pin trading for awhile, they live in FL and have yearly passes to WDW. Some of the pins they had were really cute. Sounds like a fun hobby!

P.S. I can't get comments to post on profile pages, so a quick little note to thank you for visiting my Gifts for Bigfoot Enthusiasts page! Glad you enjoyed it! ;)

This is totally new for me, but I'll look for it the next time I am in the park. I was there the first year Disney World opened and at the time I was into stickers. Still have all the ones I bought (which was about every one I could find, lol) tucked away somewhere.

I had never heard of this Josh but I have to be honest, I think I would keep them, unless of course I had duplicates. I am not sure what the market is like when it comes to collecting them but I know what it is like with comics etc so I imagine it would be the same
