My Best Friend's Wedding Caricature

My best friend, Ying, requested a wedding caricature for her wedding invitation card last year (You can read more about it in the link below). After seeing my work, my husband (then boyfriend) was rather impressed.

"Hey, I want one too for our wedding!" he said.

So I did one... for us.
It's a wedding gift... from me, to my husband. =)

Here's a thumbnail sketch of the groom, my husband. He has a large chin and when he smiles, his eyes are almost invisible. However, the most prominent feature is the shape of his mouth. When the shape of his mouth is drawn correctly, you can immediately see good likeness in the caricature sketch.

From many reference pictures and my own knowledge of my own appearance, I gathered that my prominent features are my sharp chin and high cheekbones. This is my first attempt of self-caricature. I think I can see a little bit of likeness in there but somehow, the sketch looks dull and lacks humour?
Using other photo references, I tried to sketch, stretch and explore by drawing more thumbnails. Finally, I came out with something I was pleased with.

What should the groom and bride be doing in the caricature? Since this is an artwork, let's be outrageous and set imagination free! How about riding on a magic carpet? Sitting on a rainbow? Or maybe perform some gravity-defying stunts that you can never achieve in real life? <br /> <br /> But *duh*... I didn't really felt diligent enough to spend a lot of time researching and getting my anatomy right. So I came out with this idea of us holding a sparkler in the night and writing "I do" in the air...

Then I changed my mind. Due to the time constraint, I decided to go with something really, really simple. So no, we didn't get to perform all those fantastic stunts even in caricature. Haha!

Painting the Caricature

Digital painting - Photoshop + Wacom tablet

After the drawing is finalised, the painting began. For me, I painted the caricature digitally using Photoshop and Wacom tablet. After blocking-in the colours with a large round brush, the details were then added stroke by stroke with a finer brush.

I started painting my husband's face first, then I moved on to mine. You can see in this picture, that I have started to refine my right eye.
How to draw hands? Drawing and painting hands can very challenging to many artists. I must admit I really spent a lot of time trying to get the hands right. I am quite happy with how it turned out in the end.

Tah-dah~ It's finally done!

I think I spent more than 50 hours on this caricature... Waaay~ too much time for a simple caricature like this. But I'm glad my husband loves it and set it as wallpaper on his Mac.

However, this is what most of my friends commented upon seeing my caricature, "The groom is cute but why does the bride look so fat? You look much prettier in person!"

Whahaha... I take it as a compliment!

Personalised Wedding cards with caricatureWe printed our wedding caricature into postcards and used them as our wedding invitation cards. Although the idea isn't exactly new, personalised wedding cards with a funny drawing of the bride and groom are still relatively unique compared to the usual pre-printed wedding cards from printers that most couples use.

Our cards received many nice compliments...

"So cute! Very special. I would keep this forever! :)"

"Excellent design and choice of photo! Both of you are very creative."

... and made the bride very happy! =D
