nPower or noPower?
npower may refer to (a) a gas and electricity supply company in the UK, a subsidiary of RWE or (b) a network of nonprofit technology assistance providers in the USA. This specific page deals with the former option - the power company from the UK.
nPower is a electricity and natural gas supply company owned by RWE of Germany. nPower was originally part of National Power, one of the generating companies created from the break-up of the CEGB. In 2000 National Power went on to split into two separate companies; Innogy, which included the UK based operations such as the nPower supply business and International Power which included the international operations of National Power.
There then followed lots of chopping and changing with the nPower brand being applied to most all of the opperations. You can read more on that subject at the wikiepdia page from which this introduction is an edited copy.
nPower are based in Swindon, England.

What are people saying
My personal experence of nPower is that I have found that it is never worth trusting anything they say on the phone and equally trust or sign nothing if someone comes to the door. This will probably fend off most of the problems although there seems to be some suggestion that paying nPower by direct debit might not be the wisest plan ever.

Matt's story
In 2007 nPower sent me a bill for a property where I had never been able to get rid of the prepayment meter. I'd asked but they never got around to it. I wrote about my experience and the rudeness of some staff there. It all seemed settled until this year they tried to bill me again. So this year I will be sending a cease and desist letter to nPower and taking legal advice.
While that was happening I figured I would try to find out the opinion of other people on the subject of nPower. This lens is the result.

What has got people worked up?
"Energy regulator Ofgem has launched an investigation into Npower following allegations about the company's selling practices. Ofgem said it would investigate claims that Npower's door-to-door salespeople had been mis-selling energy contracts to customers." says Yahoo news
However that was not the first time nPower hit the front pages. In February 2007 nPower used the joint strength of masked security men and flimsy court orders to suppress investigations by the press into allegations that nPower were dumping power station ash into lakes rich in a number of protect species.
"Two solicitors and four black clad security guards working for Npower have served a high court injunction on a working press photographer covering the energy company's controversial activities at an Oxfordshire beauty spot." You can read more about that here.

Before I started this research I thought that nPower we quite dire. Now I have no respect or trust for them at all. I'd feel safer locked in a cage with a rabid dog to be quite honest with you. I'm changing companies and nothing they can do (aside from giving me a lot of cash) will even slow me down.
