Nail Fungus Infection

Nail Fungus is a far too commonly occurring nail disorder. To prove that, here are some of the statistics of the occurrence of fungal nail infection or onychomycosis:

Statistics of Nail Fungus Infection

1. One in every four adults has experienced or will experience fungal infection of the nails at least once by the time they hit age forty

2. Nearly 50 percent of people aged 60 and above are stricken with some type of nail fungus

3. Over 35 million people all over the world have some type of fungal infection of the nails

4. Up to 6 to 8 percent of all adults have fungal nail infection

5. According to one study of dermatological clinics in the United States, nearly half of all the patients coming to the doctors' clinics are nail fungus sufferers

Just the sheer number of people who are being tormented by this nail condition shows that onychomycosis is not something to be taken lightly. Fungal infection of the nails has been known to be very difficult to get rid of and it may take months or even years before the infection completely goes away. And sometimes, even if the fungal infection has already been treated, it may come back to re-infect the nails and the long and arduous treatment cycle has to start all over again.

The statistics stated above reveal that adults in their thirties and especially senior citizens are at the highest risk of getting nail fungus. However, there have been reported cases of nail fungus occurring among children and young adults. Suffice to say, nail fungus may strike just about anyone.

So how would you know if you are at risk of getting nail fungus? No matter what age you are, you may have some unknowingly bad habits that are highly conducive to a fungal infection of the nails.

If there is one thing that nail fungus loves, it is a warm, damp, and moist environment. If you are fond of wearing tight, closed footwear that are made of non-breathable fabric, then you are encouraging the growth of nail fungus. If you wear these types of shoes when walking, running, or doing any activity that makes your feet sweat, then you are almost guaranteeing a nail fungal infection!

Shower floors are another area where nail fungi love to call their breeding ground. The constantly warm and moist shower floor is teeming with fungi. Don't ever walk around in public shower rooms barefooted unless you want your very own fungi colony on your nails.

People with certain types of illnesses can be at higher risk for nail fungus. Some of these illnesses are athlete's foot, diabetes, and AIDS. Athlete's foot, if left untreated, can spread into the nails and also infect them. Diabetes and AIDS are two illnesses that lower a person's immune system.

Other things that put you at risk of getting nail fungus are an unbalanced diet, not getting enough exercise, and exposure to pollutants. All of these things contribute to a poorer immune system thus lowering your defenses against a fungal nail infection.
