Information About Nail Fungus, Toenail and Fingernail Fungus
Nail Fungus, also known as Onychomycosis is an infection of the finger or toenails by different types of fungi. Normally finger and toenails are very effective barriers against superficial infections, but one the fungus is inside, it works against us, making it difficult to treat this fungal infection.
It is estimated that 13% of the population suffer from nail fungus. Most often, nail fungus appears in the toenails. This is because socks and shoes keep the toenails dark, warm, and moist. This is a perfect place for the fungus to grow.
Symptoms
* Change in color - nails may look brownish, yellowish, or have little white patches. Some may even be brown or black.
* Nails may get flaky, brittle, and chipped.
* Bits of debris may collect under your nails.
* Your nails may have a foul odor.
* Toenails may get so thick that wearing shoes causes pain. There can be a change in the shape of the nail.
* Separation of the nail from the nail bed.
* Discomfort from the infection may make it hard to walk, work, or do other activities.
Treatments: There are basically three types of treatment available:
* Pharmaceutical Treatments
* Home Remedies
* Natural Remedies
Pharmaceutical Treatments
Many patients have asked if prescription medications are safe. The two most popular prescription medications are Sporanox capsules and Lamisil tablets. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory in May 2001 concerning Sporanox (itraconazole) capsules and Lamisil (terbinafine hydrochloride) tablets for the treatment of nail fungus. The FDA concluded that there is strong evidence of congestive heart failure and hepatic adverse events with the administration of these therapies. Hepatic toxicity includes liver failure and death. The whole treatment will take at least 6 months. Given the possible risks associated with both drugs, you need to look at better and safer alternatives.
Home Remedies
One of the biggest mistakes we see in nail fungus treatment is trying a home remedy for nail fungus. Many patients spend months trying treatments like vinegar, bleach, rubbing alcohol and even Listerine. Unfortunately except in rare cases, these home remedies don't work. And since you are wasting time trying them, your fungus can actually worsen.

# 5 Wear shoes with good support and a wide toe area. Don't wear pointed shoes that press your toes together.
# 6 Avoid walking barefoot in public areas, such as locker room.
# 7 Wash your feet regularly with soap and water.
# 8 Remember to dry your feet thoroughly after washing.
# 9 Toenails should be clipped straight across so that the nail does not extend beyond the tip of the toe.
# 10 Do not wear nail polish when you have nail fungus. Nail polish traps moisture in the nail, which will only help nail fungus to thrive.

# 12 Properly fitted shoes are essential; an astonishing number of people wear shoes that don't fit right, and cause serious foot problems. A shoe with a firm sole and soft upper is best for daily activities.
