Nail Fungus - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
by Juliet Cohen
Nail polish and plastic or acrylic nails can trap moisture and fungi. Fungi are microscopic organisms that don't need sunlight to survive. Some fungi have beneficial uses, while others cause illness and infection. Fungal infections are not commonly contagious nor do they spread easily between people. Sometimes trauma or damage to a nail predisposes to the development of onychomycosis. Nail fungal infection if one or more of your nails. Symptoms including is Yellow, green, brown or black in color, caused by debris building up under your nail ansd Flat or dull, having lost luster and shine. Distorted in shape and brittle, crumbly or ragged Nail fungus infections are caused by dermatophyte fungi (tinea unguium), yeasts such as Candida albicans, and non-dermatophyte molds. Nail Fungus risk factors that may increase the development of nail fungus include humidity, heat, trauma, diabetes mellitus, and underlying tinea pedis (athlete's foot). Nail fungus is more than a cosmetic problem. It can be painful and interfere with daily activities such as walking, playing sports, writing, typing, and other activities that require manipulating small objects or repetitive finger use. An international study conducted by dermatologists found that nail fungus had a significant impact on the quality of life of people with the disease. The main problems identified were embarrassment, functional problems at work, reduction in social activities, fears of spreading the disease to others, and pain.
The best treatment of course is prevention. Keep your nails clean and dry. Wear shoes and socks that provide good ventilation. Tight shoes that trap perspiration create a perfect environment for fungi to grow and multiply. Wearing open-toed shoes, or shoes that provide good ventilation with socks that wick moisture away from your feet will help keep your feet dry. Do not bite your nails or try to dig out ingrown toenails. Doing either of these things puts you at risk for an infection. One most effective treatments is called Leucatin, an all-natural solution that can eliminate fungal infection and prevent recurrence. To treat nail fungus an oral antifungal medication, such as Itraconazole (Sporanox) ,Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). These medications help a new nail grow free of infection, slowly replacing the infected portion of your nail. You typically take these medications for six to 12 weeks but won't see the end result of treatment until the nail grows back completely. In some cases, surgical treatment of nail fungus may be necessary. Temporary removal of part of an infected nail may reduce pain and allow topical antifungal agents to be applied directly to the underlying tissue.

Nail Biting Can Lead to Fungal Infections
by Janet Martin
New York dermatologists Drs. Herbert P. Goodheart of Mount Sinai Hospital and Hendrik Uyttendaele of Columbia University Medical Center said this bad habit should be avoided since the cuticle protects the nail and the skin from bacteria and other possible sources of infection. Once the fungus sets in, it can be difficult to remove and can eventually damage and disfigure your nails. Complications include pain when walking, typing, and writing.
"Nail-biting can cause your fingertips to be red and sore and your cuticles to bleed. Nail-biting also increases your risk for infections around your nail beds and in your mouth. Dental problems and infections of the gums can be caused by nail-biting. Long-term nail-biting can also interfere with normal nail growth and cause deformed nails," warned WebMD.
Nail biting or onychophagia is a common response to stress, excitement, boredom, or inactivity that affects people of all ages. It is seen in about 50 percent of kids between the ages of 10 and 18 and in 23 percent of young adults aged 18 to 22. By age 30, most people stop biting their nails but 10 percent of men continue this habit.
Children may bite their nails in response to problems at home or at school. Others do it when they quit smoking. Some bite their nails without realizing it when they're involved in other activities like reading, talking on the phone or watching television.
Famous nail biters include former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, singer Lisa Marie Presley, and English singer/songwriter Phil Collins. American writer and poet Dorothy Parker, known for her caustic wit and wisecracks, was also a nail biter as evidenced in her famous quote: "I'm never going to be famous. My name will never be writ large on the roster of Those Who Do Things. I don't do any thing. Not one single thing. I used to bite my nails, but I don't even do that any more."
To stop nail biting, here are some quick tips from Somasin AFS, the safe and natural way to stop stubborn fungal nail infections and restore your nails' healthy shine and luster:
* Keep your nails clean and trimmed. Get a regular manicure but choose a clean nail salon or bring your own instruments if possible. Better still, carry a nail clipper with you always. If your nails look good, you're less likely to ruin them.
* Keep your hands busy when you're on the phone or watching TV. Try doodling or hold on to the remote control. Squeezing on a stress ball, silly putty or clay can also draw your attention away from your nails.
* Chew on something else. Keep a pack of gum or mints handy to chew on when you feel the urge to bite your nails.
* Paint a bitter-tasting polish on your nails. The awful taste will remind you to stop every time you start to bite your nails.

Nail Fungus from Salons
by R. Drysdale
People pick up nail fungus from spas and other beauty and health establishments for a variety of reasons. Wherever there are hot tubs and saunas, or any other place that has continually high humidity, the conditions are good for the survival of fungal elements. When someone with a fungal infection uses the facility, fungal spores can be left behind - spores that are viable and capable of growing and infecting someone new. The skin and nails of the feet are at particular risk here, and those that walk barefoot on wet tile floors, pool decks, or other wet surfaces risk picking up a fungus. Nail fungus from salons is more often transmitted from contaminated tools and instruments. In this scenario the infection is more likely to be on the hands, as many people visit salons for manicure only.
Some fungi that grow in the environment are capable of causing nail fungus infections. They are found in soil and decaying organic material and invade the nails when hands and feet come in contact with them. Nail fungus from spas, however, is more likely to be a true dermatophyte, a fungus well adapted to taking nourishment from keratin, the protein found in nails. Once under the nail - nail fungus from salons may be introduced through the cuticle, at the edges of nails, under the tip, or even under artificial nails - spores are protected in a warm moist environment and they begin to grow. Infiltrating the nail and spreading out form the starting point, they gradually destroy the structure and create an ugly brown scaly nail.
To avoid getting nail fungus from salons, make certain that your manicurist is a licensed trained professional. Ask about sterilization procedures and standards, and satisfy yourself that the premises are clean and orderly. As an added precaution, it's a good idea to bring your own tools to ensure that you are not being exposed to anyone else's health problems. After your manicure, have any redness or soreness assessed by a medical professional. To avoid nail fungus from spas, again, take a look at the premises and ask about sanitation procedures. Always wear footwear whenever possible and never share personal items such as towels or clippers. If nail or skin conditions occur after a spa visit, have them seen to promptly.

Nail Fungus on Wikipedia
Onychomycosis means fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about a half of all nail abnormalities.
This condition may affect toe- or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common. The prevalence of onychomycosis is about 6-8% in the adult population. Onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes is also known as tinea unguium (tinea of the nails).
Nail Disease on Wikipedia
Nail diseases are distinct from diseases of the skin. Although nails are a skin appendage, they have their own signs and symptoms which may relate to other medical conditions. Nail conditions that show signs of infection or inflammation require medical assistance and cannot be treated at a beauty parlor. Deformity or disease of the nails may be referred to as onychosis.
