What is Your "Soap Opera" Name? Come On--It's a Game!

In Laura Lippman's novel In Big Trouble, I learned about a "name game" that would make a good conversation "icebreaker" at a party.

(By the way, I highly recommend the book!)

In chapter 24, Tess (main character) and Rick (a lawyer) are heading to the home of a retired San Antonio Detective whose name is Marty Diamond. A discussion takes place between Tess and Rick about the detective's name.

Thus I discovered the "Silly Name Games".

"He must have a good p*rno name," [Tess] remarked, just to be saying something.

You might discover a few cool nicknames in this mystery book!

In Big Trouble (Hardback Edition)"Our detective friend, Marty Diamond. A good porno name, but not a good soap opera name," (remarks Tess.)

"What?" (replies Rick)

"Don't you know how to get your porno name? You take your childhood pet['s name] and the name of the street where you lived as a child, and that's your 'nom de nedkkid.' I don't have a good one unless I cheat and take the cross street where I currently live. Then I'm Tweetie Shakespeare. What's yours?" (Tess asks Rick.)

"The porno names are problematic, (Tess goes on to explain.) "But the soap opera names always work. That's middle name plus current street. Then I'm Esther Bond. So boring. Sounds like an old lady who runs the dress shop and never gets in on one of the big plots."

"I'm... Midnight Zarzamora."

(said Rick the lawyer from Lippman's book)

"[Rick] scowled when Tess laughted (at his 'porn name'). "I think it's pretty."(she responded.)

Hmm. Is "Midnight" his pet's name or his middle name?" (Tess thought.)

What would your "p*rno name" be?

Name of your childhood pet + Name of the street you lived on as a child:

Mine would be "Dixie Hill." My childhood pet was a dog named Dixie. I lived on Perry Hill Rd. I cheated a little by leaving off the "Perry". But, it works.

My spouse's name would be "Sonny Boy Street." Or it could have been "Sonny Boy 37." He lived on 37th Street.

Kind of funny isn't it?

Mine would be "Lee Deerfield". Guess what? My spouse's name would be the same! We both have Lee as a middle name.

The name sounds like a banker in Pine Valley, don't you think?

The Names Game can be found in this mystery novel

This novel is one of the best in the Tess Monaghan mystery series by Ms. Lippman. I highly recommend this series, by the way. Better if read in the order written, however. Most of the older titles are in paperback. I bet there are a few kindle and nook versions, too.

I absolutely loved this book. I mean, it is by one of my favorite mystery authors and it is set in a place I have visited many times--San Antonio, TX!
Great story, familiar setting and in paperback! Gotta Love IT.
