Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew was introduced in 1930 with the publication of The Secret of the Old Clock, the first of 56 books that comprise what is generally termed "The Original Series" published by Grosset & Dunlap. The last book in this series was published in 1979.

Beginning in 1959 and continuing through 1975, the first 34 books in the series were rewritten and updated to remove potentially offensive stereotypes and outdated language. In some cases, the plots were altered considerably.

In 1991, Applewood Books re-released the first 21 books in the series with their original text and using the original cover art.

The Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries

The Nancy Drew mysteries (as well as The Hardy Boys mysteries) inspired a television series that ran on ABC from January 1977 through January 1979. Initially, each episode featured either Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys, but by the middle of the second season the shows were combined.

Nancy Drew was initially played by Pamela Sue Martin. Unhappy with the loss of her own show when the storylines were combined with The Hardy Boys, she left towards the end of second season. Janet Louise Johnson replaced her as Nancy Drew for several episodes.

Emma Roberts played Nancy Drew in movie released in 2007. The DVD is scheduled for a mid-March 2008 release.

The teen detective accompanies her father on a business trip to Los Angeles where she happens upon clues to a murder mystery involving a movie star. A sequel is planned for a summer 2008 release.

The Nancy Drew movie website has a lot of information about the film, including a trailer.

A paperback tie-in to the movie, The Movie Star Mystery, is a case file, packed with the clues, photos, and other artifacts that helped Nancy Drew figure out her first Hollywood mystery. There's also a novelization the movie, Nancy Drew, written in the style of the series books.

Two activity books, also related to the movie, have been published. Still Sleuthing is filled with crime-stopping activities, while Hollywood Head Scratchers has code-cracking activities.

Other movie related items: the Nancy Drew Soundtrack (music from the motion picture), an 11" by 17" Nancy Drew Poster, and a 27" by 40" Nancy Drew Poster (standard theater size).

A series of 4 theatrical movies were released in 1938 and 1939 starring Bonita Granville as the teen sleuth.

Nancy Drew - Detective (1938). Nancy and Ted Nickerson solve a kidnapping case of a wealthy old lady.

Nancy Drew ... Reporter (1939). Nancy investigates a poisoning death and sets out to prove the innocence of the heir to the victim's fortune.

Nancy Drew - Trouble Shooter (1939). When a close friend of the Drew family is accused of murder, Nancy helps her lawyer father expose the real killers.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (1939). Nancy helps two aging spinsters fulfill the byzantine provisions of their father's will, but the murder of their chauffeur complicates matters. (Note: This is the only movie based, however loosely, on one of the series books.)
