Nano Reef Corals

Nano reef aquariums are generally classified as anything 24 gallons or less. Since the ocean is so vast, and nano aquariums are so tiny, there are limits on what can be put on them. This page lists some of the best corals that thrive well in nano reefs and how to care for them.

Nano Mushroom Pack

Mushroom corals for nano aquariums

Mushroom corals are perfect for small nano reef aquariums. They're tough, hardy, easy to take care of, and all that while being beautiful. Mushroom corals don't demand much, and that makes them perfect for beginner aquarium owners and nano tanks.

Mushroom corals will thrive on very low-light conditions--as I said they are not demanding. They will do great on power compact lighting or multiple fluorescent lights, and don't require feeding. I personally have had mushrooms in my aquarium for a long time and they are doing wonderfully with a simple 96 watt power compact light. They've multiplied like crazy!

LiveAquaria sells a mushroom pack made just for nano reef aquariums. Each pack consists of a mix of different mushroom species, and is a set of seven different individual mushrooms attached to small rocks. Under good lighting and water conditions, these mushrooms will grow and multiply quickly!

Zoanthid Polyp Pack

Zoanthids for nano aquariums

Another excellent choice for nano reef aquariums and beginner aquarists is zoanthid polyps. Zoanthids are easy to maintain and take care of, although they demand more light and water movement than mushrooms do. They also need iodine and other trace elements to be added to the water for optimum health. They multiply easily, and will quickly spread across all the rocks in the aquarium.

Although zoanthids are very beautiful and easy to care for, they do have a characteristic that requires attention. Zoanthids will sting neighboring corals or polyps. Don't worry, their sting doesn't harm humans, but it can be a problem in places with not much square footage, so to speak, like a nano aquarium. They can still be great choices for nano reefs; they just need to be spaced out a bit from other corals, and kept trimmed so they don't grow too much.

The Zoanthid Nano Polyp Pack from LiveAquaria is a set of five different zoanthid corals perfect for nano tanks.

Nano Soft Coral Pack

Soft corals for nano reefs

Soft corals can be another great choice for nano reef aquariums, as they typically are hardy and suitable for the small spaces of nano aquariums. They generally also are not that light-demanding, and therefore can be kept with lower-powered lights than other corals can.

However, they are photosynthetic, meaning they get their food by converting light, so having a good amount of life will ensure they grow and thrive.

Each nano soft coral pack contains a mix of four different species from each of the following categories:

Mushroom Corals
Polyp Corals
Soft Corals

The corals selected from each category include corals such as lavender mushrooms, starburst polyps, toadstool mushroom corals, and kenya trees. They aren't limited to those four of course, and the full list of corals is available below:
