What is a Court Reporter?

For the most part, journalists aren't allowed in to court proceedings, or if they are, they are limited on what they can report afterwards. So what is a court reporter, and why are they necessary? If we already have journalists by the hundred, why does the legal system have to have its own?
First off let's clarify things. A court reporter is the person in the courtroom who creates a written record of the proceedings. They transcribe the goings on with a stenotype machine to create a legally binding record of what went on, what was said, and by whom. They aren't journalists, Naples court reporter are specially trained to make a completely accurate account of spoken words during judicial proceedings. They have the unique responsibility to record proceedings to create a public record of what went on.
Recording legal proceedings isn't all a Naples court reporter does. They can also provide closed-captioning for the hearing impaired, subtitles for television and provide copy for teleprompts. Their ability to transpose spoken words into text with speed and accuracy makes them uniquely suited for these roles, as well as their day-to-day legal one.

The court reporter uses a stenotype to transcribe speech. This machine is a very specialist piece of equipment that vaguely resembles a typewriter. It has a special keyboard that can represent words, sounds and phrases as they happen. The keys produce symbols that can be translated after the fact to make up the record. Older machines would produce the code which would have to be translated by hand. Now, modern stenotypes are computerized and will display the translated text on a screen.
New technology has produced what's known as the "voice mask." This is a mask the court reporter wears that has a microphone inside to record as they dictate what's going on in the courtroom. The mask also keeps the noise in so they don't disturb the proceedings. This latest innovation is seen as the future for court reporting. Text to speech software quickly transcribes to text and can work quicker than a stenographer can type. The fact that the mask also restricts sounds escaping from it is valuable in other operations such as the aforementioned teleprompts. Especially valuable in busy newsrooms during breaking news.

To be a good Naples court reporter, it makes sense that they need to be able to listen. Not just hear what's being said, but really listen. They have to be able to record tone of voice, inflection, emotion and the meaning of what's being said. Accurate spelling and punctuation are also important to keep a proper record of what went on. A misplaced period or comma can completely change the inflection or intention of a sentence.

Being a Naples court reporter can be a varied and interesting career for those who have the ability, as they operate in many environments. With our love of litigation, the legal side of the career is regarded as a growth industry, and one with a long future ahead of it.
