Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are actually a type of small whale, who've evolved a giant tooth that protrudes out in an amazing spiral horn, much like an elephant's tusks do. It is actually their upper left tooth (maybe one in five hundred males is double-tusked) and can be three quarters of their body length! It is mainly a secondary sexual characteristic, and plays a role in social hierarchies. It may also be used to detect temperature and other changes in the water. More rarely, narwhals may actually fight or use it to break up ice. They live in the Arctic, and are closely related to the Beluga whale.

According to Inuit legend, the narwhal horn is the transformed, knotted, hair of a woman who was dragged in after a narwhal she had harpooned, and turned into one herself. Their latin name comes from the Greek for "one-tooth one-horn" (and unicorn basically means 'one horn', so it can also be "one-toothed unicorn". The name of narwhal is actually based on the Old Norse word nár, meaning 'corpse', so "Corpse whale" - because of the drowned sailor appearance of the mottled grey body.

Prices on Zazzle are set by the artist and vary depending on the style of the tee, but a basic men's tee is usually around $20-25 (Value t-shirts can be as low as $12.95)

You can change the background colour, size and style easily, and you can even customise the designs if you wish!

Zazzle prints on American Apparel t-shirts, so the quality is very good - but the women's style runs very small.

If you really like a particular narwhal design, but don't want a t-shirt, most of the artists offer the same design on a dozen other products (e.g. buttons, hats, mugs...) but I didn't want to clutter up the page with them.

Zazzle shipping is in tiers, so it may be cheaper overall to get four t-shirts than one at a time, and nine may be better value than six. The only real way to find out the shipping is to add it to your cart and play with the numbers.
