Nasal Rinsing and Sinus Irrigation

Nasal rinsing or sinus irrigation is a simple, ancient technique used by many people instead of expensive medication treatments. A warm saltwater solution rinse of the nasal passages takes up hardly any time and pays off big in the long run, especially if you stay consistent with it. When we are exposed to environmental irritants, such as allergens (yuck), pollution (yuck), debris (more yuck), microbes (even more yuck) and smoke (the yuckiest of all in my opinion, especially cigarette smoke), the mucus membranes of our sinuses swell, leading to more mucus production. This causes thicker, stickier, clogged mucus flow; and decrease in nose hair function. Next comes congestion, infection and medication use. (Stagnating mucus is a primary cause of infection, hence a doctor's visit)

A nasal rinse cleanses out built up mucus aka "boogers" and debris before they can cause you big trouble. Some of the discomfort from the mucus drying up can be very uncomfortable. That is why it's so important not to "pick your nose" as you may puncture the very thin membrane with your finger nail or even with the dry, sharp "mucus"-"booger". And not to mention the humiliation of getting caught with your finger up your nose, not charming! There is a very simple maneuver that cleanses the particles, shrinks nasal membranes, increases the nose hair function, thins secretions and opens the tiny sinus openings.

Here is the technique I use. You will need a syringe for this as well as some salt and warm water.

To rinse your sinuses, bend forward over the sink with the loaded syringe in your hand, filled with the saltwater solution. Tilt your head to the left and insert the tip into the right nostril, sealing it. Give it a gentle squeeze releasing some of the liquid. Breathe smoothly through your mouth. The water should flow gently into the right nostril, out of the left nostril and into the sink. Experiment with the tilt of your head to avoid having the water spill all over you! AND, don't fret as you will get much better at this with practice. Gently blow your nose when you're finished. The benefit of the salt is that it reduces swelling and the gentle blast of warm water works like a hose rinsing off the dried up particles aka "boogers". One thing to keep in mind when blowing your nose is to only blow one nostril at a time. This reduces the risk of getting a nosebleed or of blowing too hard and blocking your ears. This has happened to me in the past, not a pleasant experience having to unblock the ears after efficiently unblocking the nose.

The results you can expect are: reduced allergy misery, decreased congestion, healthier sinuses and less money spent on drugs.

It may not be fun or always pleasant, but nasal rinsing opens up the sinus cavity. Safe and natural, nasal rinsing often does what sinus surgery, antibiotics, decongestants and antihistamines don't.

$$Save$$ yourself time and $$money$$ and do your own nasal rinsing and sinus irrigation at home.
