NASCAR DIECAST CARS

NASCAR diecast cars have been a unique and important part of this sport for many years and a true collectible that fans treasure. I have collected thousands of these cars, starting in the early 1990's to about 2005 when I just did not have anymore room in my house, or my storage room. In this lens I will try and direct you to some of the best prices, and places that you can get your favorite Diecast, as well as to some of the history of Diecast Cars

These prices are like anything else, day to day, so pick and choose as soon as you see a deal on your favorite driver!

NASCAR Diecast Cars were first produced in the early-1990s by Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and Racing Champions. They were a crowd favorite at racetracks with their repective vendors. They were produced in 1/87, 1/64, 1/43, 1/24, and 1/18 scale.

Lionel has plans to offer fans and collectors die-cast models representing all of the teams and more than 30 NASCAR national series drivers included in the Licensing Trust for 2012. The joint venture will take over the category from Motorsports Authentics, a Concord, N.C.-based company that will instead focus on its core competency of trackside retail and be the exclusive die-cast car retailer at NASCAR tracks around the country.

Stay Focused!

Things to know about that special Diecast Car

Whether you're starting, or building your NASCAR diecast car collection, you'll want to stay focused on your favorites, learn the lingo to help you evaluate cars, research the value of the cars, and maintain your cars for the future. I made the mistake of buying anything that I thought would go up later, be cautious here, like anything else this market will have big drops in value, and the last thing you want to do is have a whole cellar full of useless crap. Stick to the big players, Dale Jr, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, and so on.

But... Wait, There's more. I once bought some diecast of a driver, who early on when he first started, was at the time having a medicore time of it in the Busch Grand National Series, (now called the Nationwide Series) nodody was following him early on, but his father was a "BIG DEAL in NASCAR", so I took a hunch, and now some of these early pieces, are some of my most valued cars, his name, Dale Earnhardt Jr, right now tops on the diecast list!

When first building out your collection, it's a good idea to pick a focus. Choose a favorite driver, scale, or sponsor. If you're a fan of Jeff Gordon, try to find his car in different scales. If you like the design of GM Goodwrench cars, try to collect all the different cars and drivers that they sponsor. Promotional or collector cars can also provide an interesting focus, since they cover a wide variety of interests.

What you need to know!

NASCAR diecast cars have their own unique terms, which can help you determine additional information about the cars.

SCALE:
Let's start off first explaining scale or the size of the cars. This is the relative size of the diecast car in relation to the real car. The scale is a ratio.

· 1/64 scale is one of the smallest replicas. They measure about 3"long. Commonly referred to as "Matchbox" or "Hot Wheels", and "Racing Champions" .This is where I started, some of these cars are now going for BIG $$$!

· 1/43 scale is not very common, mostly made as toys. These measures about 4" long. "Racing Champions" Mostly.

· 1/32 scale are slightly more popular and measure about 6" long. I have very few of these.

· 1/24 scale is the most common scale collected. These measure about 8" long. "Action, Brookfield, RCCA, Revell, Team Caliber, Winner's Circle", and so on. This to me is the best size.

· 1/18 scale, due to their 11" size, only a few people collect these cars and very few are made. For the most part, "Action, and Racing Champions". These are very hard to store, and I tend to stay away from these.

MFG:
Stands for Manufacturer. "Action", "Brookfield", "RCCA", "Revell", "Team Caliber", "Winner's Circle", "Matchbox", and "Hot Wheels" all manufacturered NASCAR merchandise, at one time or another.

H/O: Hood Open. The model has a hood that can open.

B/W: Black Window. The interior cannot be seen.

C/W: Clear Window. The interior of the car can be seen. Most cars are C/W unless obviously stated that they are B/W. Clear Window cars are the best ones to get.

Banks: Detail is the same as the standard car with lower production quantities. Banks came in two styles from Action. The first style was a BWB. They then added the CWB. With both BWB and CWB's, the coin slot is located in the rear window. A "key" is attached underneath the car to open the coin door. Most collectors do not actually use these as "banks." These banks were very popular for some time in the early days of collecting NASCAR diecast. The trend has moved towards CWC's. Not every driver or paint scheme is or was available in Bank form. This was what I focused on later on, some of the production numbers were under 100 pieces! Trust me no collector used these as banks.

Top 10 Nascar Diecast Cars for 2011

The Heavy Hitters of 2011

Jeff Gordon's No. 24 AARP/Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet and Kevin Harvick's No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet were the best-selling 1:24 scale die-cast cars of 2011, according to a top 10 list released today by Lionel NASCAR Collectables.

However in a surprise showing, Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne clinched the third sport as his No. 21 Motorcraft Daytona 500 Win Ford made the cut.

"The interesting thing about our top 10 list is that it proves how much NASCAR fans love a good story," said Howard Hitchcock, Vice President of Lionel NASCAR Collectables.
"Trevor Bayne driving the Wood Brothers to Victory Lane at the Daytona 500 is one of the most compelling stories in the history of the sport," he continued. "And while we realized Trevor's win was beyond big, our team had little idea just how popular the die-cast would be."
While Gordon's AARP Chevy was the best-selling die-cast car, Dale Earnhardt Jr. tops the list as the driver garnering the most die-cast sales in 2011. Earnhardt cars claimed spots four, seven and nine.

"There's no denying that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is still the sport's most popular driver from a merchandise perspective," Hitchcock said. "Our sales clearly reflect that and there is consistently strong demand for any Dale Jr. car."

Another Earnhardt also made the list of heavy hitters. Dale Earnhardt's No. 96 Cardinal Tractor Ford was introduced in July as the first release in the company's NASCAR Classics line - a series of historical die-cast which have never before been made. The result? Collectors loved the No. 96 car so much; it shot to the sixth spot on the list of 2011 best-sellers.

Lionel's top-10 diecasts for 2011, measured by sales:

1.Jeff Gordon No. 24 AARP/Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet

2. Kevin Harvick No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet

3.Trevor Bayne No. 21 Motorcraft Daytona Win Ford

4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. No. 88 Amp Energy Chevrolet

5.Tony Stewart No. 14 Mobil 1 Chevrolet

6. Dale Earnhardt No. 96 Cardinal Tractor Ford

7. Dale Earnhardt Jr. No. 88 National Guard Heritage Chevrolet

8.Tony Stewart No. 14 Office Depot Chevrolet

Is there Value in NASCAR Diecast Cars?

YOU BET!!

Some of these earlier and low production numbers can go up to $500 and MORE! Not bad considering you only paid maybe $45 bucks for it 10 years ago.

Keeping up on the price of NASCAR collectibles is essential to being an informed collector. eBay is a great place to see what items are selling for and how hot demand is for certain items. If you find a piece that seems too good to be true, investigate and ask the seller questions.

So how much are these diecast cars really worth?

Maybe you are an avid collector and you want to know how much your collection has appreciated in value. Maybe you have a few diecast cars that you are wanting to sell and you need to know the price you should ask for. Or, maybe you are wanting to buy a diecast car and want to know if you are getting a good deal.

Well the answer is not as simple as you are hoping for. NASCAR diecast cars are collectible items. Like any collectible they only have value to someone who wants them. A $100 dollar bill is worth the same amount to everyone but an Elite Dale Earnhardt Goodwrench Crash Car would have little or no value to someone who was not a fan or collector. But to someone else it could be near priceless.

There are, however, some basic factors which affect how much a diecast car is worth on average. First is the manufacturer. All manufacturers are not created equal. The diecast cars you can pick up at your local mega-mart have significantly lower quality and value than those produced by top of the line companies.

Availability also affects value. If the market is flooded with a certain type of diecast car the value will be much lower. Also, all NASCAR diecast cars are produced in limited quantities. Once these are all bought and in individual collections they can be very difficult to get. For this reason diecast cars tend to appreciate over time, as they become less readily available in the market. Popular drivers and car sponsors are more highly sought after and can be more difficult to find.

NASCAR diecast cars can also gain temporary popularity, causing a market shortage, due to some specific driver activity, like accident, retirement, sponsor change or championship win. These types of things can artifcially elevate a cars price in the short term. Other factors like dealer bias or geographic area of the store also can influence the price of a diecast car. If your city only has one NASCAR diecast store, chances are the prices will be a little higher. Finally diecast car values fluctuate. Over time they generally increase but month to month they prices will rise and fall.

Price guides like Beckett Racing Collectibles will list values and often have articles and information about the state of the hobby in general. There is limited information, but if you look at enough websites on Diecast, you will have a pretty good idea, of the the best PRICE, as well as SERVICE. Many collectors, like myself have known a variety of "MOM and POP" diecast stores that we visit, and for the most part will match any "BIG STORE", so by all means check with them first!

Take care of your investments!

IMPORTANT!!

Protecting your collection is an important part of the hobby. Hard plastic and glass display cases for NASCAR diecast cars of all scales are available. Many cases are built for specific drivers and feature graphics that are complementary to their cars.

Keep your collection out of direct sunlight, which can damage the finish. Also avoid storing your collection somewhere with high temperature changes. These can warp or damage the finish, or the car itself. Highly humid locations should be avoided for the same reason, these cars will rust!

Most important, KEEP THE BOX!! I don't know how many shows I have been to, and I see that the dealer had a damaged, or no box for the car I wanted. This car is useless, and will be only a fraction of the price, as one in a box would go for later on,

If you have a large collection, ask your insurance agent about coverage for your collection, which may be affordable and can help you rebuild a collection if tragedy strikes. I found this out during a recent flood!

Every diecast collector needs to protect and display their collection/investment. Below you will find links to the web's top diecast display case dealers and manufacturers.
