Why NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway Is So Exciting And Filled With Passion

I just love Tennessee and NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway.

You probably know that NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway has often been called the "World's Fastest Half Mile". And believe me, they aren't kidding.

I can remember as if it was yesterday, the first time I heard the roaring of the engines and 160,000 screaming fans at NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway.

If you aren't totally pumped up by the end of the first lap, you're in the wrong place. But most of us are already excited even before the NASCAR Bristol race begins.

Am I right?

NASCAR Bristol Is The All-American Good Time

I want to share something personal with you.

Imagine this and see if you don't agree with me?

You feel like you are really part of something "special" at NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway, from the opening inspiring ceremony with the patriotic flyby of F-16's or F-18's, to the waving of the checkered flag.

I'll be the first to admit, that when I see a big American flag being held by a parachute jumper spiraling down over the NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway race track and the crowd singing our American national anthem-----I still get a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat.

Do you have these same feelings at NASCAR Bristol?

Wow, what beautiful memories we share.

NASCAR Bristol History Makes You Feel Proud

The American "Can Do" spirit is what built NASCAR Bristol.

Carl Moore, Larry Carrier and R.G. Pope had the vision to see more than just a piece of land that was a dairy farm. They had bigger dreams in mind.

After their proposal to build a race track at Piney Flats was rejected, they refused to let their NASCAR dreams be crushed by those who didn't share their passion.

The fact is, Carl, Larry and R.G. went just five miles down the road on Highway 11-E in Bristol.

And the rest as they say is history.

Their "Can Do" spirit is what created the enjoyment that is now our NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway.

Thanks Carl, R.G. and Larry. You done good, as we Southern boys like to say.

Do You Remember This About NASCAR Bristol?

With a seating capacity of just 18,000, the first NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway race took place on July 30, 1961.

But, a little known NASCAR Bristol fact is that the track also hosted weekly races before the first sanctioned NASCAR race that July in 1961.

During the qualifying trials on July 27, 1961, Tony Lund in his Pontiac was the first NASCAR Bristol driver on the track. David Person was the second driver on the track for this historic date.

The pole position was won by Fred Lorenzen at NASCAR Bristol with a winning speed of 79.225 MPH.

Boy, how times have changed.

Americans Enjoyed The First NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway Race In July 1961

Talk about a trip down memory lane! Check this out.

The crowd was loving every minute of it as country music singer Brenda Lee brought everyone to their feet as she sang the national anthem to open the first NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway race.

And would you believe, Brenda Lee was only 17 at the time.

That first race was "The Volunteer 500".

Jack Smith and his relief driver Johnny Allen won the race on that beautiful July afternoon. They shared the purse winnings of $3,225. By today's standards that seems like chump change.

As a matter of fact, the total purse for this inaugural race was only $16,625.

Some say those were the "good old days" of NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway.

But me, I say I love NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway just the way it is today.
