NASCAR Draft Track

Have you ever wondered how NASCAR makes those colorful effects around the cars? Well, I was curious too.

Here I'll share with you what I discovered.

Is NASCAR Draft Track For Real?

Is This Cool Or What?

When I first saw this effect on my TV while watching NASCAR on ESPN, I was totally blown away.

Not only am I a NASCAR fan, but I'm also fascinated by the TV coverage using NASCAR Draft Track.

NASCAR Draft Track tells you, the viewer, the story of how NASCAR drafting works.

You may be asking yourself, as I did, "How does NASCAR Draft Track Work"?

If I do my job, by the end of your visit to this site you will know how NASCAR Draft Track works.

So, let's get to it.

How NASCAR Draft Track Started

Discover This Amazing Draft Track Story

Were you lucky enough to be one of the first TV viewers to see NASCAR Draft Track when it appeared on the ESPN coverage in late July 2007 of the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard?

I'm sure you're like me and don't really want to know about the details of the NASCAR Draft Track software, algorithms or physics behind how it works. Besides, I can just barely spell "algorithm" never mind understand what that means.

So here's the simple version, OK?

Computer scientists at the University of Washington, being the smart dudes that they are, created a computer program to instantly see how the air flows around speeding cars.

All I know is that it looks great on TV.

I don't have to understand it.

You'll Love How This Works

There are always a few "geeks" out there reading my sites, so this section is for them only.

University of Washington associate Professor Zoran Popovic, along with two students, wrote the computer code for a fluid dynamics simulation in real time.

This program speeds up the fluid dynamics simulation to produce the NASCAR Draft Track effect we see on ESPN.

According to the Science Daily (August 10, 2007), "The new algorithm first simulates all the ways that smoke, fire -- or in this case, modified stock cars -- can behave.

Then it runs the simulation for a reduced number of physically possible parameters. This allows the model to run a million times faster than before. The researchers presented the work at the SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference in August 2006."

Whew, now let's get back to earth.

Watching NASCAR Draft Track For Me Is A Rush

So the next time you see the NASCAR Draft Track just remember that the Green, Blue, Yellow and Red mean different speeds and directions for the airflow.

The yellow shows where the greatest force is pushing down on the car giving it better traction, saving gas and being "pulled along" by the car in front.

Don't you agree that NASCAR Draft Track is great?
