How many men make up a NASCAR pit crew?

The casual NASCAR fan might not know that a NASCAR pit crew is made up of 7 members.

OK. So, you're one of the smart ones that knew the answer.

Many NASCAR fans might not be aware that being a member of a NASCAR pit crew is a difficult job.

Most of the team members are in great physical shape because they were former college or professional athletes.

The fact is, being a member of a NASCAR pit crew is very demanding and dangerous work.

It's very important that a NASCAR pit crew work as a team.

They just don't jump over the pit wall and "wing it". They spend many hours practicing exactly what they have to do in order to get their team car back on the track FAST.

Everyone in NASCAR knows, that a mere 100th of a second can mean the difference between winning the race and coming in 2nd.

Not only must each NASCAR pit crew member be physically strong, they must be very focused on their specific job.

The fact is, discipline is the glue that holds the entire NASCAR pit crew team together.

Imagine what it must feel like to be a NASCAR pit crew jackman.

Not only do you have to jack up the car, but you must also pull the right rear tire off after it has been loosened by the right rear tire changer. This helps to make for a quicker change of that tire.

You might say to yourself, big deal. The hydraulic jack lifts the car. All the jackman has to do is take off the rear right tire and get it out of the way so a new tire can be put on.

My question to you is:

Have you ever tried to lift one of those NASCAR tires?

Believe me. It's not an easy job, especially when every 100th of a second counts.

This is no job for a wimp.

This may sound easy, but it takes a lot of focus and discipline.

With every pit stop, this team member must concentrate only on changing the front tires with an air wrench---and in record time.

The rear tire changer has the added advantage of the jackman removing the right rear tire. Remember, they have to work together as a team!

Why?

Because every 100th of second counts.

The NASCAR pit crew rule is, be fast or be gone!

If you were a NASCAR pit crew gas man you would have two jobs.

First, to put gasoline in the car with a special gas can.

Second, if the car needs just a little or no fuel, then you as the gas man would help remove the old tires after the nuts have been loosened.

Do you think you could qualify to do this job?

As a gas catch man in a NASCAR race, your job would to catch any be fuel overflow.

Also, you would be responsible for holding a second gas can for the gas man, just in case it is needed.

This is a very important job because fuel must be keep off the track and pit row to prevent accidents and fires.

This guy really has to be quick and strong.

In what seems like only a few heartbeats, this team member must mount the new tires on the studs after bringing it over the pit wall.

This is no easy task I'm sure.

Not only does this team member have to bring the new tires over the pit wall, but also place the new tires on the studs.

And in a flash, he must also roll the old tires to the pit wall.

These seven NASCAR pit crew members have some of the toughest jobs in NASCAR.

Cleaning the windshield is allowed by an eighth man.

Don't kid yourself.

This is just as important as any other NASCAR pit crew member---for obvious reasons.
