Feel The Adrenalin Rush Of NASCAR At Talladega

When you think of NASCAR you have to think of Talladega.

Who in their wildest dreams would have thought back in the late 1960's that a patch of earth that could have been used for soybean farming would become famous.

Throw in a few abandoned airport runways nearby and presto-----NASCAR Talladega Superspeedway was born.

In September 1969, Alabama International Motor Speedway opened its gates to cheering fans looking to experience the thrill of NASCAR. And right from the very beginning, it was clear that this track would exceed expectations for size, competition and speed.

There is no question, that Talladega, Alabama was selected as a NASCAR site for very specific reasons. When you think about it, all these reasons make perfect sense.

In the Southeast United States, Talladega surfaced as the one of the best locations for NASCAR because it was close to the interstate system, the land was available and 20 million people lived within 300 miles. As it turned out, this site was absolutely perfect.

Imagine what NASCAR and Talladega would be today if Anniston insurance executive Bill Ward and International Speedway Corporation founder Bill France had not causally discussed the idea in the mid-1960's at Daytona.

Bill Ward's excitement for the idea was contagious.

After meeting with Talladega Mayor James Hardwick and other city officials, Bill Ward and Bill France finished their sales pitch in a unique way.

Knowing that it is emotion that sells just about everything, a trip was arranged to take the city officials to the Firecracker 400 in Daytona.

Once the Talladega city officials experienced the "adrenalin rush" of NASCAR racing for themselves at the Firecracker 400 in Daytona, the deal was done.

They saw for themselves that the positive economic impact of creating a NASCAR Speedway at Talladega was enormous. And the city officials knew that they must jump on this unusual opportunity.

But it was the power of Bill France's personality that made it all happen.

From arranging the financing to completing construction, Bill France was the man in charge. What an exciting day it must have been on May 23, 1968 as the roaring bulldozers began their exciting work on the 2000-acre site.

There was only one rule on September 13, 1969.

If you weren't absolutely excited about experiencing the thrill of a NASCAR race with speeds around 200 MPH, you were in the wrong place.

Only those who were willing to let themselves go and "feel" the adrenalin rush of a childhood adventure should be sitting in the stands.

That was the only rule that September day when the "Bama 400 Grand Touring Race" brought spectator emotions to a fever pitch.

Just writing about it now makes me feel like a kid again.
