When it comes to entertainment, Natalie Portman may always be best known as Queen Amidala in the Star Wars series of films, and it's very possible that that won't bother her. Portman began acting at the age of 12 after being discovered in a pizza parlor by an agent looking for a child model. Her first film, Leon, (aka The Professional) put her into a fairly sexualized position, however, and she avoided any similar roles until Closer, which gained her an Academy Award nomination.
Portman received (and lampooned) her undergraduate degree from Harvard University -- she once said "I'm going to college. I don't care if it ruined my career. I'd rather be smart than a movie star." -- studying psychology. She has said that the movies will have to take a back seat to that as a career, but lately that career has been heating up, with one offbeat choice after another. She recently said "I definitely think that maybe someday I'll be doing other things besides acting. But until I do them, I've learned not to talk about it. I've been interviewed since I was 12 years old and I feel as if I've left a trail of unfulfilled dreams behind me." What she has done is show her interest in world affairs and combating poverty by acting as an "Ambassador of Hope" for FINCA, an organization that works to provide financial opportunity to women in developing countries by promoting community banking.
