National Dance Like A Chicken Day

In 1963 he was entertaining people in a restaurant in Davos, Switzerland. Where he first played Der Ententanz (Duck Song).The restaurant-goers were instantly charmed and began to dance along with the music, mimicking the birds that had given the song its name.

By the time 1970 rolled around, the name of the song had changed and it was called Vogeltanz (The Bird Song), and had developed a set choreography. It was only known in the little town of switzland called Davos. Until a Belgian music publisher on vacation stopped by the restaurant at which Thomas played the tune.

Thanks to the music publisher, the popularity of Vogeltanz (The Bird Song) soon spread throughout Europe. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. publishing rights to the song were acquired by Stanley Mills of September Music Corp., who had a surprisingly hard time selling it.

Stanley Mills was set in his mind to introduce this song, Vogeltanz (The Bird Song),
to America. He promoted it every chance he got. He even talked a few bands to record the song on their albums. But the song never got any notice. What he didn't know was that the song was picking up popularity slowly through the music world. It was beginning to be played by different bands at Oktoberfests, weddings and other functions. Stanley Mills didn't realize how popular the song beome until the band at his son's bar mitzxah played it without knowing the connection to the song to the family.

By the mid 1990s, Mills was getting phone calls from record labels and advertising executives, asking to use the song that had come to be known as the Chicken Dance on their compilation CDs and in their commercials. It took almost two decades, but the Chicken Dance had finally arrived in the U.S.

The Chicken Dance is known by many different names, from the Birdie Song to The Song Of The Chicken. Some have even add a little lyrics to the song, with different meanings in different languages, rather having the same words in translation. No matter where you go in the world, however, the melody is still the same, which means you can do the Chicken Dance in one part of the world and just as easily as in your home town.
