Praying for Our Nation is a Privilege

Each year on the first Thursday in May many honor the National Day of Prayer. In 2013 the National Day of Prayer will be on May 2nd. Who of us watching the news these days can't see that we are a Nation that needs prayer? Would things be different in our Nation, our World, if we prayed more?

Let's take a look and see the history behind the National Day of Prayer, and why it was and is so important to turn our eyes and hearts towards God in prayer. You will also find links and information for the upcoming National Day of Prayer that are updated as month of May draws near.

Countdown to 2013 National Day of Prayer

2013 National Day of Prayer: May 2, 2013

What We Did for the National Day of Prayer in 2010, 2011 and 2012

And God willing, will do the same in 2013

In 2010 and 2011 I joined a wonderful group of people outside of our Town Hall at our Township's memorial for our local Veterans and those who have sacrificed there lives for our Nation during wars past and present, including those we lost on September 11, 2001 (9/11) at the World Trade Center and the Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania. It was a great turnout and people prayed with sincerity and passion.

The weather was rainy this year, 2012, so we met indoors at noon. Then in the evening, many gathered to pray for for our Town, County, State, Nation, it's leaders and those that work in the community. We don't always get to the evening National Day of Prayer event, but when we do, it's special! The last time we were there in the evening was in 2010.

...if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

History of the National Day of Prayer in Our Town

I started taking part when my children were young

When our Town began to formally observe the National Day of Prayer, there were times set aside during the day to pray at schools, at our Town Hall, and a special time of prayer and worship in the evening. My children were small at the time, but after school, I took them in my car to the locations mentioned to pray...in one case only a few gathered, in another there was no one, but we sat in the car and prayed together for the schools that my children were attending.

In later years, there was prayer around the flag pole early in the morning, and whenever possible, I was up early to drive my children to school and pray with others that gathered. The numbers increased significantly over the years, and the services were wonderful to be a part of.

There have been some changes as far as praying around the flag pole, I am a bit "out of the loop" on that as my children are grown, but each year at noon, people gather at our memorial in front of the Town Hall to pray..I plan to be there. In the evening, those who wish to attend are invited to gather at one of the churches in town to worship, sing, and pray. I plan to be there if I can.

It is a wonderful opportunity and privilege to still have the freedom in our Nation to gather and pray...in many places around the world you are put in prison or worse for doing such things...we are blessed and need to keep praying so that we do not lose those freedoms.

You can tell us what you will be doing in the next section.

Yes, this is what I'll be doing:

KayeSI says:

Yes - I enjoyed prayer time for our nation with the youngest of my grandchildren, as well as alone with God. Truly a blessing to pray for our nation and our world!

OhMe says:

Yes, I will be participating either at home or a scheduled event.

Tipi says:

I usually pray and meditate at home rather than attending an event.

Susan52 says:

I won't be able to attend an event because I'll be traveling that day, but I'll be praying nonethless. As you mentioned, human leaders disappoint us. I believe that God really wants to bless us, but we need to ask.

Heather426 says:

Pray and meditate,as I always do.

No, and here's why:

Presidential Proclamation - National Day of Prayer 2012

By President Obama in 2012 - Will be updated for 2013

Each year, the President makes a Proclamation confirming the date and importance of the National Day of Prayer in May.

In 2012, President Obama's proclamation began as follows:

"Prayer has always been a part of the American story, and today countless Americans rely on prayer for comfort, direction, and strength, praying not only for themselves, but for their communities, their country, and the world.

"On this National Day of Prayer, we give thanks for our democracy that respects the beliefs and protects the religious freedom of all people to pray, worship, or abstain according to the dictates of their conscience. Let us pray for all the citizens of our great Nation, particularly those who are sick, mourning, or without hope, and ask God for the sustenance to meet the challenges we face as a Nation. May we embrace the responsibility we have to each other, and rely on the better angels of our nature in service to one another. Let us be humble in our convictions, and courageous in our virtue. Let us pray for those who are suffering around the world, and let us be open to opportunities to ease that suffering.

"Let us also pay tribute to the men and women of our Armed Forces...." (continued at following link)

In 2010 there was a Rumor that Barack Obama Canceled the National Day of Prayer

It wasn't true, but something has changed since he became President

Prayer at Valley Forge Print

In 2010, the social networking sites and blogs were abuzz with information stating that President Obama had canceled the National Day of Prayer, I am on Facebook and was almost taken in by the rumor.

While that rumor was not true, it is still disappointing to many that President Obama, from 2009 on, broke with the practice of holding a White House ceremony on the occasion. But he has never done anything to indicate that he is moving toward ending the National Day of Prayer.
