What Do You Know About National Infertility Awareness Week?
Things To Know About Infertility
Some basic facts and statistics

Do you know the true facts about infertility? Chances are unless you've been affected by it yourself, you probably don't. Even if you are affected, you may feel alone, depressed, or some how at fault for your condition when you are absolutely not to blame. Here are some basic data and statistics about infertility that you should be aware of (taken from Discovery Health and elsewhere):
- 1In America alone, infertility affects over 6 million women and their partners - that's about 10 percent of the reproductive age population. One in six couples will encounter difficulty getting pregnant and experience infertility to some extent.
- 2Infertility is not always "the woman's fault" - indeed, infertility affects male and female reproductive systems nearly equally. In approximately 30% of all infertility cases, there are both male and female factors causing difficulty in achieving successful pregnancy.
- 3In approximately 30% of cases, the causes will remain "unexplained infertility" despite full medical work-ups and extensive diagnostic testing. This only points out the complicated nature and many causes of infertility, and how even today medical science cannot provide all of the answers.
- 4There is no such thing as a "miracle cure for infertility", despite thousands of websites and unscrupulous individuals promising such. The causes and reasons for infertility are far too numerous and different to all be "solved" by one single approach or drug product.
- 5Infertility is a disease. Albeit it took until 2009 for the World Health Organization to officially define infertility as a disease. This was an important milestone in recognizing the serious medical nature of infertility and helping to bring it more recognition and hopefully governmental and scientific support.
- 6Infertility is a disability. In 1998, the U.S. Supreme court held that infertility is a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, most insurers in the United States still provide no coverage - or only extremely limited coverage - for medical treatment related to infertility. Many of those affected with infertility have to struggle in the workplace not just to afford expensive IF treatments but to receive fair treatment and understanding if they must take time off for procedures, testing, or rest during a difficult pregnancy.

Let's Stop Ignoring Infertility!
How to get involved in the 2012 awareness campain
Every year, NIAW has a different theme for participants to focus on. For 2012, that theme is "Don't Ignore Infertility." Far too often, infertility is a disease that is ignored by healthcare professionals, the government, insurance companies and the media. It's time for those affected with infertility to speak up and educate family members, friends, elected officials and employers about how serious infertility truly is.It's also time for those coping with infertility to stop ignoring the disease themselves. Time to stop ignoring the symptoms of infertility and putting off seeing a specialist. Time to stop letting others belittle our pain and struggles. Time to stop being ignored at family gatherings and social functions because we are childless.
As part of this year's campaign, RESOLVE will be hosting a Bloggers Unite challenge. During the week of April 22-28, blog about the theme "Don't Ignore..." and your blog could be spotlighted and even win the year's Hope Award. Find out more on participating, and start planning your entries now!
RESOLVE also has other great ideas on hosting events to help fundraise for the cause this year.

Personhood Initiatives and the Threat To Infertility Treatment in 2012
"Don't Ignore" Infertile People in the Fight Against "Personhood"!
The threat to women's rights and access to health care under such a definition are frightening and very wide-reaching. Of course, much of the media has focused on the fact that Personhood would make abortion - at any time during pregnancy - completely illegal. Even certain kinds of birth control which prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg would be illegal. But what isn't focused on as much in the media is how Personhood bills and amendments would limit access to certain types of fertility treatments for those who are trying to get pregnant! The use of In Vitro Fertilization could be outlawed, as would cryopreservation of the embryos of cancer patients, trying to preserve their fertility before undergoing surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.
While some supporters of Personhood initiatives claim that fertility treatments will be protected, the wording of their proposed legislation is hazy at best. One of the most recent proposals in Virgina stated "Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as affecting lawful assisted conception." However, this was after already defining certain types of assisted contraception involving the use of fertilized embryos as unlawful. Fortunately, the bill was defeated by the Virginia state sentate - or at least deferred until next year. But other states are likely to see Personhood proposals and bills introduced this year, particularly as the Presidential election season warms up.
RESOLVE's Personhood Bills in the News page is a good way to stay informed about which states are facing Personhood battles in the coming months. Stay informed, write your local politicians, and help protect the rights of women and their access to health care - and fertility treatments!

Busting Myths About Infertility
The focus of the 2011 NIAW campaign was to Bust a Myth about Infertility. There are so many misconceptions, myths and lies propagated about infertility that an important part of the awareness campaign is to spread some truths instead. RESOLVE challenged participants to blog about their experiences challenging these myths, some of those classic (and wrong headed) statements such as:"As soon as you adopt, you'll get pregnant!"
"If you just relax, you will get pregnant."
"Infertility isn't a disease."
"If God wanted you to have children, you would have them."
"I don't need to talk to anyone about this. It's private."
"I'm less of a man because I can't get my wife pregnant."
Here are just a few of the wonderful responses generated by the challenge. Read them to learn more about the real experiences of infertility today...

- I speak to women weekly who struggle with infertility. I don't think people quite realize how emotionally painful this can be. So many women tell me how alone they feel with it all. Such an important topic!

- Excellent topic. People don't talk about infertility enough, then when it happens to you, you feel alone and singled out.
