National Pet Memorial Day
Words cannot describe the sense of loss we feel when our faithful friend dies. It is often one of life's most heart-wrenching experiences. Recognizing the importance of remembering our cherished pets, the second Sunday of September is the official National Pet Memorial Day. This is a day set aside to remember our departed companions and special members of our family.
One of the things many of us find helpful is to remember and honor the memory of our pets on an annual basis. And the advantage of a day like National Pet Memorial Day, rather than the date of their death, is that we are likely to find solace among others who share the same feelings as we do.
This year, National Pet Memorial Day was September 14 and next year it will be September 13.
Recognize our Loss

It's so important to recognize that everyone experiences loss in a different way and that it's ok for us to acknowledge our love for our companions and the grief we feel when a "pet" passes on.
For some of us, these are not pets, they are special members of our family, and many times they are our "kids".
Even those who are not animal lovers can show support for a friend or co-worker who loses a pet by simply giving a sympathy card or telling us "I'm sorry for the loss your dog." You may never realize how thoughtful and special we will think this gesture is.
Suggestions for marking National Pet Memorial Day

- write a poem, story, or song about and/or dedicated to your pet
- write a letter to your pet expressing feelings you may be struggling with, tell them how much you miss them, or thank them for the wonderful memories you have
- share photographs and stories with family or friends; remembering the special times, the love and joy they brought us
- visit their burial site, hold a remembrance ceremony with family and friends
- create a living memorial by planting a tree, bush, or flowergarden
- create an online memorial, whether it be on a pet memorial website, blog or Squidoo lens. I created a tribute website for my precious Ruger who we still miss very much
- explore the Internet for pet memorial sites with inspiring stories of love and devotion between people and their companions
- make a personalized magazine cover for your pet, a great way to catalog the fond memories of the times shared using pictures, and great headlines to share with everyone
- use this day to volunteer at your local animal shelter or a rescue group
- use this day to make a donation in memory of your companion to a local animal charity, shelter or rescue group

Jane Siberry - Calling All Angels Lyrics
When I Was a Boy Album (1993)
Santa Maria, Santa Teresa, Santa Anna, Santa SusannahSanta Cecilia, Santa Copelia, Santa Dominica, Mary Angelica
Frater Achad, Frater Pietro, Julianus, Petronella
Santa, Santos, Miroslaw, Vladimir
all the rest
oh a man is placed upon the steps, and a baby cries
high above you can hear the church bells start to ring
and as the heaviness oh the heaviness, the body settles in
somewhere you can hear a mother sing
then it's one foot then the other
as you step out on the road, step out on the road
how much weight? how much?
then it's how long? and how far?
and how many times ohhhh before it's too late
calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
calling all angels
calling all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
but we're not sure how ...
oh and every day you gaze upon the sunset
with such love intensity
why it's...it's almost as if
you could only crack the code
then you'd finally understand what this all means
ah, but if you could...do you think you would
trade it all
all the pain and suffering?
ah, but then you'd miss
the beauty of the light upon this earth and
and the sweetness of the leaving
calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
callin' all angels
callin' all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
but were not sure why
calling all angels
calling all angels
calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
callin' all angels
callin' all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
we're hurtin'
we're lovin'
we're cryin'
we're callin'
cause we're not sure how this goes

Ruger graced this world on March 3, 1992 and on December 13, 2004 a piece of my heart went with her and is gone forever. Although she is gone, I know deep in my heart that from the day her daddy rescued her as such a little puppy so many years ago, sh...
A Time to Remember
By John Quealy
They come into our lives for such a short timeA time we wouldn't trade not even for a dime
Then before you know it the years have flown by
And then all of the sudden we're saying good-bye
It wasn't that long ago we said our good-byes
We held on to you tight as you closed your eyes
Your spirit has flown home on the wings of a dove
Into God's loving arm's; in heaven above
Over the days we've shed many tears
But the memories we have will live on for years
We feel your presence and we know that your near
You're keeping us safe and calming our fear
We think about memories from years past
When you were young and strong and ran so fast
We remember all the great times that we all had
How you always made us happy never made us mad
They were the best and happiest years we had
We'll always look back on them and never be sad
We look forward to the time we'll be together again
And we thank the Lord for such a great friend
Now you run and play up in Heaven above
Cradled in God's arms covered with his love
Playing by the Bridge waiting for the day
We come down thru the meadow to the bridge to stay
The love that you showed us we'll never forget
Because to us you're one very special pet
You're like a star in the dark of night
Always watching over us with the Lord's light
So now we take time to remember our best friend
Who will always be with us even to the end
We'll always remember you the way you were
One big lovable huggable pile of fur

What a great lens! we, too, lost our beloved dog just last month. I kept his dish in the same spot for a while since I've had dreams of him just going about the house and garden. It just felt so real. I still talk to him once in a while as if he were around. :-)

Congrats on Lens of the day. It is beautiful. We lost our cat, Domino a plain black and white tuxedo shorthair last year and I still miss him terribly. He is buried in the back yard with a memorial stone.
