Ways to Celebrate National Pet Week

National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, and is widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world. In 2010, National Pet Week is celebrated from May 2-8.

Pet week is designed to celebrate the bond between human and animals, promote responsible pet ownership and to promote awareness to veterinary medicine.

1. Volunteer at your local animal shelter.

2. Save an animal's life, adopt a pet from an animal shelter.

3. Attend a pet show or enter your pet in a pet show or contest.

4. Enter your pet in a photo contest.

5. Sign up for a pet training courses. Sign your pet up for obedience school.

6. Donate money to an animal shelter, such as the SPCA. $10 can provide food and refuge for a cat for one more day, which could mean the difference between life and death. Visit www.spca.org for more information on how to donate.

7. Celebrate Pet Week with photos of your pets. Make a collage or printable calendar with your pet's photos.

8. Join a pet club. You can find a pet club on the Internet or through your local shelter or pet supply store.

9. Use a video camera to make a video of your pet for your family archives

10. Make a "stop animal abuse" sign or poster. You can display it in your yard, on your front door or in a window or in your car window.

Adopt a dog from a animal shelter instead of a pet store or animal breeder and you'll save as much as $300 in vaccinations and spaying or neutering fees and hundreds (sometimes thousands) more in adoption fees.
