National Rubber Ducky Day

Ranked #5,643 in Holidays & Celebrations, #77,475 overall

Did you know that Rubber Ducks have a day devoted to them? They do! January 13th is National Rubber Ducky day.

A few local museums have celebrations. They have rubber ducky story time, rubber ducky races, create yellow finger paintings and let people ride duck boats. Sadly, there are no museums near me that celebrate, But, I didn't let that stop me! I invented my own traditions. I have collected many items that you can use and games that you can play on this great holiday.

These ideas would also work for a Ducky birthday or for a baby shower theme.

Rubber Ducky song

Back in the 1970s, Ernie from Sesame Street sang his famous song "Rubber Ducky". It is a great song -- so great that this song from a children's show hit the Billboard chart. It is also thought that Ernie's ducky had something to do with the holiday. That is because January 13th is Ernie's Duck's birthday!

Fact

No one knows who made the first rubber duck. But, people have found duckies from as early as the late 1800s.

Cool Games that you can play

Do you want some games at your party? Here are a few duck themed games:

Duck Duck Goose - You don't even have to change the rules of this game. The standard one will work just fine.

Pin the bill on the ducky - Draw and cut out a large yellow shape for the duck and an orange section for the bill. Put double sided tape on the back of the bill.

Lucky Duck - Get as many rubber duckys as there will be party guests. Put a different number on each duck. Put the duck in a tub of water. Give each party guest a number when they arrive. Sometime during the party pull different ducks out of the water. Whoever has that number wins a prize.

Bubble contest - Buy a bubble mixture or make your own. Have a contest to make the biggest bubble, or the most bubbles. Have lots of wands, strings and straws to make the bubbles.

Rubber Ducky Decor

The cheapest (but still great) way to decorate is a yellow and blue theme. So, blue for the tablecloth, yellow for the plates, plasticware and cups. The napkins would work with either yellow or blue. Streamers could be multiple colors of blue. Then you can put lots of white or pearl colored balloons near the streamers for a bubble look.

If you don't want to go to different locations to collect the materials, the easiest way to have a theme party is to buy plates, cups and napkins with that theme.

Luckily, rubber ducky is a common theme for baby showers and young baby birthdays. That means party supplies won't be that hard to find.

Rubber Ducky Day Crafts

The easiest craft is to find some ducky coloring pages - here are a few:

Collages are pretty simple. Just take multiple pictures and glue them onto a base. Here are a couple of ideas for a duck day collage:
  • You can make a yellow collage. Use magazines, beads and feathers.
  • You can get duck stickers or cut outs of ducks, blue paper, and white circles for bubbles. You will also need glue sticks. Glitter glue would also be fun. Allow everyone to make their own pictures.

A great craft is a visor. Once it is finished, they have a party hat:

Make a ducky
  • This craft makes a ducky with construction paper and a paper plate: Ducky with plates

Make a knick-knack
  • This craft takes little fish bowls, glass beads and little rubber ducks to make a cute take home item. Note: If kids are doing this craft, look for plastic fish bowls: Fish bowl craft

Fingerpaint a ducky
  • There is a recipe for finger paint a bit lower on this page.

Fact

Most rubber duckies today are not made out of rubber. They are made out of a vinyl plastic.

Squeaker or No Squeaker

There are two types of rubber ducks. One type has a little hole at the bottom that allows the duck to squeak, and the other doesn't have that hole.

The hole allows water to come in, and sometimes mold can start growing inside the ducky. But, it also allows you to squirt your friends. And, Ernie's duck could squeak. But the water inside the duckie could allow the duck to sink, and then you might not see it in the bath.

Which is better?

A duckie with a squeak

desertdarlene says:

Gotta have a squeak!

TheMeadMan says:

Serenia says:

definitely gotta have squeak - squeak and bubbles I say
Now is that name of some kind of british food?

A duckie with no squeak

Cupcake Toppers

I have found that cupcakes work better than cakes for parties. If you have a cake, someone has to be in charge of cutting and distributing. There are always problems about someone complaining that one person has a larger piece. With cupcakes, everyone has a similar size and design.

Here are a few decorations for cupcakes.

Moby Duck

The kids story is actually based on a real event. 28000 bath toys (not just ducks) fell off of a ship and floated in the ocean for a while. This story is about where the ducks ended up, and about other items that fell into the ocean.

Great book to read on Rubber Ducky day, or any other day.

Fingerpaint a ducky

a great craft for ducky day

Fingerpainting is something that even young children can do. Lots of kids love shoving their hands into squishy paint, and like the designs they can make, There are lots of places where you can buy finger paint, but if you use it enough you might want to make it yourself. There are lots of good recipes -- this is the quickest.

Yellow Finger Paint recipe
Ingredients
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 cups water
  • yellow food coloring (or whatever color you want to make)

Directions
Put the water water into a large bowl. Then, slowly add the flour while you are stirring. After all the flour is added, and it seems mixed, you can add the food coloring. You need to store this in the fridge, and it only lasts a few days. Make sure you use either heavy paper or something like wax paper - it is too wet for regular paper.
