Squirrel Appreciation Day On January 21

Since 2001 our country has celebrated National Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21st. It is a day to help our nut loving little friends during the time of year that they find it difficult to find food for themselves.

Even though these little critters can sometimes be quite the pests, they are really fun to watch. So, forgive them this one day for the tulip bulbs they ate from your flower beds, the pumpkin they demolished on your front porch, and the bird seed they spilled out of the bird feeder this year. The little guys do offer entertainment with their antics in the trees and running across the lawns.

Wondering how to celebrate this odd January holiday? Let's see if we can come up with some ideas.

Squirrel Food To Celebrate The Day With

This is a great way to offer some food to the squirrels who visit your backyard. It contains corn, nuts, and seeds that they like to eat and actually encourages them to stay away from the bird feeders. It is also a tasty meal for rabbits, chipmunks and other critters but January 21st is about the squirrels so this is a great gift to offer. If you get the other critters too, well lucky you!

I can tell you that the squirrels have stopped bothering my bird feeders since I started offering them this choice of food. I watched a squirrel chase off a Raven who was treating itself to some of the seeds in this squirrel treat.

Squirrels Need Protein

Squirrels need foods that are rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Things like seeds, pinecones, fruits, and green vegetation.

A Brave Squirrel Protects His Fallen Friend

Squirrels have families just like we do and they seem to have the ability to love each other in their own ways. This video shows one brave little guy or gal squirrel trying to keep the ravens away from his fallen friend. This is one brave little soul who will touch your heart!

All Creatures Have A Spiritual Purpose

the squirrel in Native American spirituality

gray squirrelBrother and sister squirrel bring us lessons in gathering but not in the nuts and seeds like they do. In Native American traditions the squirrel teaches that it is an honor to your future if you ready yourself for change. Sometimes that means lightening our load when we have gathered too many things. It might be stressful things, gadgets, thoughts, worries or pressures. Give away the gathered items that no longer serve you.

Squirrel also teaches about having a safe place for the things we gather. That would be a heart that is untroubled and a mind that is open to changes.

So, in my opinion, National Squirrel Appreciation Day does not seem such a nutty idea. It is a way to honor and provide for one of the creatures that share the earth with us.

Instead of trapping squirrels:

If our furry little nut loving friends are trying to set up residence in your attic or garage, a way to change their mind is to soak cotton balls in peppermint oil. The scent is pleasant to you but the squirrels don't care for it one little bit. They will move on to another location. That is better than traps and poisons. After all, what if the squirrel you trapped or poisoned was a mother squirrel...her babies would not have anyone to raise them.

I love to see them when I am in the US, they are lovely creatures, always seem quite friendly - although I suppose I can understand those who might view them as pests... I'm fascinated by them and am always trying to get pictures of them. If I did live there, I would definitely celebrate and won't forget it since it also happens to be my mum's birthday on Jan 21st :)

Did you know that you will hardly see a squirrel in Italy and Japan? In fact, the Italians and Japanese will excitedly whip out their cameras to take a picture of a squirrel if it crosses their path. I am Canadian and I used to see them absolutely everywhere when I was still living there.

I love watching squirrels... but here, in the county I live in, there's an ordinance against feeding of wild animals. One lady went to jail for feeding the deer on her property a few years ago! So I don't feed them, but I love talking to them, and watching them work and play.
