Nationalism

Nationalism is the social and political philosophy in which the nation state is regarded as of supreme importance and that people should be loyal above all to their own country or nation.

Nationalists emphasize the shared history and common destiny of the people living in their country. This often leads to a belief in the superiority of one's own country and its values over those of countries and peoples. It also leads to an emphasis on the self interest and rights of one's own country and the disregard of those of other countries.

In its moderate forms, nationalism may be defended (as it was by Rousseau) as preferable to the sovereignty of empires, but in its extreme forms nationalism has led to fascism and war between countries.

Nationalism first arose about the time of the French Revolution (1789).
