National Parks Quarters: Celebrating America the Beautiful

Beginning in the year 2010 and continuing until the year 2021 the United States Mint is producing a series of coins featuring America's National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Recreation Areas and other historic locations. Officially named the America the Beautiful series, many collectors (as well as the general public) have begun calling the series the National Park Quarter. And if the State Quarter series can be used as a comparison, the America the Beautiful Quarter Series will be extremely popular among collectors in the general population (especially children) for years to come!

A Conservationist on the Coin?

Did you know that Theodore Roosevelt Could Have Been There?

Theodore Roosevelt CoinTheodore Roosevelt was proposed as the image to grace the obverse of the National Park Quarter series.
During a meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, members voted unanimously that President Theodore Roosevelt should be considered as the portrait to appear on the obverse of the coin due to "his contribution to the cause of conservation and his historical importance in general."
Roosevelt set aside more land for national parks and nature preserves during his time as president than all previous presidents combined. 194 million acres of land were allocated for national forests, national wildlife refuges, and special interest areas.

What Do You Think of U.S. Commemorative Coins?

Commemorative coins are those which celebrate or commemorate specific people, events, or locations. Recently the United States Mint has begun issuing annual commemorative coins for circulation, so that the designs of coins change one or more time per year. Examples of these are the State Quarter, the Presidential Dollar, the Bicentennial Lincoln Cent, and the Native American Dollar coins. Some people really like the idea of coinage changing on a regular basis. They say that it generates interest in coins and coin collecting. Some people really dislike the changing designs, saying that it is confusing. The U.S. Mint likes the idea due to the fact that they make money on proof and commemorative sets that they sell. What are your thoughts about regularly changing designs commemorating people, places, and things?
