Immigration and Native American DNA Testing

DNA vs. The Book of Mormon

THIS FILM AVAILABLE ON DVD FOR $4 A COPY AT: http://www.lhvm.org/order.htm For more than 170 years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has declared the Book of Mormon to be a scriptural and literal history. Subtitled "Another Testament of Jesus Christ," it recounts the story story of an Israelite family who immigrated to and fully populated the American continents. Jesus, after His death and resurrection, is said to have visited this once-great Israelite civilization existing in the Americas. The Book of Mormon teaches that these Israelites are the principal ancestors of modern-day Native Americans. New discoveries in DNA research currently allow scientists to test this historical claim. Thousands of Native Americans from more than 150 tribes have been tested to determine their ancestry. Now the same DNA evidence used in courts of law can credibly speak to the validity of The Book of Mormon, which serves as the foundation of the Mormon religion. The evidence answers one basic question: Are Israelites the principal ancestors of Native Americans? "DNA vs. The Book of Mormon" presents the evidence from DNA researchers, including Mormon scientists, who are wrestling with the DNA dilemma that now faces Mormonism. Participants: Thomas W. Murphy; Dr. Simon Southerton; Dr. Randall Shortridge, and others.

Is it racist to do Native American DNA Testing

Ward Churchill says DNA testing is racist

Fired University of Colorado Ethnic Studies Professor Ward Churchill speaks at Left Hand Bookstore in Boulder, Colorado. He first infers a 100% exact match on Indians who were in reservation boarding schools with acute alchoholism. Then he says that trying to find things that are inherent to the culture through scientific methods such as DNA testing is really "trying to blame the victim"

Skulls can tell the results for Native American DNA Testing

StarChild Skull *Human-Alien-Hybrid*

The starchild skull came into the possession of Lloyd Pye, a writer and lecturer in the field of alternative knowledge, in February 1999. According to Pye, the skull was found around 1930 in a mine tunnel about 100 miles (160 km) southwest of the Mexican city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, buried alongside a normal human skeleton which was exposed and lying supine on the surface of the tunnel. The skull is abnormal in several aspects. A dentist determined, based on examination of the upper right maxilla found with the skull, that it was a child's skull, 4.5 to 5 years in age. However, the volume of the interior of the starchild skull is 1600 cubic centimeters, which is 200 cm³ larger than the average adult's brain, and 400 cm³ larger than an adult of the same approximate size. The orbits are oval and shallow, with the optic nerve canal situated at the bottom of the orbit instead of at the back. There are no frontal sinuses. The back of the skull is flattened, but not by artificial means. The skull consists of calcium hydroxyapatite, the normal material of mammalian bone. Carbon 14 dating was performed twice, the first on the normal human skull at the University of California at Riverside in 1999, and on the Starchild skull in 2004 at Beta Analytic in Miami, the largest radiocarbon dating laboratory in the world. Both independent tests gave a result of 900 years ± 40 years since death.DNA testing in 1999 at BOLD, a forensic DNA lab in Vancouver, British Columbia found standard X and Y chromosomes in two samples taken from the skull. BOLD was unable to extract any DNA from the maxilla.Further DNA testing at Trace Genetics, which unlike BOLD specializes in extracting DNA from ancient samples, in 2003 recovered mitochondrial DNA and determined that the child had a human mother, though it was not the child of the skull found with it. Its mother did belong to a known Native American haplogroup, haplogroup C. However, useful lengths of nuclear DNA for further testing could not be recovered.Later testing in 2004 at the Royal Holloway Institute at the University of London revealed unexplained "fibers" in the bone of the skull and a reddish residue in the cancellous bone, neither of which are known or recorded to exist prior to the discovery.

Article on Native American DNA Testing

DNA testing has become more popular due to the available and cost. People are curious and today we can look back in history and discover our heritage. Ever wonder where your ancestors came from? Many of us are only able to trace back our ancestry a couple of generations. But what if you
could trace your heritage all the way back to the
beginnings of the human race in Africa? With Ancestry by DNA test, you can.

Over thousands of years, our ancestors migrated from Africa to other parts of the world. And as the groups branched out, their DNA evolved to have signature features. By analyzing your genetic code, we can identify these features in your genetic makeup, unlocking the secrets of your ancestral heritage. You'll discover what percentage of your DNA that can be traced to each of the following ancestry origins:

African
European
Asian
Native American

It's fast, it's simple, and it gives you an entirely new perspective on your place in human history.

DNA Test Percentage of genetic ancestry is calculated based on 175 known ancestry informative SNP markers.
Use the AncestrybyDNA (General Ancestry) test if:

You've never had your ancestral DNA analyzed before.

You're looking to determine your genetic percentage of Native American, European, East Asian, and/or African ancestry

Autosomal STR: STRs are short tandem repeats found in the genetic material (or DNA) that makes up the human genome. Several different STRs, regions that are highly variable in length from individual to individual, have been located and examined. The size of the STR is what scientists look at to help answer questions regarding relatedness. The different sizes of DNA found at these STR regions correspond to, what geneticist call, alleles. These alleles are passed on from parents to offspring.

By examining random individuals within a particular population, each allele is found to have a frequency associated with it within that group. It is these frequencies that researchers use to calculate the probabilities of relatedness. We uses STRs to measure probabilities of paternity, and most other DNA relationship test, including the Y-chromosome Haplotyping.

Y-chromosome Haplotype: Y-chromosome haplotypes are used for testing descendants with a common paternal link in their genealogical lineage. For example, if a group of males have strictly a male descent line (may have the same last name, such as Carmichael), and they are thought to all be related to a common male ancestor, examining the Y-chromosomes of the individuals in common makes it fairly easy to support or disprove this hypothesis.

By looking at Y-chromosome markers from all of the terminal males with the same paternal descent (all the males with the Carmichael Surname) we would suspect that they should all share the same Y-chromosome markers (with allowances made for calculated mutation rates, which should be small given less than 8 or 9 generations). This test could also be used to distinguish non-paternity in the line, a question that one might not want answered. Although this method is quite a useful tool for genealogists, it is not without its limitations. For example, examining the Y-chromosome haplotypes doesn't give a lot of information about degree of relatedness, just a type of inclusion or exclusion from the family. The figure on the right shows the Y-chromosome Inheritance Pattern.

The different Y-chromosomes are represented by difference colors, and are passed from father to his male children (males are represented by circles with arrows that point up and to the right, and females are represented by circles with crosses pointing straight down).

Genelex has been offering DNA Print Genomics ethnicity DNA testing for several years that verified Native American ancestry. During the latter part of January DNA Print informed us that their company would be ceasing operations and can no longer provide results for these tests. The end result is that we at Genelex can no longer offer this test. Unfortunately, DNA Print holds the patent for this testing technology so the exact same test cannot be found through an alternate vendor.
