Learning about Native Americans While Staying Out West

American Indians, or Native Americans are titles given to the people who inhabited what is now the United States of America before the early "white man" or settlers took over the land. I feel blessed to be an American, and love my Country, but I think most would agree that this was one of our times in history that it's hard to feel proud of...at least I feel that way. I wish things could have been different for these people...many were peaceful, some where not, but all were protecting the land that was theirs.

I find beauty in pictures and artwork depicting the Native American way of life, and find joy in purchasing their hand-crafted silver and turquoise jewelry and other items. It is a way of life that should never be forgotten, and preserving it through art and craft, and honoring the ancestors that still live among us, is one way we can do this.

The interest I already had in the Native Americans increased when my husband took me with him from my home in the northeastern part of the USA to the part of the country where he was raised. He is from Colorado, and our trips have taken us through many of the western States. I remember seeing the stands along the road with American Indians selling their hand-made jewelry in Arizona and at the entrance to the Grand Canyon...I don't know if they are still there today. In some places, all around we were surrounded by a rugged red earth and stone landscape as far as the eye could see. So beautiful.

I hope you enjoy the Native American artwork in various forms here...art photos, prints, hand-crafted art...as well the other features throughout this page.

What Is the Most Acceptable Title?

Native American, American Indian, or Something Else?

I may be a little naive in my use of terms, and your help would be appreciated. I use the terms "American Indian" or "Native American" to refer to those who are descendants of the people who lived in America before the first settlers came from Europe. Help me to make sure I'm using my terms correctly.

Understanding and Buying Art Prints

A Few Tips

Some of this may be obvious to you, but if you are new to buying prints, I hope this will be helpful.

A Photo or Photographic Print is copied from an authentic photo. It is as close to having the original photograph as you can get.

All other prints are copied through careful process from original paintings by various artists. When you visit the site by clicking the picture or link in the text under the picture, you will be able to view and purchase the print as is, framed or in other formats that are available for that particular print. You can also use search terms once you click through for a wider range of prints on a particular theme or topic.

Prints are a fraction of the cost of most original works of art.

Native American Chants, Drums, Music, and Stories

When we stayed in Arizona on two extended business trips, we stayed in an apartment. In one of the downstairs corner apartments where Native American neighbors lived, we would often hear drums and chanting as they enjoyed playing their music...and sometimes they would wear their traditional clothing.

Here is a large selection of MP3's so you can get a sampling of some of the things we might have been hearing. They are fun to listen to, but also available for sale if that interests you.

Wisdom - a Sioux Indian Prayer

Wisdom

This is not only pleasing to look at, but includes a Sioux Indian Prayer. As I read it, I realized that it is not so far off from the kind of prayer I say to God, the creator of all things, who is so much greater than I am, who wants me to see Him in all of the things He has created around me, and rely on His wisdom. It speaks of coming to the Great Spirit without shame when life fades...I can come to God who's Holy Spirit is within me without shame because of what Jesus Christ has done for me.

Sitting Bull Photo Print

Sitting Bull was a holy man and tribal leader of the Lakota Sioux people. He lived from 1831 - 1890 during the years that Native Americans were resisting the takeover of the Native American lands and is noted for defeating General Custer and the 7th Cavalry during the battle at Little Big Horn. For a time he performed with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He later returned to South Dakota, and making a long story short, was ultimately killed by the Standing Rock Society police during a conflict that arose when the police were fired on by supporters of Sitting Bull. When we traveled through South Dakota, we stopped at a memorial dedicated to Sitting Bull.
