Making a Native Star "Parol"

A star adds the glow in the house, here's how to make one.

Have you tried making a Star Parol or Christmas Star lantern the native way, purely from what is present and from what you can find in the background? I love to these parols because I know that they are beautiful and elegant at the same time it is biodegradable, meaning, we can save our environment from getting dirty and even more polluted. Read on through and you might find some helpful tips and get interested in making one.

I remember

When I was a little younger, my brother brought home a big star parol out from small mongo beans. I was really amazed because it was the first time I saw something that creative and it was something not bought but something uniquely made from the heart and creativity.

A keepsake for Christmas!

What are the things you need

The number one thing you need is creativity and of course, resourcefulness. These will go a long way.

Other things you need include:
> mongo beans, of course
> sticks to make the basic star
> newspapers or used paper as the covering of the star
> glue and water mixture
> strings/tie
> small brush

But actually you can use other beans if you like, mongo are cheaper though...

Or how about using other native things like:
- dried leaves.
- coconut husk
- ropes/strings
- sticks/toothpicks
- drinking straw
- sand, fine sand/ white sand

and a lot more...

How do you start?

Start by having a picture of how you want your parol to look life, make a drawing or sketch of how it will come out and estimate how big it will be.

After that assemble the sticks which will serve as the skeleton of the parol/lantern. Make it as big as you want and make the outline of the parol/lantern on the sketch or drawing.

Once that is done, cover the skeleton of the parol with the newspaper. Cover the entire part of it or you could leave some if that's you want it to look like.

Once that is done, the fun part begins.

the fun part...

Once the parol/lantern is already there, all covered up.

Get your glue and water mixture and spread it all over the skin of the parol/lantern.

When it all wet with glue, sprinkle the mongo beans all over the area until it is fully covered with the mongo beans.

Get wet and messy, okay! It's more fun that way.

you can paint it or leave it as it is since you wanted the native color, right?

You can add lights and anything you like... just to make it more unique you..
