    Hi Veronica,
I'm very "newbie" on Squidoo, just made my first lens.
I'm glad I found your site. The reason I'm writing to you is; I want to share something with you that might be of interest to you too.
To make a story short: In 2011 I made a walking Journey of 2,000 miles, tracing the migration of Lenape Indians aka Delaware Indians from East coast to Oklahoma.
As a matter of fact in about a month we'll be celebrating the first anniversary of the Trail. I Called my journey a Trail Of Hope. ( not sure if I can include my blog here for you to check it out)[trailofhopeblog.com]
Let me know if you'll be interested in ......whatever.
    All the best,
    Ohelemuxwet - (that's my Indian name )
(No, I'm not a Native, as a matter of fact I was born in Europe)

I love reading about Native American traditions; they seem to be so much more in tune with Mother Nature than other cultures in North America. I've only done some reading on the Cherokee, since I from Tennessee, but after reading this I might look into the Sioux and other tribes.

Moccasins are great shoes, I don't know about wearing beaded ones but it's good to see arts and crafts which are entirely homemade.
  • Ramkitten Feb 1, 2012 @ 5:14 pm | delete
You've really put a lot into this. Where I live, it's Navajo art and culture that dominates the Native American "scene." Hopi as well. We have some downtown shops with some gorgeous pieces, and you also find some beautiful handmade arts and crafts at roadside stands.
  • Tolovaj Jan 27, 2012 @ 2:15 pm | delete
We (in Europe) are still full of stereotypes about native Americans and don't really know there were so many differences between tribes. your lens could be of great help to better understanding. Thumbs up!

I can remember vividly the illustrations and art work depicting the Native American way of life in my U.S. history book as a student in the 1950's and early sixties. I learned later as an adult how the Lakota Sioux migrated from what is now Known as Minnesota several hundred years ago.

The Lakota Sioux moved westward and encounter the Horse that they tamed and became skilled horsemen and mobile society. Able to follow the trail of the Buffalo annual migrations across the Plains( this how tribes became known as "Plains Indians") that included several distinct tribes such as the Pawnee and Blackfoot.

I have enjoyed reading this lens and its abundance of available resources for those interested on further research on America's "First People".

Is feather a must-have for native American arts? Just curious.
  • vbright105 Oct 18, 2010 @ 9:41 pm | delete
Native Americans many times use feathers as a symbol and a source of beauty, but there are many crafts done without use of feathers. It certainly is not a rule, spoken or unspoken, that I am aware of.

Thank you Liz. The really sad part is that the younger people are losing the Spirit of their ancestors. Especially on some of the reservations where life is so hard. Their handcrafted art is still a marvel, though

It feels sad that a great tradition and the people who created and nurtured it, find themselves sidelined and marginalized. But that I guess is how life works. All that begins, ends one day, and something new that is equally great and inspiring takes over. Very informative lens about the ways of American Indians.

Congrats on the purple star! Great lens. Since I was born near the Flathead reservation in Montana and then lived for many years near the Mescalero reservation and Taos in New Mexico, I learned at a very early age to appreciate the history and traditions of the original peoples of the U.S. (the dine'eh - as the Navaho would say). I've lensrolled this beautiful lens to my Kokopeli lens and my lenses on Montana and New Mexico. Great job!

My great grandmother was a native American, but I have almost no information about that part of my heritage. The family stories I heard as a child were not flattering to my great grandfather, and great grandmother died when grandmother was only 7. I appreciated this lens tremendously.

I was born and raised during my early years near Flathead Lake, Montana -- home of the Flathead Indian Tribe. Through my adopted Grandpa--who had married a Flathead Native--I learned a lot about the Sioux, the Crow, and the Nez Pierce' tribes. When I was 6, my family moved from Montana to New Mexico--and lived within 50 miles of the Mescalero Apache homelands. It was there that I learned so much more about Native American culture and languages. I've since moved many times around the country (and the world--including Japan, Guam, Philippines, Hong Kong and most of the Pacific Islands)--and returned briefly to New Mexico (Albuquerque), where I learned more about the Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo Native Americans. I've done some lenses on Montana, New Mexico, Kokopelli, and many other places that have inspired me to learn more about the art and cultures of the many tribes around the world--including ours! Please come to visit and say "Yatahe!" Thanks for a great lens!

What fascinating stories about the Sioux Nation. Their art is truly beautiful and filled with their history. I have had a Dream Catcher above my bed for many years and believe in its significance and that of the Medicine Wheel Circle of Life and Death. I've long admired the values and beliefs of the Lakotas. Thank you for this really special lens.

I feel a resonance with Lakota culture, partly because I love the Badlands and the Black Hills. I've been seeing a lot of eagles lately and feel as though I'm being blessed. 5*

I came across your page and noticed your interest in American Indian culture. (That's what we called ourselves in the 60's) I am Iroquois Seneca from western NY and ironically, I have 3 grandsons who are all Sious: two, Lakota and the other, Mandan. I also remember reading portions of "Black Elk Speaks" and loved it. I never get tired of Smoke Signals either! I'm doing the 30 Day Challenge right now, so I haven't got to the Squidoo lesson yet. Congratulations on your position in the Squidoo ranks!

Oh Vbright... I am Sittonbull! How could I not love this lens? In reality, I have great admiration and appreciation for much of Native American history, particularly their kinship, knowledge and appreciation for mother earth and the role of all creatures they shared her with! I read extensively factual and fictional novels having Native Americans in their theme and have often wished/(felt) I was there in that time... particularly among the first white men to set eyes on the Western lands. My children will tell you while with me on several "week long" horseback trips in Bridger/Teton National Park, Wyoming and The Great Divide ride between Alberta and BC, I am living my fantasy as one of those early wanderers in that spectacular setting! Back to you... your lensography is fascinating to me and I will be back! Thanks so much for your blessing of mine. 5*, favored, fan, twittered

You know, Veronica - several years ago, I was really involved with Native American spirituality. It actually helped me to get sober when I read the channelings of "White Eagle" by Grace Cook. I feel a deep connection with these teachings. A singer/songwriter friend of mine, Bobby Bridger, talked a lot about Lakotas and "Black Elk". 5*s and a SquidAngel Blessing for your lens.
