Native American Spirituality

You might have more brothers and sisters than you think!

"We need to find and self-activate universal wisdom, by remembering and acknowledging that we are magical and universal human beings."-Samantha Britt Williams

This lens will help to introduce you to the way Native Americans interact spiritually with the earth, and with all the living things that live on earth. They honor the connection between us all whether we walk on two legs or four and offer ways to connect more deeply to the world around you in both an energetic and a spiritual sense.

The Concept of Animal Medicine

This spiritual approach of finding power animals and spirit animals and animal allies all begins with the belief that they are our relatives, our "relations" and that they have "medicine" to share with us. But this medicine is not the traditional kind that most of us think of when we hear the word.

For Native Americans, "medicine" is anything that connects us more deeply to the divine (or "Great Mystery") and to life, in general. Healing of our bodymind and our spirit is part of that and so is personal power.

"This medicine is also anything that brings personal power, strength, and understanding. It is the constant living of life in a way that brings healing to the Earth Mother and to all of our associates, family, friends and fellow creatures. Native American medicine is an all-encompassing 'way of life,' for it involves walking on the Earth Mother in perfect harmony with the Universe."-Jamie Sams and David Carson, Medicine Cards

Animal medicine suggests that we have access to this empowerment all the time because of our connection to certain animals that have come to be with us for a lifetime. But it also encourages us to ask for what we need if we do not have it. To borrow from the traits of animals who have what we need.

"When you call upon the power of an animal, you are asking to be drawn into complete harmony with the strength of that creature's essence. Gaining understanding from these brothers and sisters of the animal kingdom is a healing process, and must be approached with humility and intuitiveness." --Jamie Sams and David Carson, Medicine Cards

Also called Medicine Wheel Astrology

type=textMedicine Wheel Astrology

"Every culture on earth has a link to the invention of some form of astrology and various forms of calendar. %u2026 Native Americans have always been people of the land rather than city dwellers, so it is not surprising that the animals related to the seasons and areas in which they lived have become part of their astrology."-Deborah Durbin, Simply Native American Astrology

Seasons

"Native American astrology uses the images of creatures to depict the seasons. These creatures exist in addition to the twelve 'zodiac' signs of the medicine wheel. They mark the turning point of each season and also the turning points during each day (dawn, noon, dusk, mid-night). The four 'seasonal' creatures are the white buffalo, the golden eagle, the coyote, and the grizzly bear." -- Deborah Durbin, Simply Native American Astrology

They also connect different animals, seasons and elements to the four directions on the medicine wheel: North, South, East and West. Using medicine wheel astrology, you can discover your major power animal and your minor ones.

Twelve-Month Calendar

Though there are some Native Americans still using the Aztec agricultural calendar, most now use a 12-month lunar calendar and have aligned it and the medicine wheel with dates used in Western astrology.

"The twelve Moons [they use] correspond to the weather or activities that one would expect to occur during each season. Each astrological sign also corresponds to a tree, a stone and a color."-- Deborah Durbin, Simply Native American Astrology

Make Your Own Medicine Wheel

"To make and activate a simple Medicine Wheel all you have to do is place five rocks, crystals or anything you wish to use from nature in a circle while calling in each of the Spirit Keeper Power Animals. Start in the East, place a stone and visualise Golden Eagle, in the South is Coyote and the West is for Grizzly Bear. The North is for White Buffalo and then place the last stone in the Centre to represent Creator - this can be any animal you wish. That really is all there is to it, anyone can build and use a simple Medicine Wheel!"-Samantha Britt Williams

"How you feel about yourself and your past (what you carry 'within') deeply affects your outer world (what you experience and create in your life). To create a life worth living we must be free of childhood and adulthood pain so your future is directed and created with a clear emotional body feeling positive about the future."- Samantha Britt Williams

Power Animals

"A Power Animal is a protector, similar to a spirit guide, that represents an aspect of your soul."-Samantha Britt Williams

Permanent Guides: the Totem Animals

"The animals are spirit teachers that dwell in our unconscious mind, waiting for us to discover them."-- Stefanie Iris Weiss, Spirit Animals: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Animal Companions

Totem animals are the animal spirits that stay with you forever. They are like guardian angels who are ever-present in the background of your life, but who are available for closer relationship if you choose to connect in a deeper way.

Some people think of angels as companions who hover close to us, available in an instant if we need them. Totem animals are always there, too, but, along with spirit animals, can help you grow and develop spiritually.

Some Native Americans believe that you have one power or totem animal and many other spirit animals that come and go in your life as teachers. Others believe that you have more.

In their book, Medicine Cards, Jamie Sams and David Carson indicate that we each have nine totem animals, seven of which correspond to direction or location: East, West, North, South, Above, Below, and Within.

"The other two animals which make up your nine totems are the ones that are walking at each side of you at all times and that may have been coming to you for years in dreams," the authors say. They go on to explain that you also may have encountered these animals in other ways and may have felt drawn to them for a reason unknown to you at the time.

Temporary Companions: Spirit Animals

"Finding your spirit animal is a way to take a moment to breathe, reconnect, and remember what it means to be a human, not a robot. Your spirit animal can help reveal what your purpose is. If you're in need of guidance, healing, or protection, you just might find it with one of the animals illustrated in this book."-Stefanie Iris Weiss, Spirit Animals: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Animal Companions

How to Identify Your Power Animal

Dreamwork

You can place a pen and a journal by your bed each night and just before you go to sleep, ask to dream about any animals that are with you in spirit. Tell yourself that you will remember any dream that is important, and after a few nights, you are likely to find yourself dreaming the answers.

Meditation

If you decide to try meditating to know more about your power animals, here is a statement you could make as you begin...

"Right here, right now, I am reaching out for what I need. I may not know exactly what it is yet, but you do. Whatever shape you take, I open my mind and body to your spiritual wisdom. I want to see you, feel you, smell you, and understand you. I want to explore your habitat so you can fill my world with the healing and pure power that you posses. You are the next step on my path."--Stefanie Iris Weiss, Spirit Animals: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Animal Companions

If you would like to try the free recorded meditation that I have created to identify your power animal, go to To Heal and Grow and complete the form at the bottom of the page.

Intuitive Readings

Animal medicine cards can be used in several ways, but we will identify two here.

(1) You can draw cards specifically to find your permanent companions, your power animals, and use that guidance to learn about the character traits, strength and wisdom that is always available to you and that you can grow into even more.

(2) But you can also use them to discover which spirit animals have something to say to you in the moment. Guidance that is important for that day, or for a time, but not necessarily forever.

Very interesting! I was watching TV a few months ago. There was documentary on Kamchatka brown bears that made me sit up straight and say, "That is my son!". It was such a strong and strange feeling. As for me, no idea. My husband and I have the same clan animal, the frog. I chose a bride and groom frog for our wedding cake years ago. Kinda funny!

    Hi Jeanine,
I am part native american indian and part welsh. I did not know about the native part of my heritage until adulthood. As a child, teen and young adult, I had a special feeling to Great Horned Owls. I would see them at night, when working on a ranch in the Alberta foothills, one seemed to be always watching me - even others noticed. On a family reunion to England, I found that our family had an affinity to owls going back generations.
Then (inexplicably) frogs began to appear. I saw them around me in the forest, I moved to the west coast and they began to take up residence in our yard, they began to appear in my artwork. I was talking to my grandfather about it and was told about our native heritage and that my great grandfather was a member of the Tlingit Raven/Frog clan. I feel proud to have these protectors. Both have taken residence in our yard (along with Crows!)
    Thanks for your words!

About Jeanine

This lens is the first of a series about Native American spirituality, in general, and power animals, in particular.

Though there are Native Americans in my ancestry (several generations back) and I am happy to know it, my primary interest is the spirituality, which really resonates with me. I am a shamanic reiki practitioner, an intuitive counselor, and a person deeply grateful for my connection to all that is.

I just recently completed a two-year course of training to be spiritual mentor and Native American spirituality is one of the sweetest gifts from that two-year experience!

Thanks for visiting!
