Fly predators are tiny wasps that are harmless to humans. They lay their eggs in fly larva, so more wasps hatch out of the fly pupa instead of the flies. Fly Predators used in conjunction with manure management, maggot control and adult fly control are an effective way of reducing fly populations.I've been using them for several years now and have seen the results. My horses are much happier now that they don't have hundreds of flies swarming them. Since I don't have to spray them with fly spray every day I also save money.

I witnessed something I didn't expect the other day. I was out visiting with our horses and I saw a hornet flying around my horse. This concerned me and my horse. Then I noticed it kept going back and forth by a fly. Then it pounced on the fly and carried it off. I never realized hornets did this.
It made me think back when I was a kid we kept rabbits outside. The manure fell into piles under the cage and flies would congregate there. I watched yellow jackets do the same thing that this hornet did. So I think I'll leave these wasps alone from now on. They never have bothered me unless I bothered them first. A word about bees and wasps. They are attracted to movement and dark colors. They can also smell a chemical released when an animal is scared. This triggers a defensive response in the bees and wasps. So if you see one remain calm, don't move and it won't bother you.
