Natural Food for Aquatic Turtles

Feeding your turtle can be a daunting task when faced with the decision of which food is the best to buy. You want your turtle to be able to live a long and happy life, and that makes feeding your turtle good, healthy food very important. There are quite a few products on the market that you can feed your turtle. I have pulled some of them together here for you to browse and make your own informed decision on.

A turtle is a pretty easy pet to care for in my opinion. You just need to feed them, clean there aquarium, and give them a place to bask. (dry off) But to really have a happy and healthy turtle you have to invest a lot of time and love along with good nourishment. Just remember that you cannot rely on the turtle pellets alone to meet the requirements of your turtles diet. You will also need to feed you turtle aquatic plants and live or dried fish and insects and a few other treat to inure a long happy healthy life.

Turtles As Pets

Turtles are easy to maintain and feed

Turtles, like fish need an aquarium with a water filter. This enables you to keep the water fresh and clean for your turtle. With a filter you won't have to change the water quite so often but if you see the water getting cloudy - please do take the time to check your filter and clean the tank.

Temperature

A turtle needs to live in water that is between 68 - 80 degrees.

A Natural Food Supplement

For Your Growing Turtle

When we first got our turtle we were given some pellets that would aid in the growth of the turtle. You will also need to feed your turtle worms, insects and aquatic plants to help balance its diet.

After a while we noticed the Zoo Med brand of pellets and decided that a natural pellet (for us that is a product where we can read and understand the ingredients) was best. Zoo Med also has 35% protein the highest we found in our store for turtle food. For our turtle which is about 4" now it is a good match.

For the Growing turtle a protein rich pellet is best. If you have an older turtle try looking for the Maintenance Pellet.

Maintenance Food for the Older Turtle

Zoo Med Natural Aquatic Turtle Food, Maintenance Formula, 45-Ounce

As your turtle grows it really doesn't need a rich protein diet like it did when it was growing. This formula gives just 25% protein and suggested for turtles over 6".

My family had pet turtles growing up and Mom always took care of them. I never knew there was such a thing as pellets, so always gave them vegeys and Dad had to dig worms for them. Such a great idea to let kids learn how to care for a pet with a turtle.

My son does the digging for the worms. LOL I don't think I could stomach actually going through with the whole process of gathering them and feeding them to the turtle. I know it's part of nature but it still gets to me. Pellets are more my style.

We are finding more and more people who have pet turtles locally, so it isn't that unusual of a pet. I guess I just need to broaden my 'pet' mindset. Thanks for dropping by Sandy.

Taking Care of Turtles for Kids

A simple for guide for Children

Let's Take Care of Our New Turtle

Sometimes when I need to learn something I find a simple book from the childrens section. There is something about the presentation that is straight forward and pleasant about the way books for children are written. This is one book we found at our library that really helped my son [and most importantly me] get a better idea of how to care for his new pet.
