With summer here we are spending more time outside.  The warm weather makes it great to spend time in the garden, barbecuing on the grill, going to baseball games, camping or just taking the dog for a walk.  Nothing can ruin a nice day quicker then mosquitoes, flies, ticks and other biting insects.

The usual solution to this problem is using bug sprays that are toxic to the bugs, but also toxic to us.

Fortunately mother nature provides us with plants that naturally produce insect repelling oils.  Some of the most common plants and herbs used to repel insects include basil, citronella, catnip, lavender, pennyroyal and rosemary.

We can use extracts of these oils in a carrier oil or glycerin to apply to the skin to naturally keep pesky insects from ruining our day.  You can also plant these herbs around the yard to help to control the insect population in the area.
