What Is Mouthwash?

Mouthwash or mouth rinse is normally used to maintain oral health and hygiene. It is commonly used after teeth brushing and is swished or gargled for roughly half a minute then spat out.

Mouth rinse sold as antiseptic and anti-plaque claim to kill the bacterial plaque that causes tooth decay, gingivitis, and bad breath. They often use a large percentage of alcohol and that will actually aggravate dry mouth and bad breath.

Anti-cavity mouth rinses use fluoride to protect against cavities. In general it is agreed that the use of mouthwash does not eliminate the need for both brushing and flossing.

Healthy Mouth Natural Mouthwash from Jason does not have alcohol, fluoride, or saccharin. Instead, it relies on a healthy, natural and tasty blend of Aloe Vera, Cinnamon, Clove, and Tea Tree Oil to safely cleanse and protect your teeth and gums. It is the perfect compliment to Jason's Healthy Mouth Toothpaste.

I do use a stronger antiseptic Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash that does contain about 5% grain alcohol. Not on a daily basis, but usually for cleaning small cuts in my mouth when I get them. I believe using it once when one of my teeth broke and needed to be repaired with a root canal prevented a serious infection from setting in.

A little About The History Of Mouthwash

Mouth rinse as a medical treatment of gingivitis may date back as far as 2700 BC in traditional Chinese medicine, and a suggested cure for gum ailments containing "dough water" and olive oil is in the Jewish Talmud. Mouth rinsing after mechanical cleaning was common among the upper classes during the Greek and Roman periods and the Father of Modern Medicine, Hippocrates recommended using a mixture of salt, alum, and vinegar.

Besides water, commercial mouthwashes today may contain benzalkonium chloride, calcium, cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine gluconate, domiphen bromide, enzymes, eucalyptol, fluoride, hexetidine, hydrogen peroxide, menthol, methylparaben, methyl salicylate, and thymol. Sweeteners such as sorbitol, sodium saccharine, sucralose, and xylitol are usually included and some brands may have as much as 27% alcohol, which is more alcohol than is in beer or wine.

What Is In Mouthwash?

Do I really know what I'm putting in my mouth?

It amazes me what we are expected to use on a daily basis. From food and personal hygiene to household cleaners and lawn care, the products with dangerous and harmful ingredients are all over the place. Once you know what they are, and what they can do to you, you may find yourself looking for more natural products, too.

I've been looking into natural products as an alternative to what is normally available for most of the past 20 years. While I may not have been able to track down every article I've seen related to the less savory contents of mouthwash over the years, most of the following contains information that has been available for years mixed with newer articles that shed new light, or reinforce older research:

While mouthwashes are generally safe, some can cause side effects in patients who use them. For example, many over-the-counter mouthwashes contain high levels of alcohol that may range from 18 percent to 26 percent. Overuse of these rinses can create a burning sensation in the cheeks, teeth and gums. Additional side effects may appear as the result of use of certain types of prescription-strength mouthwashes.

Mouthwash is a great item to use, but almost 90% of mouthwashes are in fact made with alcohol which is used in killing germs in the mouth that cause plaque and other dental problems. In terms of swallowing mouthwash it's wise not to because there are also other chemicals present in mouthwash such as Cetylpyridinium chloride which is used as an agent to prevent gingivitis and plaque build up. That's just the active ingredient the others are sodium saccharin, which is a sweetener and is the same stuff used in diet sodas and drinks. Glycerin (a natural-occurring sweetener derived from sugar), water, poloxamer 407 (a preservative), and other can't-pronounce-the-name ingredients. This is what is in mouthwash from the 70s to the 2000s since many people didn't really use mouthwash back in the day since it wasn't a huge thing like it is now. Many people aren't aware that the alcohol in mouthwash is also a known carcinogen so that's why it's wise not to swallow this stuff and to supervise children using mouth wash and to follow instructions on the bottle since many children are victims to accidental poisoning due to administering incorrect dosages of mouthwash for a child up to the age of 12.

AUSTRALIA'S top-selling mouthwashes can cause oral cancer and should be pulled from supermarket shelves immediately.

Leading independent experts have issued this strong warning after investigating latest scientific evidence linking alcohol-containing mouthwashes to the deadly disease.

Not Just What's In Mouthwash

It's in your drinking water & toothpaste, too

Dr. William Marcus, believes that a study conducted by Battelle for the National Toxicology Program on the toxicology of fluoride shows that there were dose-related increases in bone cancer in male rats. Dr. Marcus also questions the removal by peer reviewers of cancers at other sites in the rats as well. Especially worrisome to Dr. Marcus is the fact that that levels of fluoride that caused the cancers in the rats were lower than those seen in humans who ingested lower amounts, but for a longer period. These levels are generated because fluoride is accumulated in the body and is not secreted.
- Hidden Danger in Your Drinking Water and Toothpaste

Parents with young children are often told that they need to be giving fluoridated water to their children to help combat tooth decay and promote the growth of strong, healthy teeth. Water fluoridation is the addition of a chemical to increase the concentration of fluoride ions in drinking water. The truth is, fluoride is a very toxic poison. Many water supplies in America are fluoridated with sodium fluoride which toxic byproduct from aluminum production. Sodium fluoride has also been used as rat poison for over 40 years. The evidence suggests that by fluoridating water, we are poisoning our children.
- Warnings and Dangers of Fluoride in Drinking Water

The Fluoride Action Network is an international coalition seeking to broaden public awareness about the toxicity of fluoride compounds and the health impacts of current fluoride exposures.

What the commercials don't say is that fluoride was known in the early 1900s as an excellent rat poison. According to Robert Carleton, former scientist with the EPA, fluoride is more toxic than lead, and not quite as toxic as arsenic. It's a waste product of many heavy industries-derived from the production of pesticides, fertilizers, aluminum, iron, steel, copper, lead, uranium, brick, cement and glass, among others....

....As it turns out, too much toothpaste may not be good for your health. Concerned that too many young children were swallowing toothpaste, the Food and Drug Administration, beginning in April 1997, required the following warning to appear on tubes of fluoridated toothpaste: "Use only a pea sized amount and supervise child's brushing and rinsing (to minimize swallowing)." Parents also are warned to keep the toothpaste "out of the reach of children under 6," and to "seek professional help or contact a poison center immediately" if more than is used for brushing is accidentally swallowed.

The FDA's decision also was spurred by the growing number of cases of dental fluorosis-an unsightly and permanent discoloration of the teeth. The Wall Street Journal reports that 22 percent of American children now have the condition, which occurs in young children under six who have consumed too much fluoride.

As possible side effects are usually found only within the small print on foods containing sorbitol, consumers may be unaware of its laxative effects and fail to recognize a link with their gastrointestinal problems
- Chewing gum weight loss warning

The warning comes after doctors came across two patients who had chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and dangerously excessive weight loss. After lengthy investigations which could not identify why the patients were losing so much weight and had chronic diarrhea and pains, a detailed analysis of eating habits put the problem down to eating too much chewing gum with sorbitol.

Natural mouthwashes don't use those harsh ingredients, instead they stick to pure and natural ingredients

Most of the ingredients in commercial mouthwash may be fine and safe to use, but other things like Benzalkonium Chloride, Cetylpyridinium Chloride, Methylparaben, Fluoride, Sorbitol, Saccharin, Alcohol, Artificial Colors and Artificial Flavors aren't ingredients I want to use, and I don't have to.

Aloe Vera - "Aloe Vera juice, needless to mention, is the fresh extract of Aloe Vera plant and this extract is highly rich with medicinal properties and is considered as most effective herbal medicine for a wide array of physical disorders and physical discomforts."

Cinnamon - "In 1985 Dr Jean C. Lapraz, a famed French researcher, reported that he couldn't find a single bacteria or virus that could live in the presence of the essential oils of cinnamon or oregano. Pretty common stuff - cinnamon and oregano - we use them every day in cooking and baking. Who would think that their essential oils would be anti-bacterial and anti-viral, killing those germs we generally believe require chemical antibiotics to overpower."

Clove - "Also known as clove essential oil, and not to be confused with infused clove oil. The main active ingredient in clove essential oil is eugenol, which is widely used in dental care, but can also be put to good use in household cleaning tasks due to its antiseptic, disinfectant, insecticidal and larvicidal properties."
- Oil of Cloves

Tea Tree Oil - "Tea tree oil contains consituents called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity. The compound terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and is thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's antimicrobial activity."
