First, some history

In ancient times when people fell ill it was naturally assumed that they were possessed by demons or had somehow upset the Gods. Priests and Shamans then set about to "heal" the sufferer by exorcising the evil spirits and returning that person to favourable position with their god.

Then around 3,000 years ago, philosophers in places such as Greece, India and China reasoned that ill-health was actually an imbalance in the internal life forces and that to heal the person meant re-establishing the balance or harmony of theses internal forces.

This basic philosophy remains today as the main plank in the foundation of what is now called "alternative medicine" and many of the practices, techniques and products used in ancient times are still routinely used very successfully by "natural practioners of today.

So what happened?

Following the decline of the Roman Empire, a split developed beween the Western and Eastern medicines and this grew increasingly wider as a more scientific approach to medicine and medical research prevailed.

Consequently, natural remedies were increasingly looked down on and dismissed as "phoney" before many were actually rejected and even banned. Eastern cultures however, continued to use and refine their traditional medicines and therapies.

Eventually a more enlightened view of natural medicines developed particularly when we became aware of the side effects and adverse long-term consequences that some drugs produced.

and so today ...

The phenominal surge in the need for products and potions that will "create a beautiful image and ensure a fit and healthy body so that we can live for ever", has been tempered by the realisation that we must take personal responsibility for our health.

We are constantly urged follow a healthy diet, control our weight, exercise regularly, stop smoking and avoid or limit our alcohol intake if we are to prevent heart attacks, strokes and even avoid the development of cancers.

Conventional medicine is now accepting and for some illnesses, advocating the use of traditional and "alternative" therapies. So it is ironic, that while natural remedies have been dismissed for so long, many of the medicines used today are actually based on naturally occurring products, many of which have been used for centuries to cure illness.

We also hear the word balance used more and more, when advice is given on how we should live our lives. Balance is fundamental in natural medicine and treatment and always has been.

Furthermore, our health problems are usually caused by a number of factors. Where prescribed medication usually treats the symptoms of an illness, "alternative" medicine would consider all the factors involved in causing the problem and treat the problem as a whole i.e. an holistic approach.
