12 Tips for Healthy Skin - Introduction

Despite what popular advertising would have us believe, your skin care regimen should not be about looking beautiful, but rather about having healthy skin. Natural Skin Products go hand in hand with a healthy skin care regimen. When the skin is healthy, natural skin products will help maintain and enhance the health (and therefore the beauty) of the skin. When there is a problem with the skin, using natural skin products can help repair the skin and prevent further irritation.

We will discuss 12 easy and natural skin care tips that can serve as the foundation for achieving or maintaining healthy skin.

Tip #1. Know your skin type

Not every skin care product is effective for every type of skin...

When selecting skin care products, take a few moments to verify that they were designed with your skin type in mind. For the sake of simplicity I will only briefly describe each type.

Normal Skin:
Normal Skin is firm and taut, but not tight. There are few--if any--acne breakouts, blemishes, or blackheads. There is neither oily residue nor flaking on normal skin. There may be a "glow" to the skin, but there is no "shine."

Your normal skin needs just as much care and kindness as the other skin types. Be sure to use gentle cleansers, use an appropriate moisturizer, and protect your skin from the environment.

Dry Skin:
Dry skin can feel tight and look drawn. This type of skin is subject to showing signs of aging more readily (due to lack of protective oils), and is prone to sunburn.

Dry skin should be protected from sun and wind, should be moisturized, and should be washed with very mild cleansers only.

Oily Skin:
Oily Skin is noticeably shiny. Pores are larger/more visible than other skin types. Oily skin is more prone to acne breakouts, blemishes, and blackheads.

Tame breakouts with cleansers designed to fight acne-causing bacteria and follow up with a toner to help minimize pores. There are many products available for fighting blackheads and blemishes. Start with the milder products. Finally, don't neglect to moisturize your oily skin!

Combination Skin:
Combination skin refers to having certain areas of the face that fall into one skin type while the rest of the face falls into another.

The greatest challenge here is the need for different products for different areas of the face. It will cost more to take care of the skin because you will be buying more products, and it will take more time to apply those products to specific areas.

It is possible to find products that are meant to be effective for all skin types. These may work on your combination skin and minimize the time and money you'll need to spend to keep your combination skin looking great.

What about Sensitive Skin?
Any skin type mentioned here can be sensitive skin, although it is most commonly associated with dry skin. If you have sensitive skin, it can become itchy, inflamed, rough, reddened, cracked and irritated in many other ways with little or no provocation. Discontinue the use of any over-the-counter skin care product that irritates your skin. If ANY prescription product causes skin irritation, be sure to contact the doctor who prescribed the medication and discuss the issue. (This advice pertains to ALL prescribed medications, not just those prescribed to treat skin conditions).

One Final Note about Skin Type
Skin type can change over time based on nutrition, age, stress level, environmental factors, and general health, so be sure to pay close attention to these things and manage them closely. And do take the time to re-evaluate your skin periodically and make any needed adjustments to your regimen.

Tip #2: Drink plenty of water.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but...

Many people overlook the importance that proper hydration has on the appearance and health of the skin.

This is not because drinking more water will cause your skin to be moister (probably won't). Drinking water is for your overall health. While skin problems can be be due to external factors, many times skin issues reflect poor health habits such as lack of sleep, poor diet, disease processes, hormonal changes etc.

Consuming water is part of a healthy lifestyle that will prevent overall dehydration, decrease inflammation, and help to flush toxins out of the body.

Bottom line: do drink plenty of clean, pure water every day. Your whole body will thank you for it.

If you are interested in learning more about the astonishing role that nutrition and hydration play in the appearance and health of the skin, I recommend reading the following book. I have kept it handy on my bookshelf since 2003.

The Perricone Prescription

Noted dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone revolutionized skin care with his 28-day program of exercise and nutrition designed to prevent and reverse the signs of aging, and provide an alternative to cosmetic surgery. While he subsequently wrote a number of other ground-breaking books and developed a line of natural skin care products, the focus of "The Perricone Prescription" is on achieving healthier skin through adopting healthier behavior.

Tip #3: Cleanse your skin regularly.

At least once per day, preferably twice. This is particularly important for those prone to acne. Regularly cleaning the face helps eliminate the bacteria that causes acne. Cleansing also helps maintain a youthful appearance by removing dead cells that have accumulated.

What should you use to cleanse your skin?
Plain old water will remove as much as 65% of the "dirt" on your face, but who wants a face that's only 65% clean, at best?

There are a lot of good facial cleansers on the market, at various price points. We don't necessarily subscribe to the notion that costlier is better, but when it comes to nourishing the body (inside and out), we do recommend you buy the highest quality you can afford. Quality products require you to use less product to achieve a result.

Tip #4: Speaking of Cleansing...

Make it Gentle, Effective, Soap-Free

The three main ingredients of a cleanser are oil, water and surfactants (wetting agents). Oil and surfactants extract dirt and oil from your skin, and water then flushes it out - thus making your skin clean. You may need to try several cleansers before you find the one that best suits your skin.

Other things to keep in mind:

  1. Always use soap-free cleansers. Soap will dry out your skin and cause irritation.

  2. Use only lukewarm water for cleansing (hot and cold water, both, cause damage to your skin)

  3. Finally, take care that you don't over-cleanse your skin and end up damaging your skin in the process.

Tip #5: And speaking of damage...

Be Gentle!!

Don't scrub or exfoliate too hard or too often. Skip the harsh chemical peels. Similarly, don't apply too much or too many skin care products, and follow all product directions carefully.

Tip #6: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

Don't let your skin become dry. Dryness causes a rough and unattractive appearance. Bear in mind that most moisturizers work best when applied to the skin while it is still slightly damp. And yes, even oily skin needs moisturizers.

Tip #7: Avoid using bath soap on your face.

Short & Sweet: Use products designed specifically for the face, and reserve soap for the areas below the neck.

Tip #8: Use sunscreen or sunblock to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.

Many day-time moisturizers have sunscreen built into them. Sun protection should be used even on cloudy days.

Remember that exposure to the sun's damaging rays is cumulative. That means that sun damage prevention should be started when we are babies. It also means that each exposure reduces our tolerance to the damage

Tip #9: Two words: "Exercise" and "Sleep" --

Be sure to get enough of both...

...not just for skin care but for overall health. Exercise improves circulation, and the circulating blood is what carries oxygen throughout the body. Sleep is when the body works to repair damage and replenish strength. Lack of sleep leaves tell-tale signs on the skin, such as puffiness in the face and dark circles below the eyes.

Tip #10: Treat skin issues as they arise

And with great care.

Attend to burns, bites, blisters, cuts, and bruises. Be especially vigilant regarding warts, moles, and lesions. Always consult a dermatologist or your medical doctor if a skin issue lasts more than a few days.

Tip #11: Avoid stress.

Chronic stress produces chemicals which cause harm to the body and the skin is part of the body, so yes, stress harms the skin. In keeping with Tip 9, increasing exercise and getting more sleep will help combat stress.

Tip #12: Eat right.

Just like the rest of the body, the skin needs proper nourishment in order to thrive.

Follow the tips given above and you can keep your skin healthy and beautiful for years to come.
