Natural Treatment for Hypoglycemia

Ranked #22,306 in Healthy Living, #324,699 overall

I struggled with hypoglycemia for years

The doctors always told me that I needed to cut fats and sugars out of my diet and they told me to monitor my blood sugar levels. I tried everything and yet it seemed that under stress I still had bouts of low blood sugar. My symptoms were often dizziness, feeling weak, headaches, sweating, and shaking.

The usual tips and diets were not working for me. It was not until I started changing my diet and habits for other reasons did I finally see relief from the plague that was hypoglycemia. I would love to share my success with you in this lens- including the changes that I made that ultimately gave me freedom from the weakness and shakes.

What is Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is the name used for a condition, not a disease. It could be a precursor to diabetes or other health problems. Hypoglycemia is essentially having abnormally low blood sugar levels which can have several effects on the body.

People with hypoglycemia are often tired and groggy, or they have bursts of energy followed by extreme exhaustion and weakness. Often I would feel hungry more often and if I didn't eat right away my body would start to feel weak and I would get dizzy.

Changing Food Worldviews

One of the biggest steps I took towards ridding myself of hypoglycemia was done for other reasons. Through our efforts to save money and still eat healthy, my family began to research ways in which we could start eating whole, real food again. Processed sugars, carbs, and meats had become staples in our diet and I knew they were not the greatest source of nutrition.

When we began to make our own food rather than buy prepackaged process versions, we discovered a number of health benefits. I noticed a huge difference in my blood sugars when I began to use real whole cream and raw sugar in my coffee in the mornings. The fat in the cream and the raw sugar took longer to process in my body, and therefore it maintained by sugar levels longer. When we switched back to whole non-homogenized milk and butter it made even more of a difference.

If you are thinking I am insane for adding more fat to our diet, then you too have been duped by the "health experts" into thinking that fat is bad for our bodies. Real fat- not trans-Frankenstein fat is natural and good for us.

The same goes for raw sugar. ABC recently rolled out an expert piece in which they boffed at the difference between high-fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, and raw sugar. Although it is true that these forms of sugar are nutritionally equal (they have roughly the same caloric and vitamin content), they are miles away in chemical and biological make-up.

Vitamins for excellent sugar levels

Vitamins

Along with changing my diet and the way I viewed food, I also started supplementing with certain vitamins that are beneficial to blood sugar processes. Magnesium, niacin, and chromium are the big ones that you should be getting everyday through your healthy diet. If you need to supplement these you can try liquid vitamins or a multivitamin. I also take cinnamon, garlic, and fish oils to help keep my metabolism and blood sugars regulated.

Other than vitamins, supplemental herbs can be a great addition to the diet. I drink mint and green tea often to help my metabolism and stomach. Garlic, onion, and ginger are all great for blood sugar levels.

Regular exercise

Another way I have been able to control my blood sugar levels is through exercise. I stay home with my 3 children and so trips to the gym are not feasible for me. I have learned to incorporate exercise into our daily lives through activities such as gardening, walking, and housework.

I know that not everything in my life is the healthiest I want it to be yet, but I am please with my progress. Working in the garden has given me a love for organic veggies and my kids love to eat fresh zucchini and tomatoes from our pickings. Walking has taught us a lot about transportation without a vehicle. We try to walk to places that are close to us rather than drive and waste gas and precious time working out our bodies.

For the most part, hypoglycemia has disappeared from the list of issues in my life. I no longer have to worry about whether I've eaten frequently enough or had too much sugar. The lifestyle and diet changes we have made to better our family has been a definite step in the right direction.

Thank-you, this is great to hear. Processed sugar can't be digested as it's missing the enzymes for that (processed out). I am glucose intolerant, so on the same band wagon for healthier eating :)
