Natural vs. synthetic medicine

Natural vs. synthetic medicine, what's better?

We all know that modern medicine has made incredible advances in the treatment of many diseases, especially those caused by viruses and bacteria. Many diseases have been wiped out, many others became harmless. Today we can take a pill for about any minor discomfort, like headaches or nausea. Yet every synthetic drug has its side effects, that's why many people prefer natural medicine to pills. But which actually is better? Here I'll try to describe both methods, their advantages and drawbacks. Keep in mind that the best method is still using both, especially against serious illnesses, where modern medicine should be your fist choice.

Natural medicine

natural medicineNatural medicine has been an effective treatment since the ancient times. Nature provides a wide variety of plants that contain medicinal properties. The powerful ingredients found in the stems, leaves, roots, flowers, and seeds of certain plants have natural healing properties that have been found to cure various health problems. Just a few examples are magnesium for restless leg syndrome, D-mannose for bladder infection, melatonin for jet lag, valerian for muscle tension or lemon balm for sleep.
For smaller health issues natural medicine is highly suggested, because it almost never has any side effects, is safer to use and ncan also be cheaper. At least for people with their own garden or at least some flower pots. Many herbs can easily be grown in normal flower pots on the window shelf. A quick cup of green tea for example can help you with sleeping disorders just as good as any sleeping pill. Althrough it contains caffeine, some other chemicals of green tea have a positive impact on the sleeping cycle.
But there are some dissadvantages of herbal medicine. First of all, it takes time to act. Aspirin acts much more quicker against headache than ginko biloba.
Also, you can't be sure if natural medicine will help or not. If you get a serious or sudden injury or disease, it's still best to use modern medicine.

Synthetic medicines

Synthetic drugsSynthetic drugs are much younger than their natural equivalent. We started using synthetic medicine about a century ago. And its not a coincidence that the average human lifespan started to go up about the same time. Synthetic drugs act faster and are more effective in some cases. Doctors prescribe synthetic drugs mostly because they know its effective. And quite often synthetic medicine is the only way of getting better. But they have many drawbacks. They can have some serious side effects. I for myself have seen drugs, that can help you with one issue, but cause much more other problems on the side. You take a pill against alergies and end up sleeping the day through. You take something against nausea and get a headache instead.
Synthetic medicine acts quick and against any serious disease I would suggest using the drugs your doctor prescribes you, but against any minor discomfort you should think twice. Are the side effects really worth it?

some natural alternatives

alternative medicineAs I already said, there are many alternative ways to cure some of the most common discomforts.
Nausea for example. In most cases dizzines can be eliminated if you settle your stomach. To do that just take ½ glass of ginger tea with honey. Or chew a few basil leaves, or 1-2 cardamom seeds.

Maybe you can't get to sleep easily. Insomnia can be treated by drinking onion juice. Or, if you don't like onions, mix 1 cup celery juice with 1 tablespoon honey and take it at bedtime. The easiest and most effective way is still a cup of chamomile tea at bedtime. You see, our grandmas did know what they were talking about.

Even for teeth whitening there is a natural alternative. Mix powdered and dried bay leaves and orange peel and rub on the teeth. Or brush your teeth with 1 drop clove oil added to the toothbrush.

If you want to quit smoking and you get the desire to smoke, take immediately pure lemon juice without fail.
Or chew 1 - 2 small pieces of dried pineapples mixed with ½ teaspoon honey whenever there's a desire to smoke.

I am all about taking natural alternatives to synthetic medications. I went into Anaphylactic shock by taking an over the counter medicine for pain and almost died. Since then, I take natural medication every chance I can.

This is a great lens. Thank yo for the clove oil trick! I'm a big fan of natural medicines and like your recap of the pros and cons for both.

synthetic medicine

SAPearl says:

I feel I should stick up for synthetic medicine, since nobody else has. I am a supporter of both natural and synthetic medicines, but where serious illnesses are involved, I take prescribed medicines every time. For more minor ailments I am happy to take herbal medicines if they help, but it's not wise to write off pharmaceuticals purely on the basis of them being synthetic and chemical-based. They save lives, and without them we would all be dying of diseases that have now been pretty much eradicated.

Nice information. Don't foget that the strength of active ingredients is standardized and regulated with synthetic medications, something which is not yet true of natural remedies.

Great lens! I know modern science has a lot to give, but so do the remedies of old. I take a mixture of natural things and synthetic drugs that haven't been replicated in nature.
