Natural Way's To Get Rid Of Cat Fleas
My cat, Crybaby, started foaming at the mouth after giving him a standard topical flea treatment (Frontline). I vowed that I would never again give any of my cats chemicals to treat anything, not even fleas.
Fleas are extremely difficult to get rid of once they descend on your cat. The best thing is to do everything within your power to keep from attracting fleas in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, chemicals such as Frontline and Advantages are not the best flea treatments for cats. The best flea treatments for cats are all natural flea treatments! In addition to helping you treat flea infestations naturally, I will also provide you with some information on how to prevent fleas. Believe it or not, there are many various ways to accomplish this through the use of safe natural products and home remedies. When you see just how much money you will save in addition to safely keeping fleas away from your cat by opting for natural product or home remedy, you will be amazed that you never knew about these things before now. Going natural is not only a cheap flea treatment but it is an extremely safe and effective method.
Once you see how much safer natural remedies are for your cat, you'll never use chemicals again.

Natural Flea Prevention
Getting rid of fleas is not an easy task. It requires time, determination and a lot of hard work to rid your pets and house of fleas. The best way to get rid of fleas is to prevent them from invading your pets and your home. Flea prevention is easier, cheaper and safer than trying to get rid of a flea infestation. The best way to prevent fleas naturally is to keep your cat indoors. You can use DE and borax as all natural flea prevention methods.
Flea chemical treatments contain pyrethroid-based products, organophosphate insecticides, carbamtes, and permethrin all of which are classified by the EPA (Enviromental Protection Agency) as being carcinogenic to humans and pets.
A warning against using chemical flea treatments
Usng Chemical flea treatments to get rid of fleas can be deadly for you, your pets and your children.
First Steps....
Before you start to treat the flea infestation to get rid of fleas there are some first steps that will make your battle against fleas much easier.1. Bathe your cat with Dawn dish detergent or a natural flea shampoo product (my favorite home remedy for fleas). If your cat is under 12 weeks old, do not use anything but Dawn (original Dawn, it's blue!) to bathe your kitten. If your cat is older than 12 weeks old, use Dawn or a natural herbal flea shampoo. Read the ingredients! If there is a word you don't recognize or can't pronounce, most likely it's not all natural. I recommend herbal shampoo's that contain a combination of any of pine cedar, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, citronella, juniper or geranium.
2. Wash all bedding in hot water. Make sure to dry bedding using high heat to ensure that all the fleas are dead.
3. Vacuum thoroughly. Make sure to vacuum every little crevice. To make your vacuuming more efficient sprinkle down borax, salt, or Diatomaceous earth (make sure it is food grade). Let it stand for about an hour, and then vacuum it up. You will want to vacuum at least twice a day while combating fleas. This includes vacuuming your furniture!
4. Wash all hardware floors with a citrus oil or vinegar. I prefer to use a steam mop. After I use the steam mop, I mist the floor with homemade citrus oil or vinegar. The steam mop is hot enough to kill fleas and eggs. The citrus oil repels them, meaning prevents them from coming back. Do this at least once every two days while combating cat fleas.
5. No matter what method you use for treating fleas, natural or not. You will want to invest in a flea comb. I take a container of hot soapy water and a paper towel. I sit down with my cat, take my time and comb through her fur. After each pass of the comb, I dip the flea comb in the container and swish it around. Any fleas on the comb, will fall into the container and drown. Then I wipe the combwith a paper towel to make sure that all the eggs are off the comb. Make sure as soon as you are done take the paper towel and put it in the trash outside. Do not just put it in your kitchen trash.

How to make citrus oil at home
A wonderful home remedy for fleas!
Chop orange, grapefruit or other citrus skins and cut them into small pieces. Then place them in a pan of water. Simmer for 15 minutes. After simmering, cool thoroughly. Once its cool, you can even sponge this mixature on your cat's fur to soothe their skin and repel fleas. This is a great herbal way to keep the fleas at bay. Dawn Hand Renewal with Olay
I just love Dawn Hand Renewal with Olay. First off all, Dawn is the best thing that you can use on your cats for getting rid of fleas. Dawn is the cheapest flea treatment. It kills the fleas quickly and keeps them off for at least 24 hours. It's also safe for kittens, even newborns. Dawn with Olay is even better because the Olay soothes and moisturizes your cats skin helping them to heal quicker. How to make your cat feel comfortable while being attacked by fleas.
1) Giving your cat a lemon sponge bath will help soothe their skin. Cut up some fresh lemons (skin and all)and seep them into boiling water. Allow the mixture to sit overnight. Strain and then using a sponge rub the liquid gently over your cat.
2) Give your bath a cat every other day. This will help to remove any fleas that are on your cat, and will keep the fleas off your cat for a few hours.
3) Use an all-natural flea relief spray. Not only will it provide your cat with some much needed comfort and relief but it will also help to get rid of fleas on your cat. The fleas don't like the all natural products in the spray and will jump off your cat. Keep in mind, that they will still be in your house, so you will still need to use a natural flea treatment method to treat your house.
4) Groom your cat often. Grooming will improve circulation, which promotes faster healing of flea bites. Grooming, will also allow you to see the current progress of getting rid of the fleas. Another big bonus is that the extra attention will make your cat feel loved, happy, and relaxed.

What do you think?
Do you think natural or chemical is the way to go to get rid of fleas?

100% natural, it's safer for me and my pets

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

Moonbeam973 says:
When I found fleas on my 15-yr.-old Maine Coon, I treated her with Advantage or Frontline (it's been several years, my memory is a bit hazy). She had just had a vet checkup and was declared in excellent health. But, shortly after starting the flea treatment, she died. All the vet could tell me was that it was neurological. The loss was devastating, and it was made even worse by the knowledge that I may have been responsible simply because I didn't know any better and didn't bother to do any research.
Chemicals, it gets the job done quickly and my pets get tortured less
Ann says:
I think chemicals would do the job faster.
LampsPest says:
I am a little biased here since I own a pest control company, but I have been to many home which have done the natural approach and many homes which have done the chemical approach but still have fleas in their home. I really believe it is all in the preparation of the treatment zone that makes the big difference in either approach.
gottaloveit says:
I'm a fan of chemical treatments as I have 6 dogs - it would take me forever to do a natural flea treatment on them!
TNTbefree says:
I live in flea heaven and my dogs and cats get covered in fleas. I tried all the natural stuff, and it worked a little bit. But my hat is off to the chemical companies for getting the job done.
cougarsearch says:
It depends on how bad the flea infestation is. If its really bad that its killing my pets give me the chemicals!
Brewer's Yeast
Amazon Price: $4.99
Brewers yeast will keep fleas off your pets. Brewers yeast also has nutritional benefits for adults.
Flea Traps
1) Flea traps are devices that contain a sticky pad, which usually has a special odor attracting scent and a light. Both the scent and the light attract the fleas. The fleas, then get stuck on the sticky pad and die.
2) If you don't want to shell out the $10 for a commercial flea trap, you can make your own! At night put a plate of soapy water on the floor with a desk light right above it. The light will attract the fleas and the fleas will jump on to the plate. They will become trapped in the suds of soap and will drown. Keep in mind that a homemade flea trap does not work nearly as well but it will do the trick in a pinch.
3) You can also buy strips of sticky tape. You lay them down on your floor, the fleas jump on the tape, and get stuck. I'm not a fan of this method, because the amount of fleas it catches is not worth the hassle.
4)Flea Zapper comb. There is this little flea comb that electrocutes the fleas killing them. It does not electrocute or hurt your cat. I wouldn't recommend using it if your cat was wet though. Fleas can kill your animals. I love getting revenge on fleas. I much prefer to comb them out using a regular comb and then kill them by hand or watch them drown.
Amazon Price: $15.57
Safe to use around children and pets. Fleas get attracted to the light and get trapped on the sticky pad. I have personally use the Victor flea trap. It is a miracle worker!
Amazon Price: Now just $33.70! Originally $79!
This is a chemical free electronic trap. It catches 500% more fleas than other traps! It attracts all fleas within a 40 foot range.
Amazon Price: $29.89
Kills all fleas on contact! You don't have to worry about fleas jumping off the comb or escaping.
Have you tried getting rid of fleas naturally?
Borax
Remove all animals from the room. Sprinkle down the borax. Take a broom and rub it into the carpet. Most people recommend that you wait just one hour. However, the longer it sits the more effective it is. I strongly recommend letting it sit for 24 to 48 hours. You will also want to treat all fabric furniture with Borax. Then, vacuum it up after it sits. This will kill all fleas, eggs, and keep them from coming back for up to a month.
Amazon Price: $10.18
Yes, the description says that it is for laundry but it is 100% pure borax. This is the same exact stuff that companies sell for pets. It's just a lot cheaper!
Amazon Price: $30.25 with Free Shipping!
FleaBusters RX is the same exact stuff as the 20 Mule borax above. It's just more expensive because its marketed toward pet owners and has a fancy name.
Diatomaceous Earth
Amazon Price: $23.00
Kills all bugs including fleas! Do NOT put DE directly on your pet. Use it on the floors.
Amazon Price: $4.99
Natural Flea Control With Diatomaceous Earth: Kill Fleas Now was recommended by one of my readers. Natural Flea Control With Diatomaceous Earth: Kill Fleas Now will teach you everything you need to know to properly use Diatomaceous Earth as a flea killer and flea preventative. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to use Diatomaceous Earth.
Facts about fleas...
Most of the fleas in your home are living in your furniture and on your floors, rather than on your pet. Flea's only spend about 10% of their time on your pet. In fact, they only jump on your pet, when they need to feed. This is why it's so important that you don't just treat your cat, but your whole house.
Every flea found on your pet means that there are approximately 30 more fleas living in your home.
A hibernating flea cocoon can survive up to year without feeding. This is why it is so important to stay on top of flea control and flea prevention methods even when you no longer see fleas.
Did you know that a flea can jump 100 times its own height? Did you also know that just one female flea will produce 20,000 eggs in a period of only three months? Did you know that it can take anywhere from three to six weeks for flea eggs to hatch? So you may think that the fleas are all gone, but 3 weeks later, here comes a whole new generation. This is why it's so important to keep treating your home for fleas for 3 months after all traces of them are gone.
The female flea prefers to lay her eggs in dark, damp places such as cracks in the floor or a corner of the basement. (Most of the few eggs that are laid on host animals soon fall off).
Did you know that there are many different types of fleas? The most common fleas found on cats and dogs are cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis). There are thousands of different flea species in the world.
Be careful of natural products that are really toxic to your cat...
People used to believe that giving raw garlic to a cat was an amazing way to get rid of fleas. While this is true with dogs, garlic is very dangerous for cats. We now know that garlic can lead to death and anemia in cats.
Don't just treat your cat and your house!
Amazon Price: $9.55

Vet's Best Natural Flea + Tick Yard and Kennel Spray is a super concentrated spray that will last you a few flea seasons. Do not use Siphotrol!
I still recommend the breakaway collar below, but please use common sense when using it. Don't use it as a flea prevention. Only use it to get rid of fleas. Never use it for longer than 30 days at a time! This breakaway collar is the only chemical product I recommend.
Amazon Price: $5.48
Safer than all other chemical flea products. Breakaway collar ensures that your cat won't get caught on something.

- Once my little Bill (I don't wanna call him a cat) got attacked by fleas and it took a lot hard working to get rid of it. I bought diatomaceous earth, sprinkled them in the yard, washed carpets in a regular basis and also used special combs to catch up fleas, it took long but worked properly.

- My dog had terrible neurologic reaction when a flea medicine was given by a well meaning groomer (without my consent). You may wish to share this book about diatomaceous earth for non-toxic flea control. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Control-Diatomaceous-Earth-ebook/dp/B00852Q0QI/ This book contains lots of information on the life cycle of the flea and how to use that knowledge to prevent infestations.
