Along the Himalayas Nepal, Bhutan and India

Along the Himalayas Nepal, Bhutan and India, many ethnic voices have lived along the high mountains for centuries. Cashmere goat often is a means of economic survival for such tribals providing wool, milk and sometimes meat also.

But the wool for cashmere goats are weaved, sometimes by traditional cottage industry to provide economic livelihood for some tribal people as well as others in the small towns and villages along the Himalayas.

This special project pre-proposal involves raising Llama, Alpaca/Cashmere Goats primarily for wool for mountain people in Peru and India.

Raising such ruminants is already a practice that can be strengthened via community based cooperative model for connecting such animals,tribals, with wool fibers to suitable market places.

    Nice lens. This brings back memories of time I spent in Nepal. The colors are so vibrant and in stark contrast to the harsh environment. Some of these photos make me want to travel to Peru and Bolivia too! Need to find a musical reason to go there. I'm sure that won't be hard.

cashmere goat is any breed of goat that produces cashmere wool, the goat's fine soft downy winter undercoat, in commercial quality and quantity.

This undercoat grows as the day length shortens and is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair, which is present all the year and is called guard hair. Most common goat breeds, including dairy goats, grow this two coated fleece.

Auctions are held where the wool is sold to buyers such as textile mills and merchants who arranges to blend the wool for higher value to be sold at auctions at major centers in the world where buyers and sellers meet.

According to the 2001 census in Nepal, Dhimal population was 19,537. In India, the 2001 census reports Dhimal as one of the smallest community in the country, totaling a number of approximately 981 people .

Dhimals continue to speak their native Dhimal language. In Nepal they live in 24 villages of Mechi zone in Jhapa District and 51 villages in Koshi zone, Morang District.2 In India, they reside in 16 villages, namely Naxalbari and Hatighisha in Darjeeling district, West Bengal.

The most attractive element of the wool from Llama/Alpaca/Cashmere Goat is when blended with certain sheep wool, or another high value wool animal, the respective "blend fiber" can be an attractive "feedstock" for the wool handling textile mills located in India, Europe and USA.

Such a project is a win-win partnership that strengthens the cultures of the ethnic voices where the ruminants are already a means often under struggling conditions otherwise.
