Homemade Natural Insecticides

Kill the Bugs Without Killing your Dog

Homemade Natural Insecticides - Kill the Bugs Without Killing your Dog Author: Timothy Croy

Let's face it. Bugs are everywhere. It doesn't matter how many times you spray your lawn or garden with insecticides, they always come back. Having pets or little children doesn't make the process any easier either. Did you know that 90% of Americans pour nearly 300 million pounds of pesticides on their lawn, each year? The truth is, most of these pesticides are insoluble, which means they stick around for a very long time. This is not good for any wandering pet or child.

The pesticides we use today, usually come in the form of balls, crystals, granules, foggers or sprays. These products make up nearly 35,000 pesticides in the market's circulation, and they are responsible for the majority of human household poisonings in the U.S. Most insecticides are lethal enough to disrupt an animal's biological process, such as feminizing male animals and disrupting their ability to reproduce.

Contrary to what the labels will tell you, our pets are not immune to insect sprays. It is a common occurence for our cat or dog to either ingest insecticides indirectly by contaminated food, or to come into contact with it directly. Chemicals in pesticides are fat soluble which makes it easy for them to pass into our internal organs, such as the liver. Over time, these chemicals can cause severe problems with the nerves, hormones, and the immune system.

Ok, so insecticides aren't exactly good for anything living. They aren't supposed to be. Insecticides aren't picky, and won't give your insects, dogs, or children mercy when they come into contact with it. Do you want your kids playing in your yard after you've sprayed for spiders and ticks? Do you want your dog sniffing that bush you just sprayed for mites?

Fortunately, there are safe alternatives that are not only cheaper than the common store bought insecticide, but many of them can be made in our homes in the form of mixtures, teas, and harmless sprays. These non-toxic alternatives can be quite effective at killing bugs and insects without harming our pets and children.

Make your own natural fertilizers and pesticides

Make your own natural fertilizers and pesticides Author: Richard Leddy

Summer is finally here, time to enjoy the garden, relaxing while the kids and pets run around the yard. Till its time to do some actual yard work of course. I was planning to fertilize the lawn this weekend and do something about those aphids on the roses so went to my local superstore. As always they had a wide range at the best prices. But everything had warnings on it, even something as simple as potting soil warned to use gloves when handling. When did gardening become so dangerous?

There must be greener alternatives and really green ones not just an admans idea of what sounds green. So rather than waste any more time at the garden center I ventured forth on the net.

I want something that

  • will keep my children and pets safe from harmful chemicals

  • Can be easily made up and replenished with natural ingredients

  • Helps produce naturally bountiful fruit and vegetables

  • A lush lawn that is the envy of my neighbors

Of course there is no one miracle recipe that does it all but there are a lot of recipes for natural fertilizers and insecticides out there. I even discovered genuine organic products ranging from fertilizer ( for those of you who do nt want to mix your own) to beneficial nematodes, a natural way to rid your garden of pests.

A few simple fertilizer recipes

Coffee : Use leftover coffee to water the plants. However make sure to dilute it before using it. You can make use of this ratio one part of coffee to 4 parts of water. You can use the solution once every other week. Do not do it frequently.

Coffee grounds : line a metal tray with newspapers and spread used coffee grounds evenly on the paper not more than ΒΌ inch. After the grounds are dry, put them directly on the soil around the plants

Eggshells : provide a rich source of potassium and calcium. Make powdered eggshell fertilizer by drying out empty eggshells. Put five crushed eggshells into the soil around every plant. It is the best fertilizer for outdoor flowers, fruits, and vegetables. You can even store the liquid eggshells for the plants. To make liquid eggshell fertilizer, boil 20 eggshells in a gallon of water. Allow them to steep for 8 hours before removing the shells. Store it in a covered container and use it just once a week. A solution of 1 tbs of apple vinegar and 1 gallon of water (especially alkaline tap water) will help houseplants to become lush green.

Simple Safe insecticide

Soak in water the following: Lemon peels and/or Orange peels, Mint leaves and/or sage leaves Lavender leaves

If you can soak them overnight and in the morning you'll have a strong "tea." Strain this and use half of this mixture and add witch hazel to make up the other half and put in a spray bottle. Simply lightly spray yourself down with this mixture and shall be good to go in the evening. This natural insecticide can also be used on the kids and the dog too. Do not use on your cats though

How to Control Fleas, Ticks, Ants, and Other Insects - Naturally

How to Control Fleas, Ticks, Ants, and Other Insects - Naturally!Author: A. Caleb Hartley

Ever wonder how to control insects without using toxic, chemically-based insecticides? Has it ever occurred to you that there is a very valid reason that you should vacate a house when you spray Raid or "bomb" the place to get rid of the pests? Do you really think that the residue is completely gone once you return?

Enter Diatomaceous Earth. Sounds like dirt or dust, but in actuality it is a fossil (another name for it is "Fossil Shell Flour"). It's made up of microscopic little shells of diatoms, a one-celled type of algae. These fossilized shells have tiny little points, which puncture an insect's exoskeleton and dry them up, killing them. In this way, Diatomaceous Earth is a mechanical insecticide, not a chemical one. Because of this, insects cannot become immune or resistant to Diatomaceous Earth. On the downside, Diatomaceous Earth will kill all insects - even good ones - so it should be used carefully!

Diatomaceous Earth has little to no health effects to humans or pets as long as it has not been treated for use in such things as swimming pools - look for "Amorphous Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth" and a "silica-content" of less than 1.5% to ensure that it is safe to use on pets or around people or farm animals.

In fact, Diatomaceous Earth is used in some livestock feed to kill any bugs that might eat or ruin the feed before it can be fed to the animals. Diatomaceous Earth is so safe, the livestock just eats it with the food! It actually can kill worms or parasites that live inside animals as well as the pests that bother them on the outside.

Try Diatomaceous Earth next time you have a little bit of a bug problem instead of using chemical sprays and other toxic products. You (and the Earth) will be glad you did!

How to Keep Pests Out of Your Garden- Naturally

How to Keep Pests Out of Your Garden- Naturally!Author: Christy Pinheiro, EA

Everyone is always looking for a natural way to keep pests and animals out of their garden. There are some wonderful natural pest and animal deterrents that are available right in your kitchen, and they are all safe for children and food gardens.

1. Kitty-B-Gone- To keep cats out of the vegetable garden, you can use a combination of different natural substances. Cats abhor the smell of citrus and black pepper oil. Next time you eat an orange or a grapefruit, peel the rinds and toss them around in your vegetable garden. Sprinkling a large amount of black pepper also works well, although it can get expensive. Black pepper works best in areas that will not be getting a lot of water. You can also use black pepper underneath the porch or other spots in order to prevent a "litter box" area. Chili flakes work well, also, but are probably not a good idea if you have small children.

You can also try planting the Coleus-Canina plant, a weed originating in Europe. It is also known as the "Scardy-Cat" plant because it emits an odor that felines hate. You can request this plant at your local nursery and plant it around any garden that you want cats to stay out of!

2. Natural Aphid Killer- Did you know that you can kill aphids on roses and other plants simply by spraying them with a diluted solution made with household dish soap and tepid water? It's true! Just put a small amount of dish soap in a squirt bottle with some water and spray away! The aphids die instantly and the plants are usually just fine. This method is so much safer than using pesticides, especially with food plants.

Investing in some ladybugs is also a great way to kill aphids. Ladybugs have a voracious appetite for aphids and other soft-bodied pests. They can help your garden become pest and insecticide-free.

3. Seaweed Mulch- Mulch made from seaweed is good for the soil and also deters pests. Seaweed mulch contains loads of vitamins and promotes healthy plant growth. An added bonus is that it deters slugs and snails.

There is lots of valuable information on the internet for gardeners that wish to plant and maintain gardens naturally. Your garden will become a more natural and balanced place for the healthy production of vegetables and flowers. Attracting and promoting beneficial insects, mulching techniques, and little bit of research can help you have the organic garden of your dreams.
