Top Ten Reasons to Buy a CNG Vehicle

Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles are a great way to decrease your carbon footprint. Natural gas cars run off of natural gas that is used in our homes. There are a variety of models out there that are available for natural gas vehicles. Natural gas vehicles are more efficient than petroleum based cars. Natural gas is also produced locally in the United States which decreases the transport costs and emissions.

Natural Gas Vehicles are Clean

Reason # 1

Natural gas is a fossil fuel made up of mostly methane, making it one of the cleanest burning fuels there is.

Natural gas produces 30-40% less Greenhouse Gas Emissions. This is because Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) produce between 93-95% less toxins overall compared to gasoline and diesel vehicles.

If you converted just one refuse truck from diesel to natural gas it's like taking 325 cars off the road in terms of the pollution.

Natural Gas is American

Reason # 2

This is huge! 98% of Natural Gas is produced here in the United States as opposed to the 66% of crude oil purchased outside the U.S. I actually debated whether or not this should be the # 1 reason. It's so important that we break our dependence from crude oil.

Natural Gas is Abundant

Reason # 3

For the last 15 years the United States has added more natural gas to its reserves than it has produced and used.

Worldwide, natural gas reserves are greater than petroleum.

A U.S. Department of Energy study estimated that, worldwide, between 25 and 37 quadrillion Btu of methane is released each year into the atmosphere due to natural decomposition of organic material. In the U.S., the report states that it is feasible to capture and use about 1.25 quadrillion Btu produced from landfills, sewage and animal waste alone. This is equivalent to 6% of all the natural gas used in the U.S. That's a lot of gas!

Natural Gas is Affordable

Natural Gas $2.00/gal VS. Gasoline $3.19/gal

It costs around 60 cents per gge to refuel at home, but about $2 per gge if you factor in the cost of the electricity to run the home fueling station.

Natural gas has been 25-40% cheaper than Gasoline for 15 years.

Transit buses that use natural gas can expect an annual fuel cost savings of almost $20,000 when compared to conventional "clean diesel" buses and more than $11,500 when compared with diesel-electric hybrid buses"

Natural Gas Vehicles are Widely Used

Use of CNG Vehicles is widespread and growing, there are approximately 130,000 Natural Gas Vehicles on U.S. roads today and over 8.4 million worldwide.

Over 25 different auto manufacturers produce some form of Natural Gas Vehicle.

Natural Gas Cars are Cleanier than Hybrid Electric

Reason # 6

According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the Honda Civic GX (which is currently the only NGV passenger model being produced today) ranks higher than the Toyota Prius in their Greenest Vehicles of 2008. While the GX has a lower mpg rating than the the Prius, the GX releases less GHG emissions than the Prius - thereby making it the "greener" of the two. Thus, even though the GX uses more gallons of natural gas than the Prius uses in petroleum, natural gas burns cleaner.

Natural Gas Cars look better than Electric Cars

Reason # 7

Natural Gas cars look like normal cars not these little silly battery electric operated cars you see on the road today. Natural gas cars don't look any different from gasoline cars, they're just cleanlier.

Natural Gas Vehicles are Great for Fleets

Reason # 8

NGVs are used in a variety of fleets including: taxi and shuttle services, food beverage and other delivery businesses, trash and refuse companies, school bus fleets a wide variety of private and public work trucks such as sweepers, dump trucks and plows; and transit buses. One-in-five of all new transit buses on order nationwide now are natural gas-powered.

One of the benefits of owning a natural gas vehicle is that you can refuel at home. Using a wall mounted compressor you can quietly fill your car overnight in your own garage.

Tax Credits Help Offset Cost

The 2008 Civic GX costs $25,225, which is higher than a similar gasoline Civic. However, buyers can get as much as $7,000 back in federal and state incentives: a $4,000 tax credit from the federal government and a $3,000 rebate from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). As this is written, California owners are still eligible for HOV (high-occupancy-vehicle) stickers, allowing use of special freeway lanes.

Hey Leslie, this top ten list is fantastic. I currently have a Hybrid Civic which will hopefully tie us over until we need a new car, in which case I think a CNG car will be an excellent option.
