Only your medical practitioner can tell you that, and even they may have to take a look-see to be sure. Generally the symptoms are soreness in the anal area, especially after a bowel movement. Itching, leakage of mucosa (the liquid produced by the walls of the canal) and bleeding are the other symptoms.

You may find blood in the pan, on the paper after wiping, or find it in your underwear after being to the toilet. In severe cases, it may take a while to stop.

Bleeding from the rectum can also be a symptom of more serious problems such as colon cancer or bleeding polyps (which can then become cancerous). Your GP will either do a finger-probe to see if you have hemorrhoids inside the anal canal, or if he needs to take a look, you will be sent for a colonoscopy.
