How do I define Natural Learning?

Natural Learning is not just a way to educate your child, it's a lifestyle!

It's about facilitating and supporting your children to make their own life choices, follow their dreams develop their potentialities and enjoy this journey. It's a process of just being and discovering and creating and inspiring, sharing, enjoying and appreciating each other...

The control over what, when and how things are learned belongs to the individual child. Parents, siblings and others may provide a source of inspiration but ultimately the individual child makes their own assessments about themselves and the world around them.

Natural Learning goes hand in hand with a natural parenting style that is based on principles rather than rules. It's almost like an extension of attachment parenting and compassionate parenting techniques...
The ultimate aim of educating and parenting in this way is growing emotionally healthy adults with a high self esteem and a high regard for all manifestations of life.
Adults who;
* explore their passions
* maintain healthy relations with others
* are socially confident
* and act from a peaceful place in their hearts.

Adults who can make their own decisions without being swayed by bias information and possess the skills and resources to gain knowledge and pursue their goals.

In fact you could say the aim is to grow our children into happy adults without issues and counseling and conflict, perhaps even leaders who can bring about positive change in the world and maybe even peace...
Aim high, that's what they say!

"I make milk, what's your super power?"

Why Natural Learning Works For Us...

Because I love being close to my children, I nurtured them with my body and soul for years and now that they can walk and talk and use the toilet and feed themselves and make decisions on their own, the fun is just beginning - I wouldn't miss it for the world! I love natural learning because it nurtures creativity and self esteem. It's a beautiful process of growing in love and getting to know these special people that are your children! It's fun and it works and it's obligation FREE!

Here's a Hot Topic of Contention!

Have you heard of EC or 'sitting out or holding out"? Elimination Communication is a lifestyle choice to become more in tune with your baby's bowel movements from birth and thus reduce the need for nappies. Very environmentally friendly! It's based on developing early baby signs for bowel movements and training your child to poo and wee in a receptacle rather than in a nappy. Keeping your baby bottomless wherever possible also encourages better body awareness and much quicker toilet training!

What do you think of Elimination Communication?

Do you know when your baby needs to go?

Mothers develop awareness of their baby's need for food, warmth sleep and stimulation. EC is a natural process of responding to a baby's bowel movements.

Yep! I agree, if we all lived like this then there wouldn't be billions of nappies in landfill taking more than 500 years to decompose!

MagicMummy says:

It's harder to be a magic mummy than you think and for me it is more of an affirmation really, but all I know is that I am always willing to put myself in the shoes and think about what's best for them, laying myself on the line wherever possible. (Mainly because I project into the future when accusations of all kinds of shortcomings are bound to fly!) He he

Maybe, but I prefer to keep my baby's bottom covered, I feel it's safer and cleaner.

At Least 81 reasons to EC!

(adapted from contributions of the members of the YahooGroups EliminationCommunication group)

Here are some very good reasons why women choose elimination communication over nappy dependency. in general women find it is in line with attachment parenting, it is more healthy and better for the environment. In the long run it encourages your child to have better discipline and self control and quicker development. it's cheaper and more convenient and more enjoyable for everyone!
  1. Less irritation for child's skin by keeping urine and excrement off body, thereby reducing incidence of thrush or diaper rash.
  2. Keeps unnecessary chemicals off baby's skin.
  3. No need to catheterize a baby for urine sample.
  4. Supports positive views about bodily functions.
  5. Children learn how to urinate on cue (is not only convenient, but can prevent healthy problems due to holding urine or bowels).
  6. Parent can develop a better sense of your child's digestive system and therefore react to irritants or detect problems more quickly.
  7. May save baby boys from some infertility problems later.
  8. Reduces likelihood that baby will urinate or have a BM in the bath or in a swimming pool.
  9. Helps parents overcome any fears/qualms/phobias about bodily functions.
  10. Protects baby from germs in public restrooms.
  11. More sanitary than "swim-diapers," which don't prevent urine from getting into the pool (not to mention more comfortable for the baby).
  12. Encourages the development of a trusting relationship with children through communication about a basic human need.
  13. Provides more opportunities to hold one's baby.
  14. Another reason to carry your baby in a sling - sling-time increases parent/baby communication leading to "success" with EC.
  15. It is more comfortable to carry a baby not wrapped in a big nappy.
  16. Fosters greater security in a baby - "Mummy and Daddy listen to what I am saying and respond when I need to go."
  17. Protects against practices of "crying it out" - the crying child may have to pee.
  18. A great explanation of why a baby does not sleep through the night - she sleeps without diapers and wakes to go potty!
  19. Provides and additional positive response to a crying baby - see if the baby needs to go to the bathroom.
  20. Encourages the use of sign language for enhanced communication with baby.
  21. Provides additional support for "extended" breastfeeding - not weaning the baby early will NOT cause the baby to remain in diapers "forever." The baby will be completely "potty trained" long before weaning.
  22. Reduces the use of disposable diapers, a major contributor to landfill.
  23. Reduces the use of water and detergents used to wash cloth diapers.
  24. Reduces the use of disposable wipes used to clean baby's bottom.
  25. Does not support the manufacture of dioxins and other toxic chemicals used in the productions of diapers and diapering products.
  26. Reduces use of plastic bags used to individually wrap dirty disposable diapers.
  27. Getting peed on by an infant can be funny (the first few times at least!)
  28. Pottying is more fun than changing diapers
  29. Baby bottoms are only tiny for a short time; why cover up the cuteness?
  30. Impress and amaze other people when baby pees or poops in the potty.
  31. Teaches parents how to trust their intuitions (and practice ESP with baby!)
  32. As if we needed another reason to appreciate our babies...
  33. Keeps one humble (on the misses!!!)
  34. A diaperless baby turns the dullest shopping trip into an adventure in new territory.
  35. EC enhances one's creativity - many EC parents sew to make pants that fit without diapers or find the best restrooms in town.
  36. Creates fond memories of places where baby peed.
  37. After starting EC, it is very hard to find reasons not to do it.
  38. Meet great people on EC-mailing lists.
  39. The misses make funny stories (once you're done cleaning them up.
  40. It's fun to see the looks on people's faces when you say that your 18 month-old is still nursing but is also out of diapers!
  41. EC makes great material for silly nursery rhyme potty songs to sing while baby finishes his business.
  42. Provides more opportunities to play in the mirror in the bathroom.
  43. Babies have bladder and sphincter control from birth.
  44. Babies are able to communicate their needs from birth.
  45. An EC child will be more active earlier in pulling up and down his or her pants because of earlier involvement (versus being forced to lie passively on a changing table).
  46. Teaches you healthy skepticism about things "everybody knows," such as "babies have no control..."
  47. Babies gain more skills as they grow, so help them gain confidence by starting with what they know and can control.
  48. Gives baby a chance to show how smart she is and how well she can communicate.
  49. You know in advance when your baby is about to reach a new developmental milestone - increased "misses" often precedes a developmental change.
  50. It teaches older siblings about communicating with the baby.
  51. It helps older siblings develop healthy attitudes about bodily functions.
  52. A diaperless baby smells wonderful!
  53. Babies think it is fun!
  54. Wearing underwear is a lot more comfortable than disposables or a wet cloth diaper.
  55. Babies genitals are not out of reach for him, hidden under a fat diaper for the first formative years. Even when wearing pants he can explore his body much more freely.
  56. Watering trees outside is fun for baby.
  57. Baby doesn't have to be forced against his/her will to lie still while being changed.
  58. Disposable diapering can cost nearly $3000 for three years of diapering.
  59. Cloth diapering can cost $1000 for three years of diapering.
  60. Conventional toilet training starts with learning to "hold it" while EC starts with learning to "let go" - this can make a big difference on a baby's perception of elimination and and of life in general.
  61. Contrary to the promises in advertisements, diapers don't keep the baby clean and dry, but only his clothes and environment.
  62. Who would want to wear his toilet?
  63. Will not have to struggle with conventional potty training later.
  64. Less frustration for parent and child.
  65. Helping baby learn to use the bathroom in infancy avoids inconsistencies with discipline (i.e.: "No, Baby, you are NOT allowed in the bathroom...." then "Hey Toddler, you are REQUIRED to use the bathroom."
  66. People have been doing it for centuries.
  67. You will find out that your grandmother EC'd your mother or father before the "experts" told them what to do about toilet training.
  68. Fewer diapers to change.
  69. No more poopy diapers!
  70. It is faster to flush than to lay down, take off, wipe, put on, sit up, etc.
  71. It is faster to flush than to lay down, take off, wipe, put on, sit up, etc.
  72. Cuts down on washing.
  73. If you are (backup) cloth diapering and your washing machine dies on you, it's not much of a problem.
  74. You travel light with baby - no diapers to lug around.
  75. A baby without diapers fits on your hip much better.
  76. It's rather unlikely you'll have "two in diapers".
  77. How do you change a diaper in a NYC restaurant bathroom (teeny tiny) or an airplane restroom anyway?
  78. You don't need to worry about running out of supplies while traveling.
  79. You can take your baby anywhere.
  80. You don't have to find the super leak proof and absorbent diaper. If you are using diapers for backup, almost anything will do - it's just in case and won't have to hold much and not for long.
  81. You've got more room for baby's clothes as you do not need room for diapers.

Sometimes we do this instead of going to school!

And a little bit of this... (Yes, your children can be social without school!)

And this is definately our favourite...

And we always do this kinda stuff!

Lilly read the story in the play at the Homeschool Camp!

Is there a difference between Home Schooling and Natural Learning?

There are so many term how do I know which type of schooling is best for my child?

Child-led Natural Learning is often referred to as "Autonomous Learning", "Unschooling" "self-directed Learning", and sometimes as "Home Education", but it should not be confused with the "school at home" Homeschooling. Children learn when they are ready, making it very easy to pick up the knowledge. Children will absorb much more because they are learning by their own desire to know. Children naturally model parents, and integrate their strategies. Children are provided with many choices and options so that they can be free to make educational decisions for themselves. Children become intimately involved in all aspects of family life, often including family working life. How does formal education differ from childhood learning? It is clear that the interesting action, the stuff that comprises a child's mental life in school, is about interaction with other children in one form or another. Learning, that is truly natural, will be the result of the child's own development and own motivations and not necessarily influenced by peer groups. This is the way children learn to walk and talk. It is not a natural process is you:
- have your child enrolled at school
- insist that you know what is best for your child to learn
- use a curriculum or instructional materials or pre-packaged solutions unless your child asks for them
- worry about whether your child is doing well compared with your neighbor's child
- focussed on short term goals (such as school examinations)
- have to put up with a bored child who has no desire to learn.
You will only want to pursue natural learning if you are convinced by the philosophy and are able to afford to have at least one parent available to support your child's learning at all time. Most people will not understand that natural learning does not involve children following a curriculum, taking exams, being forced to socialize in the same peer groups everyday, using textbooks, etc.
A small portion of our society is going back to the days of parent-child relationship that was the norm before compulsory public education. In return, the child maintains a desire-to-learn, if not a love-to-learn.

We Homeschool. It's better for the environment.

I'm not sure what's wrong with us, we just really like our kids!

GORGEOUS NATURAL BIRTHING

Hey if you haven't seen these then you need to, but warning I cried it was so beautiful...

One is the Riki Lake, Business of Being Born and the other is in support of this gorgeous new book about Painless Birthing and it is so yummy, it almost makes me want to have another baby just to experience it!
Painless Birthing is Possible - MOVIE
I loved this beautiful clip about how chakras and basic human rights are matched to the development of the foetus in the womb and it was just so inspiring, I want a painless birth too...
Business of Being Born - MOVIE
Oh I cried and cried, I live in Australia and although the mass market still leans towards birth with every known pain killer and intervention there is still a strong movement away from this doctor dominated consumer birthing environment. I had two water births in hospitals with only midwives present and everything in my time in my way and it was gorgeous but my third birth was not so lucky. I managed to avoid interventions ( I just kept saying to myself that Charlie Jazz and I were perfect and we could do it on our own ) and I had a very strong partner who was not afraid of being rude to the staff but even so they ruined the experience for me. In my most vulnerable moments I was manipulated, violated and betrayed by that midwife and I had to really fight for my rights to birth naturally and experience joy and celebration and love in the process. Boy I remember it like it was yesterday, I think I have a video somewhere - I would love to post it! Must start diggin'

IF YOU ARE PREGNANT YOU SHOULD READ THIS!

and i will live vicariously through you and suppress my longings and cravings to have a nother baby for a while longer! He he

It's Okay to Fish!

BOOK REVIEW on - Free at Last: The Sudbury Valley School by Daniel Greenberg

Wow! What an inspiring read, this is a great place to start if you are new to Natural Learning or Home Education. It is beautifully arranged in easy bite size chunks exploring real life experiences of the staff and students at Sudbury Valley. I must admit my favourite chapter was about a boy who just wanted to fish and lucky for him he was allowed to for years and years! Yes. that's right fish and fish and do nothing else but fish. Needless to say he became an expert on the subject testing and exploring the efficacy of different baiting styles and of course learning about the biology of the fish and the eco-diversity of his natural environment and much more...
His parents were somewhat concerned but trusted the system of the school and eventually it became apparent that what the boy learned was so much more than anybody could have ever "taught" him. His interest in fishing developed into a passion and he learned to devote himself to his work (which he incidentally loved). After a while that boy stopped fishing and became a successful businessman in the field of software development. When he was ready and knew what he wanted he applied himself and acquired all the skills needed relating to his software business in record time. His focus and dedication was what drove his success and yes, those invaluable skills were learnt from fishing!
I love this story - and the book is full of other inspirational tales that are a great tool to have in the back of your mind as you watch your children develop the natural way.
Be peaceful and patient, everyone has their own path and you have been given a unique opportunity to share in your child's path so enjoy the ride! Nothing compares!

This is just such a great read, you absolutely must have it!

What is Natural Learning?

How do I know if I am doing it?

Natural learning is not compatible with lockstep classrooms nor with rigid curricula, nor is learning measurable by multiple choice tests.
  • Is an enjoyable thing to do for everyone. (So there shouldn't be any moaning or rolling of eyes.)
  • Is a conscious decision that learning should take place in a natural manner without recourse to the institution of school. (So it's not a bossy thing and it's not a pressured thing where you have to create comprehensive lesson plans.)
  • is a "post-modern" form of education often known as 'un-schooling'. (Definitely not just a crazy hippy ideal.)
  • Is the learning people do every day of their lives. (It happens regardless of whether you choose it or not. But you can make the decision to support the process and influence the content that is being learned. For example, allow your child to develop positive self esteem by refraining from criticizing their life choices.)
  • Is invigorating because the learner feels a strong personal connection to the content, is ripe for it and has selected it. (So you can just let your child enjoy their own process of discovery.)
  • Is a very complex form of learning because it fits the person as well as a finely tailored suit or perfectly crafted dentures. (In other words your child will naturally learn what is appropriate for their development at the appropriate time if you give them the right materials and the space to explore themselves.)
  • Natural learning is, and will always remain, the most important form of learning.

What do you think about the current schooling system?

People have powerful natural mechanisms for learning that allow them to master an enormous volume and variety of material during their lifetimes. Learning is not natural when it involves adults imposing their ideas of curriculum on children and young people. Learning, that is truly natural, will be the result of the child's own development and own motivations. Learning implies growth, and growth implies the realization of an inner pattern of design and harmony. Learning is ultimately a self-design process, therefore each individual has the right to follow their own inner wisdom. Learning is a natural process that every child experiences in her own unique way. Learning to learn is the most fundamental learning of all. Learning processes can be both planned and opportunistic. Schools fail to educate because they don't leverage the natural learning process. What is the attitude of students towards classroom learning? How do schools fail to ignite the natural learning process? Can we make schools conform more closely to natural learning? How does a fixed curriculum inhibit learning? Only school-age children associate learning with fear of failure? What would you do different if you were following a natural learning approach?
