Give Your Living Space A Naturally Calming Ambiance With Sun Dome Skylights

Ranked #37,960 in Travel & Places, #933,349 overall

Have you noticed that solar tube skylights are now appearing in more buildings? These light diffusing devices can also be termed a sun tube or sun tunnel and are usually categorized alongside other TDD's (tubular lighting devices). They can be bought in a range of designs such as straight, jointed, or curved, all of which are able to boost the level of natural light entering a room space.

They have a resemblance to other recessed lighting fixtures and would not look out of place no matter what decor is dominant in the room. It is often said that a dome skylight is easier to install than other tubular lighting devices and in most cases would cost less. Their size also means that the heat lost in winter and the heat gained in the summer months is greatly reduced. They are highly efficient when compared to other skylights.

The Advantages

The main concept is to provide a living space with as much indirect sunlight as possible. As the light is diffused it is far less harmful and damaging to people and furnishings. For example furnishings would not be affected by as many ultraviolet rays and our eyes would feel much less strain. There are also designs available that feature an integrated electrical light that can be switched on at night or on heavily overcast days.

The bulk of tubular skylight designs feature an acrylic lens and metal frame. The actual tubes are place within a dome that is fixed into the roof. They also use a reflective sun scoop that directs the daylight into a tube. This tube has a reflective coating that can guide the light out through a diffuser. It is the diffuser that can be seen in the room's ceiling.

Although they are quite compact when compared to other skylights, a tubular design is still able to bring a high level of light into any room. It has been claimed that on an average winter's day the light output is the same as a 700 watt bulb, while during the summer this can increase to 1200 watts. This would be sufficient for almost everyone's needs.

The cost of a modern tubular skylight can vary extensively. The cheapest can be picked up for as little as a hundred dollars, but for a top quality product expect to fork out upwards of five hundred dollars. It is best to avoid the budget options as their design and finish is not going to be so great.

When choosing an installer, it is wise to do a fair amount of research. Do not choose an installer without doing a background check. If possible, use a firm that has been recommended to you. If the installer has little or no experience you may end up with a skylight that is prone to drafts and leaks.

It is possible for anyone who has some knowledge of D.I.Y. projects to fit a tubular skylight by themselves. With the cost of energy increasing every year it makes sense to integrate practices into our homes and workplaces that can cut down the amount of energy required for heating and cooling. It cannot be denied that a room brightened by the natural light, provided by skylights, creates a more productive and less stressful ambiance than artificial lights.
