Natural Pet Remedies
Just like humans, domesticated animals like dogs and cats are affected by the health hazards of modern living. Pollution, poor nutrition, stress and unhealthy lifestyles can lead to a variety of illnesses and conditions that are very similar to those experienced by humans.

These days, emotional and psychological problems like depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioral problems are just as prevalent in pets as they are in their owners. Similarly, physical ailments such as diabetes, arthritis, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, cystitis, kidney and liver disease, skin disorders, obesity, thyroid dysfunction and other problems are becoming more and more common in domesticated animals.

Many, if not most of these conditions can be prevented by helping your pets to live a healthier lifestyle. For pets already suffering from existing conditions, a combination of lifestyle changes and natural medicine can work wonders!

While it has its place, conventional medicine for animals and 'modern technology' have failed our pets in many ways.

According to pet expert and author CJ Puotinen, most holistic veterinarians and animal health care professions list annual vaccinations and commercial pet foods as the major contributory cause in the rising rates of chronic illness in pets today.

Similarly, Juliette de Bairacli Levy, respected author and renowned animal breeder, points out that contrary to the belief that mass vaccination and antibiotic use will contribute to a decrease in disease, the opposite has in fact proved true. Like their human counterparts, today's pets are becoming more and more vulnerable to chronic disease and ill health.

This has led many veterinarians to search for alternatives and to espouse more holistic methods of keeping our pets healthy.

Common Foods That Can Kill Your Pets

Most pet owners don't know that their refrigerators are likely to contain common human treats that can kill or severely harm their pets!

While for pet owners the passing holiday season means overeating and an expanded waistline, for our pets, being overindulged with too many table scraps could result in a fatal outcome.

Recently, the ASPCA ran a report on toxic foods for pets, and for most of us, the foods that can hurt your pet are a shocking surprise.

To ensure your pet's health and safety, take a look at some foods that can be harmful:

Chocolate-This delicious treat is made with cocoa beans, which contain a chemical called theobromine that is toxic to dogs. Keep this in mind, especially on Valentine's Day!

Grapes-While the exact reason why they are harmful is unknown, they have been linked to cases of acute kidney failure.

Cocoa mulch-The bean shells of cocoa, which are a by-product of chocolate, are used as mulch for landscaping. Many people are unaware that the toxic chemical theobromine is present in this type of mulch that is often ingested by curious pets.

Fatty foods-Fats are difficult for a dog to digest and can overtax the pancreas, leading to potentially fatal pancreatitis.

Nuts-The high phosphorus content in nuts is linked to the formation of bladder stones. Macadamia nuts in particular are especially harmful.

Onions-Studies show that onions as well as onion powder can prompt hemolytic anemia in dogs.

Potatoes-Though rare, the toxin solanine can be found in a potato's green sprouts and skins. Potatoes should therefore be cooked and mashed in order to be safe for your pet's consumption.

Artificial sweeteners-Consuming large amounts of these synthetics can lead to an abrupt drop in blood sugar levels, causing symptoms such as depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. In as little as 30 minutes, signs of toxicity can become apparent, and immediate veterinary treatment is necessary.

Turkey-The consumption of turkey skin is linked to acute pancreatis most likely caused by its high fat content.

Other foods listed by the ASPCA as harmful:

Alcoholic beverages
Avocado (the only "fatty" member of the vegetable family)
Coffee (all forms of coffee)
Moldy or spoiled foods
Salt
Yeast dough
Garlic

To help counteract any internal damage that may have been caused from these foods, consider supplementing your pet's diet with natural remedies to restore health.

PetAlive Digestive Support is a great detoxifying agent which soothes gastric mucus membranes and inflammation, while also relieving symptoms of chronic digestive disorders and conditions.

PetAlive DetoxPlus also works to purify the blood and eliminate toxins, and can be very effective for systemic recovery after illness.

In addition to human foods that can be toxic, think twice about the prescription drugs you are giving your pet, as recent studies have shown that they can be harmful, too.

The FDA reported new information on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which have been linked to 22,000 cases of illness in dogs, with nearly 3,000 of those being deadly. Meanwhile, manufacturers continue to tout the safety of these drugs when used according to the label, and claim that vets are provided with information on their potential side effects.

However, there are natural options available for treating your pet without risking harmful side effects or fatal consequences. Preventative measures can also be taken to promote vitality and balance in the body. PetAlive Immunity & Liver Support acts as a liver tonic to boost immune functioning and resistance to disease and infection, while aiding overall systemic function and toxin elimination.

Why do we need to detoxify and cleanse our bodies?

21st Century life brings with it stress, environmental pollution, unhealthy diets and fast foods. Illnesses like cancer, heart disease, arthritis and other lifestyle diseases are becoming more frequent. The Food We Eat - Despite plentiful food supplies and excellent medical facilities, many people in the Western world do not really know what it is like to feel truly healthy, full of energy and vitality. Modern farming methods are often more geared to producing food that is 'bigger and better' - rather than food that is healthy and life sustaining. Even so-called 'healthy food' is full of artificial hormones, insecticides and other chemicals, which destroy the vitamins and essential nutrition of the food we eat. Detox Drops - cleanse your body, naturally and also assist with weight loss by improving the body's ability to break down and eliminate fat. Combining the powerful detoxifying effects of Western herbal medicine and African herbalism, Detox Drops can help you to feel healthy, more energetic and full of life.

New Disorders - Are You Being Duped?

People often refer to our society as severely over-medicated and perhaps that claim is not quite such an exaggeration anymore! According to the National Council on Patient Information and Education, 49% of all Americans use prescription drugs - and 32 million are taking three or more each day! These staggering statistics account for over $110 billion in sales.

If those numbers aren't convincing enough that we may be succumbing to the pressures of the media to use prescription drugs to solve any and all ailments, perhaps the onslaught of new "disorders" cropping up may be further evidence to take a second look before popping another pill.

One of the most notable includes compulsive shopping "disorder", where "victims" are now being prescribed medicine to "control symptoms".

Perhaps taking a closer look at the actual behaviors and their root causes would be a wiser decision for instance, is the sufferer dealing with intense emotional issues that trigger mini (or lengthy) spending sprees to compensate/distract for other problems?

If so, natural remedies like PureCalm and MindSoothe can help balance mood and detrimental behaviors which might be a better solution than masking a serious problem with a temporary fix. Some counseling may also be recommended, on a case-by-case basis.

Other prominent "disorders" include balding, impotence, and memory loss. Often, people overlook the environments that contributed to these "new" conditions, including nutrition, exercise, and aging. It's possible that we are now just more hyper-aware and informed of our state of health.

In addition, today's "live-forever" society has also given way to the general belief that the physical body should be indestructible, and that every condition can be treated and prevented.

We tend to forget that the body often needs a little extra help in functioning as we age, but these changes are not to be considered "disorders"-just normal signs of getting older!

ReGrow Plus, Ikawe, and Triple Complex Brain Tonic are effective alternatives to the aforementioned respective conditions, and may provide a more pleasant alternative to harsh prescription medications.

It is probably likely that many of the conditions that plague us are in fact induced by our own actions%u2026 particularly the high number of sleep disorders.

For instance, a popular coffee drink at a national chain contains more than 350 mg of caffeine, compared to an average 50 mg in a can of soda. It's no wonder that insomnia has become one of the fastest-growing complaints at doctor's offices nationwide. And, while the condition is legitimately a problem, many are suffering from pseudo-insomnia, related to caffeine and other stimulants.

Before turning to a prescription, first try investigating causes of your symptoms and consider exploring natural options if they are persistent. There are herbal remedies that help you develop and maintain healthy sleep patterns like SerenitePlus, Serenite-LT and Serenite Jr. for children.
The thought process of fabricating or simply inflating disorders has trickled down to those not yet able to make informed decisions on their own.

Kids are not resistant to the influence of the medical industry, either. In fact, just the opposite%u2026 the number of kids currently medicated has doubled, and in some cases tripled between 1987 and 1996, among most classes of medication.

Given children's vulnerability, it is especially important to get involved in the health of your child, and first look at the behaviors that drugs are used to treat rather than the other way around.

Tuning into your body's messages is easier said than done, as we've become accustomed to the rapid-relief pressures of society. However, in order to put an end to this epidemic of prescription drugs, we must learn to really evaluate our symptoms, and decide which "ailments" are truly worth medicating.

A cold and the flu can have some very similar symptoms. Compare the symptoms you see to the chart below to help determine whether they are indicative of a cold or flu.

"...I have tried everything, nothing really worked without side effects or without taking it constantly. I have recently - over the past eight months - gone through some very stressful events... I have tried products from Native Remedies for [other problems] and found they all worked well... I decided to give MindSoothe a try instead. Within 3 weeks I was [better]. It has been a wonderful feeling. Today I only take MindSoothe once in the morning and I am good to go for the rest of the day. If life gets a little stressful, I add another dose at night. It has worked wonders for me. Thank you!" - Dawn, Canada

"After the death of my mother this spring, my doctor put me on Ambien for my sleepless nights. I tried taking myself off of it, but was unsuccessful. I had become addicted to the Ambien. I began researching different products to help me wean off the Ambien and chose to follow the regimen on your website for the SerenitePlus capsules and MindSoothe combination. I successfully weaned myself off the Ambien immediately thanks to your products. SerenitePlus is absolutely wonderful! Because of the emotional stress my mother's death caused me, I definitely did need the MindSoothe to work in conjunction with the SerenitePlus. I had bought three bottles of each one from you and was prepared to have to take them until September before I figured I would notice any results and much to my surprise, after just three weeks of using those products as directed, I have been able to stop taking all of them. I still have two bottles of each left, but I intend to keep them on hand for any future sleepless nights or stressors that may occur. Thank you so much for your products - I have been recommending them to all of my friends." - Laurie K.

"Every morning I had hair all over my bed and I was too depressed to wash my hair in case it fell out. really no one can understand how it feels to loose your hair like this! People said appearance doesn't matter but to me it does. I can recommend ReGrow Plus to anyone with the same problem as mine. Sometimes I even forget that I ever had this problem!" - Sherri B

"After my divorce, I began dating again and met a few lovely women. But -can you believe it - every time I 'got lucky', the whole thing fell flat and I just couldn't perform! Exercise helped a bit, but I just wasn't the man I used to be. Things were going from bad to worse and I even stopped dating because I was so anxious! Eventually a friend told me about Ikawe and I thought 'What have I got to lose?' Six weeks later, I just can't get enough and nor can my new girlfriend! What a difference!"- Stewart, UK

Digestive Disorders

Digestive Disorders can be confusing! Here are some definitions.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - also known as 'spastic colon' is one of the most common chronic health disorders in the world and affects up to 20% of the population. It is a dysfunction of the bowel and large intestine, causing lower abdominal pain, cramping, constipation and diarrhea. Causes have not been conclusively identified, but are thought to involve problems in communication between the bowel and the brain.

Crohn's Disease - is one of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. It causes inflammation in the digestive tract (usually the small intestine), resulting in chronic pain and diarrhea. There may also be rectal bleeding, weight loss and even fever. There are different theories about what causes Crohn's Disease, but many doctors believe that the immune system reacts to a virus or a bacterium, causing chronic inflammation in the intestine. Crohn's Disease tends to run in families. Diverticulosis - is a condition in which 'pockets' or diverticula form on the wall of the colon or the large intestine, usually on the left side. This is a result of weaknesses in the bowel wall. Symptoms include left lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramps, changes in bowel habits or even rectal bleeding . Diverticulosis is associated with a diet high in processed foods and low in fibre and fluids.

Diverticulitis occurs when there is an infection in the 'pockets' or diverticula of the intestinal wall. Diverticulosis can be effectively treated by increasing dietary fibre and fluid intake and using herbs to soothe and tone the lining of the digestive tract.

Ulcerative Colitis - is also an Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is associated with inflammation and ulcers in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. People who suffer from ulcerative colitis usually alternate between periods of flare ups and remission, often influenced by stress, diet or illness. Symptoms include rectal bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping and an urgent need to empty the bowels.

Gastritis - is an inflammation of the stomach lining. It may be caused by eating spoiled food, by bacteria, viruses, by certain chemicals, as well as by stress and lifestyle factors. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea and cramps. Gastritis may be acute or chronic. People who suffer from chronic gastritis should investigate dietary changes, stress management and removal of alcohol, cigarettes and spices.

GERD - or Acid Reflux Disease - is a condition in which the stomach acid 'backs up' or refluxes into the oesophagus due to dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter. This causes pain and burning, often called heartburn - although it has nothing to do with the heart. While we all have heartburn at some stage, persistent heartburn (more than two or three episodes a week) may suggest Acid Reflux Disease. Other symptoms include a sour taste in the mouth, swallowing difficulties, upset stomach and even coughing and hoarseness. Some causes of Acid Reflux Disease, or GERD, include a hiatal hernia, obesity, smoking, alcohol abuse and certain foods. Symptoms can be greatly relieved or prevented by lifestyle and dietary changes as well as the use of herbs known to promote healthy digestion. If symptoms persist, it is always wise to consult your doctor to prevent further complications. Heartburn, Indigestion, acid reflux, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation - are all symptoms which we experience from time to time. If you are occasionally troubled by these symptoms, you can obtain quick relief by using Native Remedies DigestAssist Drops, specially formulated for rapid relief of uncomfortable digestive complaints. If you have these symptoms regularly, this may indicate incorrect diet, unhealthy lifestyle or one of the conditions described above.

Natural Remedies for Digestive Disorders

What causes headaches and migraines?

Stress and tension are high up on the list of culprits. Stress causes the muscles in the neck and head to tense up, thereby constricting blood flow to the brain. Migraine may be preceded by a spasm of the arteries leading to the brain, once again diminishing blood flow to the brain. Hormonal fluctuations may cause headache or migraine. This may also be linked to the contraceptive pill. Buildup of toxins and poor liver functioning can also be responsible for headaches because of the body's inability to eliminate toxins from the diet or the environment. Certain foods, such as chocolate, cheese, nuts, alcohol and MSG may trigger migraines in susceptible people. Low blood sugar levels and dehydration can also bring on headache, especially if you have skipped a meal

Natural Headache Prevention

What can go wrong with your Kidneys?

The two most common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. If you or your family has a history of these diseases, you may be at risk for kidney problems. Some kidney diseases are inherited, for example Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Infection, direct injury, poisons and drugs (Like prescription or over-the-counter painkillers) can also lead to serious kidney damage or dysfunction. All of the above disorders and diseases can lead to decreased kidney function or kidney (renal) failure. This may happen suddenly (Acute Renal Failure) or, more commonly, gradually over years of disease (Chronic Renal Failure). Kidney stones are also a very common problem. These are formed by clumps of crystals which can block the urinary system. Depending on the size of ak kidney stone, it may be passed out in the urine unnoticed or cause severe pain - some may even require surgery.

Joint Ease Plus

Promotes joint and muscular-skeletal system health

Use JointEase Plus:

Maintain healthy, trouble free joints and muscles
Keep all joints moving freely
Promote health in large joints as well as small joints of the hands, feet, toes, elbows and knees
Support healthy cartilage and connective tissue
Maintain comfort levels in all joints

What is JointEase Plus?

JointEase Plus means freedom to walk and move with ease!

JointEase Plus contains 100% pure Harpagophytum procumbens, also known as 'Sengaparile,' 'Devil's Claw' or 'Duiwelsklou', because of the claw-like shape of its fruit. For thousands of years, the Khoisan people of the Kalahari Desert (in Southern Africa) have used Devil's Claw to promote healthy joints as well as for a digestive tonic.

Our new and even more powerful formula now combines Devil's Claw with Glucosamine sulphate and Boswellia serata, both in the forefront of latest developments in the natural promotion of joint and muscle health. (See more on these new ingredients in the 'Ingredients' section below)

How effective is JointEase Plus?

Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Devil's Claw in promoting joint, cartilage and back (especially lower back) health, (Lecompte & Costa, 1992; Chrubasik, 1996). In a study by Brady et al, (1981), serum cholesterol and uric acid levels were shown to be reduced after treatment with Devil's Claw. Scientific studies have also indicated that it is effective in stimulating the lymphatic system to improve immune health and increase resistance against disease.

Glucosamine is naturally manufactured in the body and scientists know that this simple substance is found in relatively high concentrations in the joints and connective tissues, where its function is to repair cartilage and maintain joint mobility.

Boswellia has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine. Modern science has verified its excellent benefits for joint health (Kimmatkar N, et al. Efficacy and tolerability of Boswellia serrata extract in treatment of osteoarthritis of knee--a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial. Phytomedicine 2003 Jan; 10(1):3-7). With regular use, blood supply to the joints is also maintained, keeping soft tissue nourished and viable.

How has JointEase Plus helped others?

"Pat came to see me after her husband had died. She was in her late 50's and had been looking forward to spending her retirement with her husband. When I first met her, I thought that she was in her early 70's. Pat moved like a much older woman, struggling to sit down and to get up from her chair after the first session had ended. We spoke about her husband and her feelings of loss and anger at his death. Pat told me that she saw little reason to continue living without her husband, and said that she found it very difficult to complete even her daily household tasks, let alone get out for enjoyment. Her felt permanently exhausted and she did not see how she was going to be able to cope. However, she agreed to come and see me for a period of 3 months. In addition to grief counseling, I advised Pat to take JointEase Plus, which has proved to be of great benefit to many of my patients needing joint support. Over the next few months, it was wonderful to see how Pat looked younger and stronger. She developed a spring in her step and felt much more able to cope with her daily life. I persuaded Pat to join a 'Walk for Life' group, in order to give herself some additional exercise and also to meet new people. At the end of 3 months, we terminated therapy as Pat felt that she was once more able to look forward to life. She still missed her husband dreadfully, but now had a busy social life and for the first time in many years, was able to go about her day without problems."

-Michele Carelse , Clinical Psychologist

"I am 69 and I took JointEase quite skeptically after it was recommended by a friend, because I have not had much experience with herbal products. After 3 - 4 weeks I could really feel the difference. Now about three months later I am taking a half dose and am walking upright again for the first time in years. My compliments on a very effective product, which helps more and is a fraction of the price of other medicines. I am walking proof that it works!"

-Frank C. Somerset West

"JointEase Plus has saved my life! I can move around and begin to enjoy life again. To me it is unbelievable and. I simply cannot thank you and your team enough!!!!!"

-Jennifer Bailey

How to prepare and care for your pet while traveling

Summer is a popular travel season for many families, and furry friends are often a great factor to weigh-in when in making get-away plans. Whether pets travel along with their owner or find alternate housing during time away, there are many things to consider regarding pets' overall health, comfort, and safety.

Traveling with pets can pose many changes in environment, which can result in disturbances in a dog or cat's delicate system such as digestive upsets and changes in mood. Taking some time to plan for a pet's comfort can greatly enhance its travel experience, and eliminate some potential pitfalls.

Whether an itinerary involves a plane or car, many of the same tips for care apply. Before making arrangements, ensure that vaccinations, health certificates, and identification tags are up-to-date, and that the pet has a full supply of necessary medications. Compile a simple first aid kit with minor wound care supplies, anti-diarrhea and digestive remedies, and emergency phone numbers. Natural remedies can also be used to provide excellent support for many common conditions, without side effects.

Take care of grooming issues before travel, such as bathing and trimming nails, in case facilities are not available for use. Also be sure to evaluate your pet's current state of health, addressing any minor or potential problems well in advance.

Many animals become uncomfortable in unfamiliar environments, so minimizing disturbances or providing reassurance throughout the journey can be very helpful in easing anxiety or curbing aggression, which may result from fear of the unknown. Bring along a favorite toy or feeding dish.

You can also make use of natural remedies to provide additional support for mood imbalances commonly experienced during travel. Many herbal and homeopathic ingredients are well known for their ability to provide effective relief without creating dependency or side effects.

If traveling by car, take a few short rides to acclimate the dog or cat to the experience. Cats are often best suited to travel in a crate, and dogs are often well inclined to them, as well. Allow time for breaks and walks in the travel schedule, allowing the animal to stretch and exercise. This too can help with easing the stress of a new environment. Try to feed the pet its largest meal in the evening or upon reaching the destination to ease digestive discomfort or motion sickness. Keep in mind the perishableness of wet food, and acclimate the dog or cat to eating dry food a few days before departure to help minimize stomach upsets. Consider supplementing its diet with natural digestive support remedies to maintain health during travel.

When traveling by plane, always confirm pet regulations well in advance so that preparations can be made as necessary. Take into consideration the climate differences and try to book a flight in the early morning or in the evening, whenever weather is more comfortable. Also, consult with a vet for proper feeding instructions based on your pet's age, size, time and distance of the flight. Generally, traveling on an empty stomach is best. The day of travel, arrive at the airport early to allow your pet to exercise and adapt to the crate.

If boarding the animal is unavoidable, thoroughly research the best options for doing so. As summer is a very popular time of travel, booking reservations well in advance is often a necessity. In addition, since your pet will be exposed to other animals and potential illnesses, consider supplementing its diet with an immunity-boosting remedy to support systemic health. Also, try and plan for possible ill health scenarios, and have remedies on-hand or available to give to caretakers in case they are needed. When possible, leave the pet with friends or family, in an environment they are familiar and comfortable staying in.

When a pet is away from home, be sure to perform a daily health check (or advise its caretaker to do so). Monitor and evaluate appetite, energy, and overall disposition. Also look out for unusual discharges from the nose and eyes, as well as scratching, biting, itching, changes in elimination, or unfamiliar lumps or bumps. While preventative health precautions are always best, early detection of a problem is the next best thing.

My vet referred us to [Easy Travel Solution] for the car, which has been very effective for my cat. Thanks for your great service! It is always a pleasure to deal with your staff!" - Neville K.

"Pet Alive is the only product line I trust for my animals. I use your remedies for all my cats and dogs and have just added RuniPoo Relief to my collection. I just wanted to let you know that once again I am not disappointed. RuniPoo Relief is just as effective as all your other products." -Tammi Berera

"Our vet recommended your Muscle & Joint Support caps and we have seen a big change. She means so much to us and we are very grateful to PetAlive for this great product!" -Jeff R.

Can Your Divorce Destroy Your Pet's Health?

Some Say Yes and What You Can Do

We often hear how children are negatively affected by their parent's splitting up but what happens when these "children" are our pets? In some cases, the effects can be the same-and can develop into stress-related health problems if not addressed and managed.

Unfortunately, since our pets cannot speak to us and express their feelings, we're left to decipher their emotions through their actions and behaviors. Often, these physical behaviors are accompanied by intense emotions that animal behaviorists and psychologists compare to depression, nervousness, and anxiety in humans.

This destructive and self-mutilating behavior can be attributed to feeling the emotional tension between the human partners splitting up, as animals are very perceptive and sensitive, similar to young children. It may also be attributed to an external factor, such as not being walked as often as before with two partners, or missing the interaction it received from the more attentive owner.

Unfortunately, few pet "parents" consider including their pet in their prenup agreement, and pets are still not treated like children in a court of law. While attorneys who specialize in pet custody cases do exist, they are difficult to find, and courts are not in favor of accepting pet cases. Animals are often referred to as "property", with most judges disregarding any involvement of pet disputes - no matter how much they are loved and respected within a household.

Therefore, pet owners are usually left to contend with pet "custody" on their own. However, especially since pets are sensitive to emotional and physical behavior problems initiated or aggravated by the divorce, it is important to come to an amicable agreement to help minimize drastic disturbances in a pet's routine, and help maintain stability.

While your own emotions may be running rampant, try and keep your pet's best interest in mind. Consider the typical process for what might happen for a human child during a split-up, including visitation rights, shared custody, etc. Be fair and work with your ex about managing your new shared or full-time schedule.

How a Little Pampering Goes beyond Pretty

While you may or may not indulge your pet in couture-inspired clothing or decadent faux diamond collars, you likely still have ideas in mind for how to reciprocate for the daily loving and affection received from your pet this holiday season.

According to statistics, in the United States, there are now more dogs per household than children, and in the UK, while the human birth rate has been falling over the past decade, nearly half the population now owns a pet, says the Norwich Union. Given these numbers, it seems many can agree that pets are like our "kids", and treated as such with special attention in the household.

The holiday season is a wonderful opportunity to spend a little extra time and care on your pet, as he or she can help decrease stress levels, which are known to rise during this time of year.

Besides love and affection, providing pets with proper healthcare is the best gift we can offer. Early detection and regular maintenance can go a long way to building a strong foundation for your pet's health.

Just like us, our pets may put a little extra strut in their step when they're well-groomed, including fur, skin and nails. In addition, maintaining a healthy exterior for your pet can go a long way in internal health and functioning, too.

Being an organ of the body, the skin should not be seen in isolation. In fact, skin health and vitality are best achieved by pursuing systemic health. Following a healthy diet and exercise routine helps to support the body as a whole and can have excellent results on skin health if adhered to regularly. Remember that anything that affects your pet's liver will definitely also affect the appearance of the skin and coat, as the liver and skin are closely linked in their efforts to purify and cleanse the body.

Natural remedies can be very effective in helping to support your pet's system in its natural process of elimination and purification, thereby providing a healthy solution to waste and toxin removal and promoting optimum general bodily functioning. Herbal and homeopathic medicine can also help to maintain all-round systemic functioning and promote health and vigor to pets.

In addition, be sure to show love for your pet in a healthy way. We also have to be sensitive to pets who have become accustomed to associating 'treats' with love and affection, and find other ways to show our love towards them Instead of offering that tidbit, caress your pet - you will both feel much better for it," says Michele Carelse, Native Remedies and PetAlive's clinical psychologist.

Taking the Headache Out of the Holidays

Did you know that it is estimated that 25 million Americans suffer from debilitating headaches? For many more, holiday stress can actually be a trigger - even when headaches normally aren't a problem.

Holiday stress has become so rampant that it has become increasingly hard to associate this time of the year with heartwarming traditions like caroling and nutmeg.

Holiday Stressors

Stress, longer hours at work, decorating, shopping, finding the perfect gift and even family gatherings can bring us to a breaking point, causing tension headaches and nervous system problems such as anxiety and insomnia- understandably making the glittering holiday lights less than pleasant.

We all have specific issues that cause stress during the holidays. Common worries are usually relating to finances, family, or ill-health. While we cannot change or control all our troubles, we can adjust our attitude accordingly.

Adjust Your Attitude & Reduce Stress

Minimizing stress and anxiety during the holidays is possible, as many types of stress -- including holiday stress -- stem from unrealistic expectations. Once you learn to accept (and expect) little problems and imperfections, you'll reduce holiday stress simply because you'll have realistic goals and expectations.

It's inevitable that some troubles will arise during the holiday season; a few family arguments may occur, and gifts may disappoint, after all- it's not only you dealing with holiday madness. Learning to go with the flow and accept-even laugh- at flaws can make a big difference in your outlook. This can be applied to everyday life as well!

Pamper yourself

Reducing holiday stress (and stress in general) will come naturally once you learn to treat yourself well - whether it's a massage, pedicure, manicure, or day spa (remember to book it early).

All of these stress reducing tips will not only help you relax and enjoy the holidays, but they will also help reduce your changes of suffering from tension headaches and even migraines.

Remember, doing something for yourself will go a long way in lifting your spirit this holiday season. Listen to soothing music and make sure to get enough sleep! Just remember- the holidays REALLY don't have to be a headache!

From stress to pain relief, peppermint works wonders

Did you know that the main ingredient in a favorite seasonal treat offers amazing health benefits as well? Especially during the holidays, when added stress can disrupt the nervous system-causing debilitating migraines or tension headaches, digestive upset, heartburn and more-welcome peppermint into your life; it's a natural healer!

Peppermint has been found to reduce sensitivity to pain and the extract has a relaxing effect on tight muscles in the head and neck - which often trigger tension headaches.

In a study performed in England, researchers asked headache-suffering patients to apply peppermint extract on their foreheads. Amazingly, 95 percent of users said they felt a soothing effect within two minutes! Not only that, but they also said they found it more convenient then conventional pain killers.

Studies have also repeatedly shown the capacity peppermint has to relieve symptoms of digestive complaints, such as nausea, indigestion, dyspepsia, and colonic muscle spasms, which can also be aggravated by stress.

The healing capacity of peppermint even goes beyond nervous and digestive health. Peppermint oil has plentiful quantities of a phytonutrient called monoterpene, which in animal studies, has been shown to halt the growth of pancreatic, mammary, and liver tumors. Not only that, it has also been shown to protect against cancer formation in the colon, skin, and lungs. With all these benefits, it's a wonder we only enjoy this tasty treat during the holidays.
