Nature Has Charms to Soothe the Soul
My favorite vacations have always been ones in our national or state parks or other beautiful places. There's just something about getting away from concrete and buildings and masses of humanity that soothes the soul and refreshes. There does not seem to be any stress that won't be minimized by getting away from it all! Immersion in green trees, beautiful rocks, flowing waterfalls, mountains, seashore, even the desert, all make life worth living even after the worst "civilized" experiences.
Whenever I need to think, I head for a country road, open the windows and just breathe the fresh air. 20 minutes is all it takes to have a new outlook. Here are some stories and pictures of some of my favorite natural wonders.
Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is just unbelievable! Pictures just can't do it justice, because you can't get the impact of the immenseness of the place from a picture.
I first went there as a child with my parents and vowed to go back and ride a mule to the bottom. In 1987 I got to do this with my sister and it was one of the highlights of my life. I've been many times, taken my children, gone to the North rim, the South rim, camped there, hiked there, saw my first Elk there. It's magnificent!
In These Photos, the Cabin Was the One We Stayed in at the Bottom of the Canyon.
Arches National Park, Utah
Travel the Southwest
Beautiful red rock formations which wind erosion has shaped into multiple arches... Arctic Circle and Antarctica
Travel the World
The air is so cold in the Arctic regions that sometimes the water in the waves freezes as soon as it hits the air and if there is seaweed or other debris it gets frozen along with the water. As this happens over and over it produces striking bands in the ice. Aspen Grove, Colorado
Travel the United States
The Aspen grove is the world's largest living organism. While the trees seem singular, the roots in the grove are all interconnected. It is all one big giant living creature!Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, all show the Aspen trees in their striking beauty.
Bryce Canyon, Utah
I went there on what some call The Circle Tour, which includes the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Lake Powell, and Arches National Park. After that vacation I felt drenched in the wonders of our planet, which is why I called this lens, Natural Wonder. It was very hard to go back to work after being gone for a week experiencing nature that way.
Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
and Cave of the Winds, Colorado
All of these caves are like walking into huge jewelled cages with all the stalagmites and stalagtites forming beautiful underground rooms. I highly recommend seeing one or all of them. Everglades, Florida
Travel the United States
Located at the tip of Florida is an exotic world that is very strange...teeming with alligators, crocodiles, and snakes. Glacier National Park, Montana
Travel the United States
My husband and I like Glacier Park even better than Yellowstone. Spectacular scenery summer or winter... Grand Tetons, Wyoming
Travel the United States
Located close to Yellowstone the Tetons stand out from the flat plains around them. This was my Mother's favorite park. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
Travel the United States
I went to the Smoky Mountains in 1989 and will never forget the experience. We rode horseback all through those hills and it was just gorgeous! Lake Powell, Arizona
Travel the Southwest
Lake Powell is formed by the same Colorado River that formed the Grand Canyon...it is just upstream. It is man made by the damming of the river in Glen Canyon and is really fantastic to explore by boat. You can go by speedboat and take in the rocks, or you can rent a houseboat and leisurely explore. When we were there we hiked up a trail that led to the rainbow bridge which is a natural arch rock formation. It was a perfect day! Niagara Falls, New York and Canada
Travel the United States
My husband and I went here for our honeymoon and it was spectacular! We also toured the finger lakes and went over to Connecticut after stopping by West Point and driving around the Hudson River Valley. It was in the fall and all the leaves were changing...just beautiful. Olympic National Park, Washington
Travel the United States
East of Seattle is a gorgeous emerald green forest that is drenched in rain so often that it smells musty, but the sights are incredible. Sedona, Arizona
Sedona is south of Flagstaff and sits in a canyon called Oak Creek. Spectacular red rock formations, beautiful creeks, gorgeous trees... it is a wonderland.
Sequoia National Park, California
Travel the United States
When I was a little girl my grandfather made me a box from wood he found in Sequoia Park and I waited a long time to go see those trees. The largest by volume in the entire world, they are also among the oldest trees on the planet, some of them being over 2000 years old! Pictures don't really show their enormity. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana
Yellowstone is indescribable! It is a huge park, and it is now known that it actually sits on the top of an old dormant volcano, the caldera of it. Someday it might erupt and destroy the park, so if you want to see it, don't delay.
Yosemite National Park, California
Travel the United States
Yosemite is stunning! Some people like it better than the Grand Canyon. It has so many different things to see: waterfalls, huge sequoia trees like in Sequoia Park, gorgeous meadows, huge rocks, and lots of wildlife. It is one of my favorite places.Located only 4 and a half hours from Los Angeles, it is well worth the drive if you are ever going to lay over at Los Angeles airport. Take 2 days and explore this magical place. You will never regret it.
Zion National Park, Utah
Travel the Southwest
The great thing about Zion is that you get to drive around the bottom and look up at those gorgeous mountains. So beautiful! It's not far from Bryce Canyon so don't miss it! Our Galaxy
No lens about natural wonder would be complete without a reference to the beautiful night sky! Enjoy these photos taken by NASA and the Hubble Telescope.
Aurora Borealis
Another Natural Wonder
The poles of our planet have atmospheric conditions that produce these spectacular skyscapes. While I have not gotten to see them yet, I hope to someday! Other Great Nature Lenses

My Favorite Natural Wonder is the Whole State of Hawaii
Hawaii has it all: gorgeous sunsets, emerald forests, bamboo forests, snow, volcanoes, tropical weather, dry weather, snow, wind, green valleys, waterfalls,
mountains, and guess what? No snakes! I have been lucky enough to go to every island, some many times, and it may be where I retire some day. Walking around in that fresh air smelling the Plumeria just lifts my spirits!
It's also a botanical wonderland. More than half of the plants that grow there grow nowhere else on earth!
All the Islands are spectacular. Pack your Bags and be ready for Paradise!
